Ecclesiastes/Qohelet 12

1 Remember your Creator while you are still young, before the bad days come, before the years comewhich, you wil say, give you no pleasure;	1 - Ricordati del tuo creatorenel tempo di tua gioventù, prima che vengano i dì dell'afflizione, e s'avvicinino gli anni di cui dirai:«Non mi piacciono!»,
2 before the sun and the light grow dim and the moon and stars, before the clouds return after the rain;	2 prima che s'oscuri [per te] il sole e la luce e la luna e le stelle, e tornin le nubi dopo la pioggia;
3 the time when your watchmen become shaky, when strong men are bent double, when the women,one by one, quit grinding, and, as they look out of the window, find their sight growing dim.	3 quando tremeranno i custodi della casa, e tentenneranno gli uomini [già] robustissimi, e smetteranno le [donne] macinanti, ridotte a poche, e resteran nelle tenebre quelle che guardan per le finestre,
4 When the street-door is kept shut, when the sound of grinding fades away, when the first cry of a birdwakes you up, when all the singing has stopped;	4 e [si] chiuderanno i battenti sulla via, mentre s'abbassa il rumor della mola, e si leverà [l'uomo] alla voce d'un uccellino, e s'affievoliranno tutte le figlie del canto;
5 when going uphil is an ordeal and you are frightened at every step you take- yet the almond tree is inflower and the grasshopper is weighed down and the caper-bush loses its tang; while you are on the way to youreverlasting home and the mourners are assembling in the street;	5 [quando] s'avrà sgomento delle salite e si sarà paurosi per via, e fiorirà il mandorloe s'impinguerà la locusta, e perderà ogni forza il cappero;[quando cioè] l'uomo sta per andarsene alla casa della sua eternità, e s'aggireran per le vie i ploranti;
6 before the silver thread snaps, or the golden bowl is cracked, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,or the pul ey broken at the wel -head:	6 prima che la funicella d'argento si rompa, e l'aurea palla s'infranga, e vada in pezzi la brocca sulla fonte, e si rompa la carrucola del pozzo;
7 the dust returns to the earth from which it came, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.	7 e torni la polvere alla terra, donde venne, e lo spirito torni a Dio che lo donò.
8 Sheer futility, Qoheleth says, everything is futile.	8 Vanità delle vanità! - dice l' Ecclesiaste -Tutto è vanità!
9 Besides being a sage, Qoheleth taught the people what he himself knew, having weighed, studied andemended many proverbs.	9 Poichè fu un gran sapiente l'Ecclesiaste, insegnava al popolo [il sapere], e raccontò [le esperienze] che aveva fattoe investigando compose molte sentenze.
10 Qoheleth took pains to write in an attractive style and by it to convey truths.	10 Cercò di trovare utili [e piacevoli] detti, e scrisse parole piene di rettitudine e di verità.
11 The sayings of a sage are like goads, like pegs positioned by shepherds: the same shepherd finds ause for both.	11 Le parole de' sapienti son come pungolie come chiodi profondamente confitti: le quali, mediante il consiglio dei maestri, derivan da un solo pastore.
12 Furthermore, my child, you must realise that writing books involves endless hard work, and that muchstudy wearies the body.	12 Oltre a queste, o figliuolo, non cercare altro. A moltiplicare i libri non si finirebbe mai, e il troppo studio è travaglio del corpo.
13 To sum up the whole matter: fear God and keep his commandments, for that is the duty of everyone.	13 La fine di [tutto] il discorso ascoltiamola insieme:Temi Dio e osserva i suoi comandamenti, perchè tutto l'uomo sta qui!
14 For God wil cal al our deeds to judgement, all that is hidden, be it good or bad.	14 Ogni opera invero Dio sottoporrà al giudizio, per quanto nascosta, sia essa buona o cattiva.
