Ecclesiastes/Qohelet 12

1 Remember your Creator while you are still young, before the bad days come, before the years comewhich, you wil say, give you no pleasure;	1 Ricòrdati del tuo creatore nei giorni della tua giovinezza, prima che vengano i giorni tristi e giungano gli anni di cui dovrai dire: «Non ci provo alcun gusto»;
2 before the sun and the light grow dim and the moon and stars, before the clouds return after the rain;	2 prima che si oscurino il sole, la luce, la luna e le stelle e tornino ancora le nubi dopo la pioggia;
3 the time when your watchmen become shaky, when strong men are bent double, when the women,one by one, quit grinding, and, as they look out of the window, find their sight growing dim.	3 quando tremeranno i custodi della casa e si curveranno i gagliardi e cesseranno di lavorare le donne che macinano, perché rimaste poche, e si offuscheranno quelle che guardano dalle finestre
4 When the street-door is kept shut, when the sound of grinding fades away, when the first cry of a birdwakes you up, when all the singing has stopped;	4 e si chiuderanno i battenti sulla strada; quando si abbasserà il rumore della mola e si attenuerà il cinguettio degli uccelli e si affievoliranno tutti i toni del canto;
5 when going uphil is an ordeal and you are frightened at every step you take- yet the almond tree is inflower and the grasshopper is weighed down and the caper-bush loses its tang; while you are on the way to youreverlasting home and the mourners are assembling in the street;	5 quando si avrà paura delle alture e terrore si proverà nel cammino; quando fiorirà il mandorlo e la locusta si trascinerà a stento e il cappero non avrà più effetto, poiché l’uomo se ne va nella dimora eterna e i piagnoni si aggirano per la strada;
6 before the silver thread snaps, or the golden bowl is cracked, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,or the pul ey broken at the wel -head:	6 prima che si spezzi il filo d’argento e la lucerna d’oro s’infranga e si rompa l’anfora alla fonte e la carrucola cada nel pozzo,
7 the dust returns to the earth from which it came, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.	7 e ritorni la polvere alla terra, com’era prima, e il soffio vitale torni a Dio, che lo ha dato.
8 Sheer futility, Qoheleth says, everything is futile.	8 Vanità delle vanità, dice Qoèlet, tutto è vanità.
9 Besides being a sage, Qoheleth taught the people what he himself knew, having weighed, studied andemended many proverbs.	9 Oltre a essere saggio, Qoèlet insegnò al popolo la scienza; ascoltò, meditò e compose un gran numero di massime.
10 Qoheleth took pains to write in an attractive style and by it to convey truths.	10 Qoèlet cercò di trovare parole piacevoli e scrisse con onestà parole veritiere.
11 The sayings of a sage are like goads, like pegs positioned by shepherds: the same shepherd finds ause for both.	11 Le parole dei saggi sono come pungoli, e come chiodi piantati sono i detti delle collezioni: sono dati da un solo pastore.
12 Furthermore, my child, you must realise that writing books involves endless hard work, and that muchstudy wearies the body.	12 Ancora un avvertimento, figlio mio: non si finisce mai di scrivere libri e il molto studio affatica il corpo.
13 To sum up the whole matter: fear God and keep his commandments, for that is the duty of everyone.	13 Conclusione del discorso, dopo aver ascoltato tutto: temi Dio e osserva i suoi comandamenti, perché qui sta tutto l’uomo.
14 For God wil cal al our deeds to judgement, all that is hidden, be it good or bad.	14 Infatti, Dio citerà in giudizio ogni azione, anche tutto ciò che è occulto, bene o male.
