1 One dead fly can spoil the scent-maker's oil: a grain of stupidity outweighs wisdom and glory.	1 LE mosche morte fanno putire, e ribollir l’olio odorifero del profumiere; così un poco di stoltizia guasta il pregio della sapienza e della gloria.
2 The sage's heart leads him aright, the fool's leads him astray.	2 L’uomo savio ha il suo cuore alla sua destra, e lo stolto l’ha alla sua sinistra.
3 A fool walks down the road, he has no wit -- and everyone remarks, 'How silly he is!'	3 Lo stolto, eziandio mentre egli cammina per la via, è scemo di senno, e dice a tutti ch’egli è stolto
4 If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post; composure mitigates grave offences.	4 Se il principe monta in ira contro a te, non lasciar però il tuo luogo; perciocchè la dolcezza fa perdonar di gran peccati.
5 One evil I observe under the sun: the sort of misjudgement to which rulers are prone-	5 Vi è un male che io ho veduto sotto il sole, simile all’errore che procede dal principe.
6 fol y promoted to the top and the rich taking the lowest place.	6 Cioè: che la stoltizia è posta in grandi altezze, ed i ricchi seggono in luoghi bassi.
7 I see slaves riding on horses and princes on foot like slaves.	7 Io ho veduti i servi a cavallo, ed i ricchi camminare a piè come servi.
8 He who digs a pit fal s into it, he who undermines a wal gets bitten by a snake,	8 Chi cava la fossa caderà in essa; e chi rompe la chiusura il serpente lo morderà.
9 he who quarries stones gets hurt by them, he who chops wood takes a risk from it.	9 Chi rimuove le pietre ne sarà offeso; chi spezza delle legne ne sarà in pericolo.
10 If, for want of sharpening, the blade is blunt, you have to work twice as hard; but it is the outcome that makes wisdom rewarding.	10 Se il ferro è rintuzzato, e non se ne arrota il taglio, bisogna raddoppiar la forza; ma la sapienza è cosa eccellente, per addirizzar le cose.
11 If, for want of charming, the snake bites, the snake-charmer gets nothing out of it.	11 Se il serpente morde, non essendo incantato, niente meglio vale il maldicente
12 The sayings of a sage give pleasure, what a fool says procures his own ruin:	12 Le parole della bocca del savio non sono altro che grazia; ma le labbra dello stolto lo distruggono.
13 his words have their origin in stupidity and their ending in treacherous fol y.	13 Il principio delle parole della sua bocca è stoltizia, ed il fine del suo parlare è mala pazzia.
14 A fool talks a great deal, but none of us in fact can tel the future; what wil happen after us, who cantel ?	14 Benchè lo stolto moltiplichi le parole, l’uomo pur non sa ciò che ha da essere; e chi gli dichiarerà ciò che sarà dopo lui?
15 A fool finds hard work very tiring, he cannot even find his own way into town.	15 La fatica degli stolti li stanca; perciocchè non sanno la via per andare alla città
16 Woe to you, country with a lad for king, and where princes start feasting in the morning!	16 Guai a te, o paese, il cui re è fanciullo, ed i cui principi mangiano fin dalla mattina!
17 Happy the land whose king is nobly born, where princes eat at a respectable hour to keepthemselves strong and not merely to revel!	17 Beato te, o paese, il cui re è di legnaggio nobile, ed i cui principi mangiano a tempo convenevole, per ristoro, e non per ebbrezza!
18 Thanks to idleness, the roof-tree gives way, thanks to carelessness, the house lets in the rain.	18 Per la pigrizia di ambe le mani il solaio scade, e per le mani spenzolate gocciola in casa.
19 We give parties to enjoy ourselves, wine makes us cheerful and money has an answer for everything.	19 I conviti si fanno per gioire, e il vino rallegra i viventi; ed i danari rispondono a tutto.
20 Do not abuse the king, even in thought, do not abuse a rich man, even in your bedroom, for a bird ofthe air might carry the news, a winged messenger might repeat what you have said.	20 Non dir male del re, non pur nel tuo pensiero; e non dir male del ricco nella camera dove tu giaci; perciocchè alcun uccello del cielo potrebbe portarne la voce, ed alcun animale alato rapportarne le parole
