1 One dead fly can spoil the scent-maker's oil: a grain of stupidity outweighs wisdom and glory.	1 Le mosche morte nell'unguento ne guastano la soavità. Val più la piccola stoltezza a tempo, che la saggezza e la gloria.
2 The sage's heart leads him aright, the fool's leads him astray.	2 Il cuore del saggio va a destra: il cuor dello stolto a sinistra.
3 A fool walks down the road, he has no wit -- and everyone remarks, 'How silly he is!'	3 E di più lo stolto facendo sua strada, sendo egli privo di senno, tutti gli altri giudica stolti.
4 If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post; composure mitigates grave offences.	4 Se lo spirito del potente si muove contro di te, non abbandonare il tuo posto: perocché la curazione toglierà grandissimi peccati.
5 One evil I observe under the sun: the sort of misjudgement to which rulers are prone-	5 V'ha un disordine, che io ho veduto sotto del sole come derivante da errore del principe.
6 fol y promoted to the top and the rich taking the lowest place.	6 Uno stolto è messo in altissima dignità, e que' che son ricchi, si stanno a basso.
7 I see slaves riding on horses and princes on foot like slaves.	7 Vidi degli schiavi a cavallo, e de'principi, che camminavano a piedi, come gli schiavi.
8 He who digs a pit fal s into it, he who undermines a wal gets bitten by a snake,	8 Chi scava la fossa, vi caderà dentro; e chi rompe la siepe, sarà morso dalla serpe.
9 he who quarries stones gets hurt by them, he who chops wood takes a risk from it.	9 Chi smuove le pietre ne resterà offeso; e chi fende le legna si farà del male.
10 If, for want of sharpening, the blade is blunt, you have to work twice as hard; but it is the outcome that makes wisdom rewarding.	10 Se il ferro è diventato ottuso, e non è come prima, ma ha perduto il taglio, si affila' con molta fatica: (così) la sapienza va dietro all'industria.
11 If, for want of charming, the snake bites, the snake-charmer gets nothing out of it.	11 Il detrattore occulto non è dameno di una serpe, che morde senza romore.
12 The sayings of a sage give pleasure, what a fool says procures his own ruin:	12 Le parole della bocca di un sapiente hanno grazia; le labbra dello stolto sono la sua rovina.
13 his words have their origin in stupidity and their ending in treacherous fol y.	13 Il principio delle parole di lui è stoltezza, e la fine de' suoi discorsi è gravissimo errore.
14 A fool talks a great deal, but none of us in fact can tel the future; what wil happen after us, who cantel ?	14 Lo stolto ciancia molto. Quest'uomo non sa quel, che fu prima di lui; e quello sia per esser dopo di lui, chi potrà mai insegnarlo?
15 A fool finds hard work very tiring, he cannot even find his own way into town.	15 Le fatiche degli stolti saranno il loro tormento, perch'ei non sanno la strada per andare alla città.
16 Woe to you, country with a lad for king, and where princes start feasting in the morning!	16 Guai a te, o terra, che hai per re un fanciullo: ed ove i prìncipi mangiano di buon mattino.
17 Happy the land whose king is nobly born, where princes eat at a respectable hour to keepthemselves strong and not merely to revel!	17 Beata la terra, che ha un re nobile,e della quale i prìncipi mangiano al tempo usato per ristorarsi, non per gozzovigliare.
18 Thanks to idleness, the roof-tree gives way, thanks to carelessness, the house lets in the rain.	18 Per la pigrizia, e per la infingardaggine delle mani (del padrone), il palco della casa darà giù, e vi pioverà dentro.
19 We give parties to enjoy ourselves, wine makes us cheerful and money has an answer for everything.	19 Il pane, e il vino usano per riso vivendo per crapolare: e tutto ubbidisce al denaro.
20 Do not abuse the king, even in thought, do not abuse a rich man, even in your bedroom, for a bird ofthe air might carry the news, a winged messenger might repeat what you have said.	20 Non parlar male del re col tuo pensiero: e non criticare il ricco nel secreto della tua camera, perché gli uccelli dell'aria porteranno la tua parola, e i volatili riferiranno i tuoi sentimenti.
