New Jerusalem Bible La Biblia
Remember your Creator while you are still young, before the bad days come, before the years comewhich, you wil say, give you no pleasure;1 Acuérdate de tu Creador en tus años mozos, antes de que lleguen los días aciagos y te alcancen los años en que digas: «No les saco gusto»;
before the sun and the light grow dim and the moon and stars, before the clouds return after the rain;2 antes de que se oscurezcan el sol, la luz, la luna y las estrellas, y tras la lluvia vuelva el nublado.
the time when your watchmen become shaky, when strong men are bent double, when the women,one by one, quit grinding, and, as they look out of the window, find their sight growing dim.3 Ese día temblarán los guardianes de la casa, y los valientes se encorvarán; las que muelen serán pocas y se pararán; los que miran por las ventanas se ofuscarán;
When the street-door is kept shut, when the sound of grinding fades away, when the first cry of a birdwakes you up, when all the singing has stopped;4 las puertas de la calle se cerrarán y el ruido del molino será solo un eco; se debilitará el canto de los pájaros, las canciones se irán apagando;
when going uphil is an ordeal and you are frightened at every step you take- yet the almond tree is inflower and the grasshopper is weighed down and the caper-bush loses its tang; while you are on the way to youreverlasting home and the mourners are assembling in the street;5 darán miedo las alturas y en las calles rondarán los terrores; cuando florezca el almendro y se arrastre la langosta y sea ineficaz la alcaparra; porque el hombre va a la morada de su eternidad y el cortejo fúnebre recorre las calles.
before the silver thread snaps, or the golden bowl is cracked, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,or the pul ey broken at the wel -head:6 Antes de que se rompa el hilo de plata y se destroce la copa de oro, y se quiebre el cántaro en la fuente y se raje la polea del pozo,
the dust returns to the earth from which it came, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.7 y el polvo vuelva a la tierra que fue, y el espíritu vuelva al Dios que lo dio.
Sheer futility, Qoheleth says, everything is futile.8 Vanidad de vanidades, dice Qohélet, vanidad de vanidades, todo es vanidad.
Besides being a sage, Qoheleth taught the people what he himself knew, having weighed, studied andemended many proverbs.9 Qohélet, además de ser un sabio, enseñó al pueblo lo que él sabía. Estudió, inventó y formuló muchos proverbios.
Qoheleth took pains to write in an attractive style and by it to convey truths.10 Qohélet procuró un estilo atractivo y escribió la verdad con acierto.
The sayings of a sage are like goads, like pegs positioned by shepherds: the same shepherd finds ause for both.11 Las sentencias de los sabios son como aguijadas, o como clavos bien clavados sus colecciones de textos: todos pronunciados por un solo pastor.
Furthermore, my child, you must realise that writing books involves endless hard work, and that muchstudy wearies the body.12 Un último aviso, hijo mío: nunca se acaba de escribir más y más libros, y el mucho estudiar desgasta el cuerpo.
To sum up the whole matter: fear God and keep his commandments, for that is the duty of everyone.13 En conclusión, y después de oírlo todo, teme a Dios y guarda sus mandamientos, porque eso es ser hombre.
For God wil cal al our deeds to judgement, all that is hidden, be it good or bad.14 Que Dios juzgará todas las acciones, aun las ocultas, sean buenas o malas.
