Sirach 16

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Do not long for a brood of worthless children, and do not take pleasure in godless sons.	1 Non desiderare molti figli, se inutili, e non rallegrarti dei figli che sono empi.
2 However many you have, take no pleasure in them, unless the fear of the Lord lives among them.	2 Quando sono molti, non esserne contento, se non c'è con loro il timore del Signore.
3 Do not count on their having long life, do not put too much faith in their number; for better have onethan a thousand, better die childless than have children who are godless.	3 Non contare nella loro giovane età, e non confidare nel loro numero, perché vale più di mille un solo figlio, il morire senza prole che con figli empi.
4 One person of sense can populate a city, but a race of lawless people will be destroyed.	4 Uno solo, da saggio, edifica la città, ma un'intera tribù d'insensati sarà distrutta.
5 My eyes have seen many such things, my ears have heard things even more impressive.	5 Il mio occhio ha visto molte di tali cose, e cose ancor più forti ha udito il mio orecchio.
6 Fire is kindled in a sinful society, Retribution blazes in a rebel ious nation.	6 Nelle adunanze dei peccatori s'accende il fuoco e nel popolo ribelle s'accese la collera.
7 God did not pardon the giants of old who, confident in their strength, had rebel ed.	7 Egli non perdonò gli antichi giganti, che si ribellarono con la loro forza.
8 He did not spare the people with whom Lot lived; he abhorred them, rather, for their pride.	8 Non risparmiò la nuova patria di Lot, li prese in abominio per la loro arroganza.
9 He was pitiless to the nation of perdition -- those people who gloried in their sins-	9 Non ebbe pietà di un popolo perduto, che fu scacciato per i suoi peccati,
10 as also to the six hundred thousand men on the march, who had banded together in their obstinacy.	10 né dei seicentomila uomini, tutti in congiura perché duri di cuore.
11 And had there been only one man stubborn, it would have been amazing had he escaped unpunished,since mercy and wrath alike belong to the Lord who is mighty to forgive and to pour out wrath.	11 Se anche ci fosse uno solo di dura cervice, farebbe meraviglia se fosse perdonato;
12 As great as his mercy, so is his severity; he judges each person as his deeds deserve:	12 perché in lui c'è misericordia e ira, egli è potente quando perdona e quando riversa l'ira.
13 the sinner wil not escape with his il -gotten gains nor the patience of the devout go for nothing.	13 E' grande nella misericordia e tremendo nel castigo, giudica l'uomo secondo le sue opere.
14 He takes note of every charitable action, and everyone is treated as he deserves.	14 Il peccatore non sfuggirà col bottino, né resterà delusa la pazienza del pio.
15	15 Riconoscerà ogni atto di misericordia, ciascuno riceverà secondo le sue opere.
16	16 Non dire: "Mi nasconderò dal Signore, lassù chi si ricorderà di me?
17 Do not say, 'I shal hide from the Lord; who is going to remember me up there? I shall not be noticedamong so many people; what am I in the immensity of creation?'	17 Fra tanta gente non sarò riconosciuto, che valgo io nell'immensa creazione?".
18 For see, the sky and the heavens above the sky, the abyss and the earth shake at his visitation.	18 Ecco, il cielo e il cielo del cielo, l'abisso e la terra tremano al suo apparire.
19 The mountains and earth's foundations alike quail and tremble when he looks at them.	19 Anche i monti e le fondamenta della terra tremano di spavento quando egli li guarda.
20 But to all this no one gives thought. Who keeps his movements in mind?	20 Non rifletterà il cuore su queste cose, non mediterà sulle sue vie?
21 The storm wind itself is invisible, and most of what he does goes undetected.	21 Come un uragano che l'uomo non vede, così molte sue opere sono nascoste.
22 'Who wil report whether justice has been done? Who wil be watching? The covenant is remote!'	22 Chi narrerà le opere della sua giustizia, o chi le aspetterà, se l'alleanza ancora non si compie?
23 Such are the thoughts of the person of little sense, stupid, misguided, cherishing his fol y.	23 L'uomo dal cuore piccolo pensa così, l'insensato vaneggia nelle pazzie del suo cuore.
24 Listen to me, my child, and learn knowledge, and give your whole mind to my words.	24 Ascolta, o figlio, impara a comprendere, applica il tuo cuore alle mie parole.
25 I shal expound discipline methodically and proclaim knowledge with precision.	25 Rivelerò con precisione l'istruzione, con esattezza annunzierò la scienza.
26 When God created his works in the beginning, he assigned them their places as soon as they weremade.	26 Quando il Signore creò le sue opere all'inizio, dopo averle fatte, dispose i loro confini.
27 He determined his works for al time, from their origins to their distant generations. They know neitherhunger nor weariness, and they never desert their duties.	27 Ordinò le sue opere per sempre, stabilì il loro dominio per le varie epoche; non hanno fame né si stancano, non cessano di compiere il loro lavoro.
28 Not one has ever got in the way of another, and they wil never disobey his word.	28 Ciascuna non urta quella che è vicina, non si ribellano mai alla sua parola.
29 And afterwards the Lord looked at the earth, and filled it with his good things.	29 Il Signore inoltre ha guardato la terra, e l'ha riempita con i suoi beni.
30 He covered its surface with every kind of animal, and to it they wil return.	30 Ricoprì la sua faccia di ogni vivente, che ad essa farà il suo ritorno.
