NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
1 CHORUS: Where did your lover go, O loveliest of women? Which way did your lover turn so that we canhelp you seek him?1 Quo abiit dilectus tuus,
o pulcherrima mulierum?
Quo declinavit dilectus tuus,
et quaeremus eum tecum?
2 BELOVED: My love went down to his garden, to the beds of spices, to pasture his flock on the grass andgather lilies.2 Dilectus meus descendit in hortum suum
ad areolam aromatum,
ut pascatur in hortis
et lilia colligat.
3 I belong to my love, and my love to me. He pastures his flock among the lilies.3 Ego dilecto meo, et dilectus meus mihi,
qui pascitur inter lilia.
4 LOVER: You are fair as Tirzah, my beloved, enchanting as Jerusalem, formidable as an army!4 Pulchra es, amica mea, sicut Thersa,
decora sicut Ierusalem,
terribilis ut castrorum acies ordinata.
5 Turn your eyes away from me, they take me by assault! Your hair is like a flock of goats surging downthe slopes of Gilead.5 Averte oculos tuos a me,
quia ipsi me conturbant.
Capilli tui sicut grex caprarum,
quae descenderunt de Galaad.
6 Your teeth are like a flock of ewes as they come up from being washed. Each one has its twin, not oneunpaired with another.6 Dentes tui sicut grex ovium,
quae ascenderunt de lavacro:
omnes gemellis fetibus,
et sterilis non est in eis.
7 Your cheeks, behind your veil, are halves of pomegranate.7 Sicut fragmen mali punici, sic genae tuae
per velamen tuum.
8 There are sixty queens and eighty concubines (and countless girls).8 Sexaginta sunt reginae,
et octoginta concubinae,
et adulescentularum non est numerus;
9 My dove is my only one, perfect and mine. She is the darling of her mother, the favourite of the one whobore her. Girls have seen her and proclaimed her blessed, queens and concubines have sung her praises,9 una est columba mea, perfecta mea,
una est matri suae,
electa genetrici suae.
Viderunt eam filiae et beatissimam praedicaverunt;
reginae et concubinae, et laudaverunt eam:
10 'Who is this arising like the dawn, fair as the moon, resplendent as the sun, formidable as an army?'10 “ Quae est ista, quae progreditur quasi aurora consurgens,
pulchra ut luna,
electa ut sol,
terribilis ut castrorum acies ordinata? ”.
11 I went down to the nut orchard to see the fresh shoots in the val ey, to see if the vines were buddingand the pomegranate trees in flower.11 Descendi in hortum nucum,
ut viderem poma convallium
et inspicerem, si floruisset vinea,
et germinassent mala punica.
12 Before I knew . . . my desire had hurled me onto the chariots of Amminadib!12 Non advertit animus meus,
cum posuit me in quadrigas principis populi mei.
