1 One dead fly can spoil the scent-maker's oil: a grain of stupidity outweighs wisdom and glory.	1 Le mosche che vi muoiono guastan la soavità dell'unguento. Val più della sapienza e della gloria una piccola stoltezza a tempo.
2 The sage's heart leads him aright, the fool's leads him astray.	2 Il cuore del sapiente va a destra, il cuore dello stolto va a sinistra.
3 A fool walks down the road, he has no wit -- and everyone remarks, 'How silly he is!'	3 Di più lo stolto, per qualunque via vada, essendo egli sciocco, crede che tutti gli altri siano sciocchi.
4 If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post; composure mitigates grave offences.	4 Se l'animo del sovrano si inalbera contro di te, non abbandonare il tuo posto, perchè la calma impedirà molti peccati.
5 One evil I observe under the sun: the sort of misjudgement to which rulers are prone-	5 C'è anche un altro male che ho veduto sotto il sole, e come per errore procede dal principe:
6 fol y promoted to the top and the rich taking the lowest place.	6 lo stolto collocato in altissima dignilà, e i nobili a sedere in basso.
7 I see slaves riding on horses and princes on foot like slaves.	7 Vidi gli schiavi a cavallo, e i principi camminare a piedi come schiavi.
8 He who digs a pit fal s into it, he who undermines a wal gets bitten by a snake,	8 Chi scava la fossa vi cascherà dentro e chi distrugge la siepe sarà morso dal serpente.
9 he who quarries stones gets hurt by them, he who chops wood takes a risk from it.	9 Chi smuove le pietre ne resterà offeso, e chi spacca le legna si farà del male.
10 If, for want of sharpening, the blade is blunt, you have to work twice as hard; but it is the outcome that makes wisdom rewarding.	10 Se il ferro è diventato ottuso e non è come prima, ma ha perso il taglio, si affila con molta fatica, così dall'industre lavoro verrà la sapienza.
11 If, for want of charming, the snake bites, the snake-charmer gets nothing out of it.	11 Se il serpente morde in silenzio, nulla ha meno del serpente l'occulto detrattore.
12 The sayings of a sage give pleasure, what a fool says procures his own ruin:	12 Le parole della bocca del sapiente (son piene di) grazia e le labbra dello stolto ne saranno la rovina.
13 his words have their origin in stupidity and their ending in treacherous fol y.	13 Il principio del suo parlare è la stoltezza, e la fine dei suoi discorsi è errore funestissimo.
14 A fool talks a great deal, but none of us in fact can tel the future; what wil happen after us, who cantel ?	14 Lo stolto moltiplica le parole. Non sa l'uomo ciò che è stato, e quello che sarà chi glielo potrà indicare?
15 A fool finds hard work very tiring, he cannot even find his own way into town.	15 Le fatiche degli stolti saran il loro tormento, essi non sanno la strada per andare alla città.
16 Woe to you, country with a lad for king, and where princes start feasting in the morning!	16 Guai a te, o terra, che hai per re un fanciullo, e principi che mangiano la mattina.
17 Happy the land whose king is nobly born, where princes eat at a respectable hour to keepthemselves strong and not merely to revel!	17 Beata la terra che ha un re nobile e principi che mangiano a loro tempo, per ristorarsi e non per gozzovigliare.
18 Thanks to idleness, the roof-tree gives way, thanks to carelessness, the house lets in the rain.	18 A causa delle pigrizie andrà giù il palco, e a causa dell'infingardaggine delle mani pioverà in casa.
19 We give parties to enjoy ourselves, wine makes us cheerful and money has an answer for everything.	19 Fan conviti per stare allegri, il vino per render gaia la vita, e tutto obbedisce al danaro.
20 Do not abuse the king, even in thought, do not abuse a rich man, even in your bedroom, for a bird ofthe air might carry the news, a winged messenger might repeat what you have said.	20 Non parlar male del re, nemmen col pensiero, non dir male del ricco, nemmeno nel segreto della tua camera, perchè gli uccelli dell'aria porteranno la tua, voce, e i volatili riferiranno i tuoi sentimenti.
