1 One dead fly can spoil the scent-maker's oil: a grain of stupidity outweighs wisdom and glory.	1 Una mosca morta guasta l’unguento del profumiere: un po’ di follia ha più peso della sapienza e dell’onore.
2 The sage's heart leads him aright, the fool's leads him astray.	2 Il cuore del sapiente va alla sua destra, il cuore dello stolto alla sua sinistra.
3 A fool walks down the road, he has no wit -- and everyone remarks, 'How silly he is!'	3 E anche quando lo stolto cammina per strada, il suo cuore è privo di senno e di ognuno dice: «Quello è un pazzo».
4 If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post; composure mitigates grave offences.	4 Se l’ira di un potente si accende contro di te, non lasciare il tuo posto, perché la calma pone rimedio a errori anche gravi.
5 One evil I observe under the sun: the sort of misjudgement to which rulers are prone-	5 C’è un male che io ho osservato sotto il sole, uno sbaglio commesso da un sovrano:
6 fol y promoted to the top and the rich taking the lowest place.	6 la stoltezza viene collocata in posti elevati e i ricchi siedono in basso.
7 I see slaves riding on horses and princes on foot like slaves.	7 Ho visto schiavi andare a cavallo e prìncipi camminare a piedi, per terra, come schiavi.
8 He who digs a pit fal s into it, he who undermines a wal gets bitten by a snake,	8 Chi scava una fossa vi può cadere dentro e chi abbatte un muro può essere morso da una serpe.
9 he who quarries stones gets hurt by them, he who chops wood takes a risk from it.	9 Chi spacca pietre può farsi male e chi taglia legna può correre pericoli.
10 If, for want of sharpening, the blade is blunt, you have to work twice as hard; but it is the outcome that makes wisdom rewarding.	10 Se il ferro si ottunde e non se ne affila il taglio, bisogna raddoppiare gli sforzi: il guadagno sta nel saper usare la saggezza.
11 If, for want of charming, the snake bites, the snake-charmer gets nothing out of it.	11 Se il serpente morde prima d’essere incantato, non c’è profitto per l’incantatore.
12 The sayings of a sage give pleasure, what a fool says procures his own ruin:	12 Le parole del saggio procurano stima, ma le labbra dello stolto lo mandano in rovina:
13 his words have their origin in stupidity and their ending in treacherous fol y.	13 l’esordio del suo parlare è sciocchezza, la fine del suo discorso pazzia funesta.
14 A fool talks a great deal, but none of us in fact can tel the future; what wil happen after us, who cantel ?	14 L’insensato moltiplica le parole, ma l’uomo non sa quello che accadrà: chi può indicargli ciò che avverrà dopo di lui?
15 A fool finds hard work very tiring, he cannot even find his own way into town.	15 Lo stolto si ammazza di fatica, ma non sa neppure andare in città.
16 Woe to you, country with a lad for king, and where princes start feasting in the morning!	16 Povero te, o paese, che per re hai un ragazzo e i tuoi prìncipi banchettano fin dal mattino!
17 Happy the land whose king is nobly born, where princes eat at a respectable hour to keepthemselves strong and not merely to revel!	17 Fortunato te, o paese, che per re hai un uomo libero e i tuoi prìncipi mangiano al tempo dovuto, per rinfrancarsi e non per gozzovigliare.
18 Thanks to idleness, the roof-tree gives way, thanks to carelessness, the house lets in the rain.	18 Per negligenza il soffitto crolla e per l’inerzia delle mani piove in casa.
19 We give parties to enjoy ourselves, wine makes us cheerful and money has an answer for everything.	19 Per stare lieti si fanno banchetti e il vino allieta la vita, ma il denaro risponde a ogni esigenza.
20 Do not abuse the king, even in thought, do not abuse a rich man, even in your bedroom, for a bird ofthe air might carry the news, a winged messenger might repeat what you have said.	20 Non dire male del re neppure con il pensiero e nella tua stanza da letto non dire male del potente, perché un uccello del cielo potrebbe trasportare la tua voce e un volatile riferire la tua parola.
