1 One dead fly can spoil the scent-maker's oil: a grain of stupidity outweighs wisdom and glory.	1 Una mosca morta manda a male tutto un vasetto di unguento, un po' di stoltezza ha più peso della sapienza e della gloria.
2 The sage's heart leads him aright, the fool's leads him astray.	2 Il sapiente ha il cuore alla sua destra, lo stolto alla sua sinistra.
3 A fool walks down the road, he has no wit -- and everyone remarks, 'How silly he is!'	3 Anche per strada, mentre cammina, lo stolto non ha cervello e intanto pensa di tutti che sono stolti.
4 If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post; composure mitigates grave offences.	4 Se l'ira di un potente ti assale, non abbandonare il tuo posto, perché la mansuetudine pone rimedio a errori anche grandi.
5 One evil I observe under the sun: the sort of misjudgement to which rulers are prone-	5 Un altro male ho visto sotto il sole: il comportamento avventato di chi comanda.
6 fol y promoted to the top and the rich taking the lowest place.	6 Lo stolto è stato posto a coprire alte cariche e i potenti giacciono nelle più umili posizioni.
7 I see slaves riding on horses and princes on foot like slaves.	7 Ho visto servi a cavallo e prìncipi camminare a piedi come servi.
8 He who digs a pit fal s into it, he who undermines a wal gets bitten by a snake,	8 Chi scava una fossa, ci può cadere, e chi demolisce un muro, può essere morso da una serpe.
9 he who quarries stones gets hurt by them, he who chops wood takes a risk from it.	9 Chi trasporta pietre, si può ferire, e chi taglia la legna, si può far male.
10 If, for want of sharpening, the blade is blunt, you have to work twice as hard; but it is the outcome that makes wisdom rewarding.	10 Se il ferro si ottunde e non gli si fa di nuovo il filo, si deve aumentare lo sforzo: il vantaggio di chi si impegna è la sapienza.
11 If, for want of charming, the snake bites, the snake-charmer gets nothing out of it.	11 Se un serpente non incantato morde l'incantatore, per questo non c'è più speranza.
12 The sayings of a sage give pleasure, what a fool says procures his own ruin:	12 Le parole che escono dalla bocca del sapiente gli portano favore, ma quelle che escono dalle labbra dello stolto lo mandano in rovina.
13 his words have their origin in stupidity and their ending in treacherous fol y.	13 Se l'inizio dei suoi discorsi è stoltezza, la fine di ciò che dice è funesta follia.
14 A fool talks a great deal, but none of us in fact can tel the future; what wil happen after us, who cantel ?	14 Lo stolto moltiplica le parole, per quanto l'uomo non sappia che cosa avverrà, perché nessuno gli può dire che cosa avverrà in futuro.
15 A fool finds hard work very tiring, he cannot even find his own way into town.	15 La fatica dello stolto lo spossa, perché non sa andare in città.
16 Woe to you, country with a lad for king, and where princes start feasting in the morning!	16 Guai a te, o terra governata da un re che è un ragazzo, e i cui grandi pranzano al mattino.
17 Happy the land whose king is nobly born, where princes eat at a respectable hour to keepthemselves strong and not merely to revel!	17 Felice te, o terra governata da un re nobile, e i cui grandi mangiano quando è il momento.
18 Thanks to idleness, the roof-tree gives way, thanks to carelessness, the house lets in the rain.	18 Per la pigrizia delle mani crolla il soffitto, e per la loro inerzia pioverà in casa.
19 We give parties to enjoy ourselves, wine makes us cheerful and money has an answer for everything.	19 Per divertirsi mangiano e il vino rallegra la vita: il danaro poi provvede a tutto.
20 Do not abuse the king, even in thought, do not abuse a rich man, even in your bedroom, for a bird ofthe air might carry the news, a winged messenger might repeat what you have said.	20 Non parlar male del re nemmeno nella tua mente e non parlar male del potente nemmeno nella tua stanza da letto, perché un uccello dell'aria riferirà le tue parole e un signore delle ali dirà i tuoi discorsi.
