1 One dead fly can spoil the scent-maker's oil: a grain of stupidity outweighs wisdom and glory.	1 - Le mosche morte corrompono l'aroma dell'unguento:[così] più che la sapienza e la gloria ha peso un po' di follia.
2 The sage's heart leads him aright, the fool's leads him astray.	2 Il cuor del savio è alla sua destrae il cuor dello stolto alla sua sinistra.
3 A fool walks down the road, he has no wit -- and everyone remarks, 'How silly he is!'	3 E quando lo stolto cammina per via, essendo egli uno sciocco, tutti reputa stolti.
4 If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post; composure mitigates grave offences.	4 Se l'animo del potente si leva contro di te, non abbandonare il tuo posto; giacchè il rimedio [della calma] fa cessare le più grandi colpe.
5 One evil I observe under the sun: the sort of misjudgement to which rulers are prone-	5 C'è un male, ch'io vidi sotto il sole, derivante, qual errore, da chi governa:
6 fol y promoted to the top and the rich taking the lowest place.	6 lo stolto [cioè] posto nella dignità più altae i nobili confinati in basso.
7 I see slaves riding on horses and princes on foot like slaves.	7 Vidi schiavi a cavallo, e principi andare a piedi come schiavi.
8 He who digs a pit fal s into it, he who undermines a wal gets bitten by a snake,	8 Chi scava una fossa, ci cadrà dentro, e chi abbatte una siepe, lo morderà una serpe.
9 he who quarries stones gets hurt by them, he who chops wood takes a risk from it.	9 Chi smuove sassi ne sarà colpito, e chi spacca le legna, corre rischio d'esserne ferito.
10 If, for want of sharpening, the blade is blunt, you have to work twice as hard; but it is the outcome that makes wisdom rewarding.	10 Se spuntato è il ferro, e non è più come prima, ma ha perduto il taglio, molta fatica ci vuole ad affilarlo;[così] frutto d'industre lavoro è la sapienza.
11 If, for want of charming, the snake bites, the snake-charmer gets nothing out of it.	11 Se il serpe morde in silenzio, non è da meno di esso chi sparla in segreto.
12 The sayings of a sage give pleasure, what a fool says procures his own ruin:	12 Le parole della bocca del savio son [piene di] grazia; le labbra dello stolto lo mandano in rovina:
13 his words have their origin in stupidity and their ending in treacherous fol y.	13 il principio delle sue parole è stoltezza, e la fine del suo parlare, perniciosa follia.
14 A fool talks a great deal, but none of us in fact can tel the future; what wil happen after us, who cantel ?	14 Lo stolto moltiplica le parole, mentre l'uomo ignora quel che fu prima di lui, e chi mai potrebbe indicargli ciò che avverrà dopo?
15 A fool finds hard work very tiring, he cannot even find his own way into town.	15 Il travagliarsi degli stolti gli stanca [vanamente], giacchè non sanno [neppure] andare in città!
16 Woe to you, country with a lad for king, and where princes start feasting in the morning!	16 Guai a te, o paese, che hai per re un fanciullo, e i cui principi si rimpinzano [sin] dal mattino.
17 Happy the land whose king is nobly born, where princes eat at a respectable hour to keepthemselves strong and not merely to revel!	17 Beato il paese, il cui re è nobile, e i cui principi mangiano a tempo debito, per ristorar le forze e non per gozzoviglia.
18 Thanks to idleness, the roof-tree gives way, thanks to carelessness, the house lets in the rain.	18 Per via della pigrizia precipiterà il soffitto, e per l'inerzia delle mani farà acqua la casa.
19 We give parties to enjoy ourselves, wine makes us cheerful and money has an answer for everything.	19 A sollazzo banchettan [gli stolti], e del vino [abusano] per crapulare in vita: tutto obbedisce al danaro.
20 Do not abuse the king, even in thought, do not abuse a rich man, even in your bedroom, for a bird ofthe air might carry the news, a winged messenger might repeat what you have said.	20 [Neppur] col pensiero non sparlare del re, e [neppur] nel segreto di tua stanza non dir male del ricco: perchè gli ucccelli del cielo trasporteran la tua voce, e i volatili riferiran le tue parole.
