Sirach 30

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 Whoever loves his son will beat him frequently so that in after years the son may be his comfort.	1 Chi ama il proprio figlio usa spesso la frusta per lui, per gioire di lui alla fine.
2 Whoever is strict with his son wil reap the benefit, and be able to boast of him to his acquaintances.	2 Chi corregge il proprio figlio ne trarrà vantaggio e se ne potrà vantare con i suoi conoscenti.
3 Whoever educates his son wil be the envy of his enemy, and wil be proud of him among his friends.	3 Chi istruisce il proprio figlio rende geloso il nemico e davanti agli amici si rallegra.
4 Even when the father dies, he might wel not be dead, since he leaves his likeness behind him.	4 Muore il padre? È come se non morisse, perché dopo di sé lascia uno che gli è simile.
5 In life he has had the joy of his company, dying, he has no anxieties.	5 Durante la vita egli gioisce nel contemplarlo, in punto di morte non prova dolore.
6 He leaves an avenger against his enemies and a rewarder of favours for his friends.	6 Per i nemici lascia un vendicatore, per gli amici uno che sa ricompensarli.
7 Whoever coddles his son will bandage his wounds, his heart wil turn over at every cry.	7 Chi accarezza un figlio ne fascerà poi le ferite, a ogni grido il suo cuore sarà sconvolto.
8 A badly broken-in horse turns out stubborn, a son left to himself turns out headstrong.	8 Un cavallo non domato diventa caparbio, un figlio lasciato a se stesso diventa testardo.
9 Pamper your child and he wil terrorise you, play along with him and he wil bring you sorrow.	9 Vezzeggia il figlio ed egli ti riserverà delle sorprese, scherza con lui, ti procurerà dispiaceri.
10 Do not laugh with him, or one day you wil weep with him and end up gnashing your teeth.	10 Non ridere con lui per non doverti rattristare, e non debba alla fine digrignare i denti.
11 While he is young, do not al ow him his freedom and do not wink at his mistakes.	11 Non concedergli libertà in gioventù, non prendere alla leggera i suoi errori.
12 Bend his neck in youth, bruise his ribs while he is a child, or else he wil grow stubborn anddisobedient, and hurt you very deeply.	12 Piegagli il collo quando è giovane, e battigli i fianchi finché è fanciullo, perché poi intestardito non ti disobbedisca e tu ne abbia un profondo dolore.
13 Be strict with your son, and persevere with him, or you will rue his insolence.	13 Educa tuo figlio e prenditi cura di lui, così non dovrai sopportare la sua insolenza.
14 Better be poor if healthy and fit than rich if tormented in body.	14 Meglio un povero di aspetto sano e forte che un ricco malato nel suo corpo.
15 Health and strength are better than any gold, a robust body than untold wealth.	15 Salute e vigore valgono più di tutto l’oro, un corpo robusto più di un’immensa fortuna.
16 No riches can outweigh bodily health, no enjoyment surpass a cheerful heart.	16 Non c’è ricchezza superiore alla salute del corpo e non c’è felicità più grande della gioia del cuore.
17 Better death than a wretched life, and everlasting rest than chronic il ness.	17 Meglio la morte che una vita amara, il riposo eterno che una malattia cronica.
18 Good things lavished on a closed mouth are like food offerings put on a grave.	18 Cose buone versate su una bocca chiusa sono come cibi deposti sopra una tomba.
19 What use is an offering to an idol which can neither eat nor smel ? How describe someone pursued bythe Lord's displeasure?	19 A che serve all’idolo l’offerta di frutti? Esso non mangia né sente il profumo; così è per colui che il Signore perséguita.
20 He looks and sighs like a eunuch embracing a pretty girl -- how he sighs!	20 Egli guarda con gli occhi e geme, come un eunuco che abbraccia una vergine e geme: così è per colui che fa giustizia con violenza.
21 Do not abandon yourself to sorrow, do not torment yourself with brooding.	21 Non darti in balìa della tristezza e non tormentarti con i tuoi pensieri.
22 Gladness of heart is life to anyone, joy is what gives length of days.	22 La gioia del cuore è la vita dell’uomo, l’allegria dell’uomo è lunga vita.
23 Give your cares the slip, console your heart, chase sorrow far away; for sorrow has been the ruin ofmany, and is no use to anybody.	23 Distraiti e consola il tuo cuore, tieni lontana la profonda tristezza, perché la tristezza ha rovinato molti e in essa non c’è alcun vantaggio.
24 Jealousy and anger shorten your days, and worry brings premature old age.	24 Gelosia e ira accorciano i giorni, le preoccupazioni anticipano la vecchiaia.
25 A genial heart makes a good trencherman, someone who enjoys a good meal.	25 Un cuore limpido e sereno si accontenta dei cibi e gusta tutto quello che mangia.
