NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
1 Do not long for a brood of worthless children, and do not take pleasure in godless sons.1 Ne iucunderis in filiis impiis; si multiplicentur, non oblecteris superipsos,
si non est timor Dei cum illis.
2 However many you have, take no pleasure in them, unless the fear of the Lord lives among them.2 Non credas vitae illorum
et ne respexeris in labores eorum.
3 Do not count on their having long life, do not put too much faith in their number; for better have onethan a thousand, better die childless than have children who are godless.3 Melior est enim unus timens Deum
quam mille filii impii;
4 One person of sense can populate a city, but a race of lawless people will be destroyed.4 et potius est mori sine filiis
quam relinquere filios impios.
5 My eyes have seen many such things, my ears have heard things even more impressive.5 Ab uno sensato inhabitabitur patria,
tribus autem impiorum deseretur.
6 Fire is kindled in a sinful society, Retribution blazes in a rebel ious nation.6 Multa talia vidit oculus meus,
et fortiora horum audivit auris mea.
7 God did not pardon the giants of old who, confident in their strength, had rebel ed.7 In synagoga peccantium exardebit ignis,
et in gente incredibili exardescet ira.
8 He did not spare the people with whom Lot lived; he abhorred them, rather, for their pride.8 Non exoraverunt eum antiqui gigantes,
qui rebelles fuerunt confidentes suae virtuti.
9 He was pitiless to the nation of perdition -- those people who gloried in their sins-9 Et non pepercit accolis Lot
et exsecratus est eos prae superbia verbi illorum;
10 as also to the six hundred thousand men on the march, who had banded together in their obstinacy.10 non misertus est gentis anathematis,
qui depulsi sunt in peccatis suis.
11 And had there been only one man stubborn, it would have been amazing had he escaped unpunished,since mercy and wrath alike belong to the Lord who is mighty to forgive and to pour out wrath.11 Et sicut sescenta milia peditum,
qui congregati sunt in duritia cordis sui;
et, si unus fuisset cervicatus,
mirum si fuisset immunis:
12 As great as his mercy, so is his severity; he judges each person as his deeds deserve:12 misericordia enim et ira est cum illo,
sustinens, exorabilis et effundens iram.
13 the sinner wil not escape with his il -gotten gains nor the patience of the devout go for nothing.13 ecundum multam misericordiam suam, sic et correptio illius:
hominem secundum opera sua iudicat.
14 He takes note of every charitable action, and everyone is treated as he deserves.14 Non effugiet in rapina peccator,
et non irrita erit sustinentia iusti.
15 15 Omni misericordiae erit merces:
unusquisque secundum meritum operum suorum inveniet coram se
et secundum intellectum peregrinationis ipsius.
Dominus induravit cor pharaonis, ne agnosceret illum,
ut opera sua innotescerent sub caelo.
Misericordia eius apparuit omnibus creaturis eius,
lucem suam et tenebras dispertiit filiis hominum.
16 16 Non dicas: “ A Deo abscondar!
Et, ex summo quis mei memorabitur?
17 Do not say, 'I shal hide from the Lord; who is going to remember me up there? I shall not be noticedamong so many people; what am I in the immensity of creation?'17 In populo magno non agnoscar;
quae est enim anima mea in tam immensa creatura? ”.
18 For see, the sky and the heavens above the sky, the abyss and the earth shake at his visitation.18 Ecce caelum et caeli caelorum,
abyssus et universa terra et quae in eis sunt,
in visitatione illius commovebuntur;
19 The mountains and earth's foundations alike quail and tremble when he looks at them.19 montes simul et colles et fundamenta terrae,
cum conspexerit illa Deus, tremore concutientur.
20 But to all this no one gives thought. Who keeps his movements in mind?20 Et in omnibus his non apponet cor,
etenim omne cor intellegitur ab illo.
21 The storm wind itself is invisible, and most of what he does goes undetected.21 Et vias illius quis intellegit
et procellam, quam nec oculus videbit hominis?
22 'Who wil report whether justice has been done? Who wil be watching? The covenant is remote!'22 Nam plurima illius opera sunt in absconsis,
et opera iustitiae eius quis enuntiabit, aut quis sustinebit?
Longe enim est decretum,
et interrogatio omnium in consummatione est.
23 Such are the thoughts of the person of little sense, stupid, misguided, cherishing his fol y.23 Qui minoratur corde, cogitat ista,
et vir imprudens et errans cogitat stulta.
24 Listen to me, my child, and learn knowledge, and give your whole mind to my words.24 Audi me, fili, et disce prudentiam sensus,
25 I shal expound discipline methodically and proclaim knowledge with precision.25 et dicam in aequitate disciplinam
et scrutabor enarrare sapientiam;
et in verbis meis attende in corde tuo.
Edico in aequitate spiritus virtutes,
quas posuit Deus in opera sua ab initio,
et in veritate enuntio scientiam eius.
26 When God created his works in the beginning, he assigned them their places as soon as they weremade.26 Quando creavit Deus opera sua ab initio
et ab institutione ipsorum distinxit partes illorum,
27 He determined his works for al time, from their origins to their distant generations. They know neitherhunger nor weariness, and they never desert their duties.27 ornavit in aeternum opera illorum
et dominatum eorum in generationibus suis.
Nec esurierunt nec laboraverunt
et non destiterunt ab operibus suis.
28 Not one has ever got in the way of another, and they wil never disobey his word.28 Unusquisque proximum sibi non angustiavit,
29 And afterwards the Lord looked at the earth, and filled it with his good things.29 et usque in aeternum non erunt incredibiles verbo illius.
30 He covered its surface with every kind of animal, and to it they wil return.30 Post haec Deus in terram respexit
et complevit illam bonis suis;
31 anima omnis vitalis cooperuit faciem ipsius,
et in ipsam iterum reversio illorum.
