Sirach 16

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 Do not long for a brood of worthless children, and do not take pleasure in godless sons.	1 Non ti rallegrare di aver molti figliuoli, se ei sono cattivi, e non compiacertene, se in essi non è il timor di Dio.
2 However many you have, take no pleasure in them, unless the fear of the Lord lives among them.	2 Non tener per sicuro, ch'ei vivano, e non fare assegnamento sulle loro fatiche;
3 Do not count on their having long life, do not put too much faith in their number; for better have onethan a thousand, better die childless than have children who are godless.	3 Perocché è meglio avere un solo figliuolo timorato di Dio, che mille cattivi.
4 One person of sense can populate a city, but a race of lawless people will be destroyed.	4 E mette più conto il morire senza figliuoli, che lasciarne dei cattivi.
5 My eyes have seen many such things, my ears have heard things even more impressive.	5 Un sol uomo sensato farà, che sia popolata la patria: la nazione degli empj sarà sterminata.
6 Fire is kindled in a sinful society, Retribution blazes in a rebel ious nation.	6 Molte di tali cose hanno vedute gli occhi miei, e maggiori di queste ne hanno udite le mie orecchie.
7 God did not pardon the giants of old who, confident in their strength, had rebel ed.	7 Divamperà la fiamma in mezzo alle adunanze de' peccatori, e scoppierà l'ira sopra la nazion degli increduli.
8 He did not spare the people with whom Lot lived; he abhorred them, rather, for their pride.	8 Implacabile fu Iddio ai peccati degli antichi giganti, i quali per la presunzione delle loro forze furono annientati.
9 He was pitiless to the nation of perdition -- those people who gloried in their sins-	9 Ed egli non la perdonò all'ospizio di Lot, ed ebbe in esecrazione coloro a motivo delle superbe loro parole.
10 as also to the six hundred thousand men on the march, who had banded together in their obstinacy.	10 Non ebbe compassione di loro, e distrasse tutta quella nazione superba del suo mal fare.
11 And had there been only one man stubborn, it would have been amazing had he escaped unpunished,since mercy and wrath alike belong to the Lord who is mighty to forgive and to pour out wrath.	11 E lo stesso fu di secento mila uomini uniti nell'ostinazione del cuore. Onde se un solo fosse contumace sarebbe cosa mirabile, s'ei restasse impunito.
12 As great as his mercy, so is his severity; he judges each person as his deeds deserve:	12 Perocché la misericordia, e l'ira stanno con lui, e può placarsi, e può versare il suo sdegno:
13 the sinner wil not escape with his il -gotten gains nor the patience of the devout go for nothing.	13 Come egli e misericordioso, così ancora punisce: egli giudica l'uomo secondo le opere sue.
14 He takes note of every charitable action, and everyone is treated as he deserves.	14 Non fuggirà il peccatore col suo ladroneccio, e non sarà ritardata all'uom misericordioso la sua espettazione.
15	15 La piena misericordia preparerà il luogo a ciascbeduno secondo il merito delle opere sue, e secondo la saggezza praticata nel suo pellegrinaggio.
16	16 Non dire: Io mi celerò a Dio, e chi di colassù si metterà in pensiero di me?
17 Do not say, 'I shal hide from the Lord; who is going to remember me up there? I shall not be noticedamong so many people; what am I in the immensity of creation?'	17 Nissun mi riconoscerà in sì gran turba: imperocché, che è ella l'anima mia in tale immensità di creature?
18 For see, the sky and the heavens above the sky, the abyss and the earth shake at his visitation.	18 Ecco, che il cielo, e gli altissimi fieli, e il mar profondo, e la terra tutta, e quanto in essi condensi, a un'occhiata di lui tremeranno.
19 The mountains and earth's foundations alike quail and tremble when he looks at them.	19 I monti insieme, ed i colli, e i fondamenti della terra, allorché Iddio li rimira, pel terrore si scuotono.
20 But to all this no one gives thought. Who keeps his movements in mind?	20 E tutte queste cose non v'ha cuor, che le penetri; ma tutti i cuori son veduti da lui:
21 The storm wind itself is invisible, and most of what he does goes undetected.	21 E le vie di lui, e la procella, che non sarà stata da umano occhio veduta, chi è, che l'intenda?
22 'Who wil report whether justice has been done? Who wil be watching? The covenant is remote!'	22 Perocché moltissime opere di lui sono occulte: ma le opere di sua giustizia chi può spiegarle? ovver chi potrà sostenerle? perocché i decreti (di Dio) son molto rimoti dall'idee di certuni; ma tutto sarà disaminato nel fine.
23 Such are the thoughts of the person of little sense, stupid, misguided, cherishing his fol y.	23 L'uomo privo di cuore pensa alle inutilità, e l'imprudente, che è fuori di strada, pensa a cose da stolto.
24 Listen to me, my child, and learn knowledge, and give your whole mind to my words.	24 Figliuol mio ascoltami, e appara gli insegnamenti della prudenza, e fa attenzione in cuor tuo a' detti miei,
25 I shal expound discipline methodically and proclaim knowledge with precision.	25 Ed io ti esporrò documenti ben ponderati, e ti svelerò l'astrusa saggezza: e fa attenzione in cuor tuo a' detti miei, ed io con retto spirito ti dirò le meraviglie, che Dio sparse nelle opere sue da principio, e la scienza di lui li annunzio secondo la verità.
26 When God created his works in the beginning, he assigned them their places as soon as they weremade.	26 Con saggezza formò Dio da principio le opere sue, e fin dalla lor creazione distinse le loro parti, e le principali di esse secondo le specie loro.
27 He determined his works for al time, from their origins to their distant generations. They know neitherhunger nor weariness, and they never desert their duties.	27 Diede alle operazioni loro virtù eterna: non hanno avuto bisogno di ristoro, e non si sono stancate, e non hanno cessato di agire giammai.
28 Not one has ever got in the way of another, and they wil never disobey his word.	28 L'una non darà impaccio all'altra giammai.
29 And afterwards the Lord looked at the earth, and filled it with his good things.	29 Non esser tu disubbidiente alle parola di lui.
30 He covered its surface with every kind of animal, and to it they wil return.	30 Dopo di questo Iddio mirò la terra, e di beni la ricolmò.
	31 Ciò dimostrano tutti gli animali viventi, che sono sulla superficie di essa, e nella terra stessa ritornano.
