1 One dead fly can spoil the scent-maker's oil: a grain of stupidity outweighs wisdom and glory.	1 Una mosca muerta pudre una copa de ungüento de perfumista; monta más un poco de necedad que sabiduría y honor.
2 The sage's heart leads him aright, the fool's leads him astray.	2 El sabio tiene el corazón a la derecha, el necio tiene el corazón a la izquierda.
3 A fool walks down the road, he has no wit -- and everyone remarks, 'How silly he is!'	3 Además, en cualquier camino que tome el necio, su entendimiento no le da de sí y dice de todo el mundo: «Ese es un necio».
4 If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post; composure mitigates grave offences.	4 Si el enojo del que manda se abate sobre ti, no abandones tu puesto, que la flema libra de graves yerros.
5 One evil I observe under the sun: the sort of misjudgement to which rulers are prone-	5 Otra calamidad he visto bajo el sol, como error que emana de la autoridad:
6 fol y promoted to the top and the rich taking the lowest place.	6 La necedad elevada a grandes dignidades, mientras ricos se sentaban abajo.
7 I see slaves riding on horses and princes on foot like slaves.	7 He visto siervos a caballo, y príncipes que iban a pie, como los siervos.
8 He who digs a pit fal s into it, he who undermines a wal gets bitten by a snake,	8 El que cava la hoya cae en ella, y al que atraviesa el seto le muerde la culebra.
9 he who quarries stones gets hurt by them, he who chops wood takes a risk from it.	9 El que saca piedras se lastima con ellas, el que raja maderos puede hacerse daño.
10 If, for want of sharpening, the blade is blunt, you have to work twice as hard; but it is the outcome that makes wisdom rewarding.	10 Si se embota el hierro y no se afilan sus caras, hay que acrecentar los bríos: también supone ganancia afinar en sabiduría.
11 If, for want of charming, the snake bites, the snake-charmer gets nothing out of it.	11 Si pica culebra por falta de encatamiento no hay ganancia para el encantador.
12 The sayings of a sage give pleasure, what a fool says procures his own ruin:	12 Palabras de boca de sabio agradan, mas los labios del necio a él lo engullen.
13 his words have their origin in stupidity and their ending in treacherous fol y.	13 Empieza diciendo necedades, para acabar en locura de las malas.
14 A fool talks a great deal, but none of us in fact can tel the future; what wil happen after us, who cantel ?	14 Y el necio dice más y más palabras. Nadie sabe lo que vas venir, y el remate de todo, ¿quién puede pronosticárselo?
15 A fool finds hard work very tiring, he cannot even find his own way into town.	15 Lo que más molesta al necio es que no sabe ir a la ciudad.
16 Woe to you, country with a lad for king, and where princes start feasting in the morning!	16 ¡Ay de ti, tierra, cuyo rey es un chiquillo, y cuyos príncipes comen de mañana!
17 Happy the land whose king is nobly born, where princes eat at a respectable hour to keepthemselves strong and not merely to revel!	17 ¡Dichosa tú, tierra, cuyo rey es hidalgo y cuyos príncipes comen a la hora, por cobrar vigor y no por banquetear!
18 Thanks to idleness, the roof-tree gives way, thanks to carelessness, the house lets in the rain.	18 Por estar mano sobre mano se desploma la viga, y por brazos caídos la casa se viene abajo.
19 We give parties to enjoy ourselves, wine makes us cheerful and money has an answer for everything.	19 Para holgar preparan su banquete, y el vino alegra la vida, y el dinero todo lo allana.
20 Do not abuse the king, even in thought, do not abuse a rich man, even in your bedroom, for a bird ofthe air might carry the news, a winged messenger might repeat what you have said.	20 Ni aun en tu rincón faltes al rey, ni en tu misma alcoba faltes al rico, que un pájaro del cielo hace correr la voz, y un ser alado va a contar la cosa.
