Sirach 16

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Do not long for a brood of worthless children, and do not take pleasure in godless sons.	1 - Non ti rallegrare di figliuoli empi, se si moltiplicano, e non t'allietar di lor, se il timor di Dio non è in essi.
2 However many you have, take no pleasure in them, unless the fear of the Lord lives among them.	2 Non confidar nella loro vita, e non fare assegnamento sulle loro fatiche.
3 Do not count on their having long life, do not put too much faith in their number; for better have onethan a thousand, better die childless than have children who are godless.	3 È meglio invero un sol figliuolo timorato di Dio che mille empi,
4 One person of sense can populate a city, but a race of lawless people will be destroyed.	4 e [più] vantaggioso morir senza figli, che lasciarne degli empi.
5 My eyes have seen many such things, my ears have heard things even more impressive.	5 Un saggio basterà a popolare un paese; la tribù [invece] degli empi sarà sterminata.
6 Fire is kindled in a sinful society, Retribution blazes in a rebel ious nation.	6 Molte di tali cose io vidi co' miei occhi, e cose ancor più gravi udì il mio orecchio.
7 God did not pardon the giants of old who, confident in their strength, had rebel ed.	7 In una riunione di peccatori avvampò il fuoco, e contro una razza ribelle divampò l'ira.
8 He did not spare the people with whom Lot lived; he abhorred them, rather, for their pride.	8 Non impetraron [perdono] per i propri peccati gli antichi giganti, che, fidando nella propria forza, s'eran ribellati.
9 He was pitiless to the nation of perdition -- those people who gloried in their sins-	9 E non perdonò [Iddio] agli ospiti di Lot, e gli abominò per l'insolenza delle loro parole.
10 as also to the six hundred thousand men on the march, who had banded together in their obstinacy.	10 Non ebbe pietà di loro e sterminò tutto il popolo, che imbaldanziva ne' suoi peccati.
11 And had there been only one man stubborn, it would have been amazing had he escaped unpunished,since mercy and wrath alike belong to the Lord who is mighty to forgive and to pour out wrath.	11 E cosi [fu dei] seicentomila uomini a piedi, che s'eran collegati nella durezza del loro cuore. Or se un solo fosse testardo [e ribelle], sarebbe meraviglia che quel solo rimanesse impunito!
12 As great as his mercy, so is his severity; he judges each person as his deeds deserve:	12 La misericordia e lo sdegno sono in lui: è potente nel perdono ed effonde l'ira.
13 the sinner wil not escape with his il -gotten gains nor the patience of the devout go for nothing.	13 Com'è [immensa] la sua misericordia, cosi il suo castigo: giudica l'uomo secondo le sue opere.
14 He takes note of every charitable action, and everyone is treated as he deserves.	14 Non sfuggirà con le [sue] rapine il peccatore, e non sarà ritardata l'aspettazione di chi usa misericordia.
15	15 Ogni misericordia darà posto a ciuscuno, secondo il merito delle sue opere, e secondo la saggezza del suo pellegrinaggio.
16	16 Non dire: «Mi nasconderò a Dio, e di lassù chi si ricorderà di me?
17 Do not say, 'I shal hide from the Lord; who is going to remember me up there? I shall not be noticedamong so many people; what am I in the immensity of creation?'	17 Nella gran turba non sarò riconosciuto: che cos'è Infatti l'anima mia nell'immensità del creato? ».
18 For see, the sky and the heavens above the sky, the abyss and the earth shake at his visitation.	18 Ecco! il cielo e i cieli de' cieli, l'oceano e la terra tutta e quant'è in essi traballano ad uno sguardo di lui.
19 The mountains and earth's foundations alike quail and tremble when he looks at them.	19 I monti, insieme, e i colli e le fondamenta della terra son scossi da tremore, quando Dio il guarda.
20 But to all this no one gives thought. Who keeps his movements in mind?	20 E su tutte queste cose non riflette il cuore degli [uomini], ma ogni cuore è conosciuto do Lui!
21 The storm wind itself is invisible, and most of what he does goes undetected.	21 e le vie di lui chi le indaga? Sfugge la procella all'occhio dell'uomo,
22 'Who wil report whether justice has been done? Who wil be watching? The covenant is remote!'	22 e la più parte delle opere di lui rimnngon nascoste. «I fatti della sua giustizia chi può annunziarli? o chi aspettarli? » Chè lungi da[l pensiero di] parecchi è il patto [divino], e l'esame di tutti s'ha alla flne de' secoli.
23 Such are the thoughts of the person of little sense, stupid, misguided, cherishing his fol y.	23 Chi è scemo di cuore pensa vanità [siffatte], e l'uomo insensato e illuso pensa stoltezze.
24 Listen to me, my child, and learn knowledge, and give your whole mind to my words.	24 Ascoltami, o figliuolo, e impara le dottrine del sapere, e sta' attento in cuor tuo alle mie parole.
25 I shal expound discipline methodically and proclaim knowledge with precision.	25 E ti manifesterò ben ponderata dottrina; scruterò la sapienza per esporla, e tu sta' attento in cuor tuo alle mie parole: e con rettitudine di spirito dirò le meraviglie, che Dio fln da principio ha sparso nelle opere sue, e annunzierò con esattezza la scienza di lui.
26 When God created his works in the beginning, he assigned them their places as soon as they weremade.	26 Per decreto di Dio [sussistono] le sue opere fln da principio, e fln dalla creazione loro ne separò le parli. I loro domini! [stabilì] per [tutte] le generazioni,
27 He determined his works for al time, from their origins to their distant generations. They know neitherhunger nor weariness, and they never desert their duties.	27 e ne regolò le operazioni in perpetuo. Non han fame nè si stancano, e non cessan dal loro operare.
28 Not one has ever got in the way of another, and they wil never disobey his word.	28 Nessuno dà impaccio al suo vicino: giammai
29 And afterwards the Lord looked at the earth, and filled it with his good things.	29 non si ribellano alla sua parola.
30 He covered its surface with every kind of animal, and to it they wil return.	30 Dopo ciò il Signore volse lo sguardo alla terra, e la riempì de' suoi beni.
	31 Ogni sorta d'animali viventi ricoprì la sua faccia, e nel suo seno fanno essi ritorno.
