Proverbs 1

NEW JERUSALEM	LXX
1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:	1 παροιμιαι σαλωμωντος υιου δαυιδ ος εβασιλευσεν εν ισραηλ
2 for learning what wisdom and discipline are, for understanding words of deep meaning,	2 γνωναι σοφιαν και παιδειαν νοησαι τε λογους φρονησεως
3 for acquiring a disciplined insight, uprightness, justice and fair dealing;	3 δεξασθαι τε στροφας λογων νοησαι τε δικαιοσυνην αληθη και κριμα κατευθυνειν
4 for teaching sound judgement to the simple, and knowledge and reflection to the young;	4 ινα δω ακακοις πανουργιαν παιδι δε νεω αισθησιν τε και εννοιαν
5 Let the wise listen and learn yet more, and a person of discernment wil acquire the art of guidance.	5 τωνδε γαρ ακουσας σοφος σοφωτερος εσται ο δε νοημων κυβερνησιν κτησεται
6 for perceiving the meaning of proverbs and obscure sayings, the sayings of the sages and their riddles.	6 νοησει τε παραβολην και σκοτεινον λογον ρησεις τε σοφων και αινιγματα
7 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; fools spurn wisdom and discipline.	7 αρχη σοφιας φοβος θεου συνεσις δε αγαθη πασι τοις ποιουσιν αυτην ευσεβεια δε εις θεον αρχη αισθησεως σοφιαν δε και παιδειαν ασεβεις εξουθενησουσιν
8 Listen, my child, to your father's instruction, do not reject your mother's teaching:	8 ακουε υιε παιδειαν πατρος σου και μη απωση θεσμους μητρος σου
9 they wil be a crown of grace for your head, a circlet for your neck.	9 στεφανον γαρ χαριτων δεξη ση κορυφη και κλοιον χρυσεον περι σω τραχηλω
10 My child, if sinners try to seduce you, do not go with them.	10 υιε μη σε πλανησωσιν ανδρες ασεβεις μηδε βουληθης εαν παρακαλεσωσι σε λεγοντες
11 If they say, 'Come with us: let us lie in ambush to shed blood; if we plan an ambush for the innocentwithout provocation,	11 ελθε μεθ' ημων κοινωνησον αιματος κρυψωμεν δε εις γην ανδρα δικαιον αδικως
12 we can swal ow them alive, like Sheol, and whole, like those who sink into oblivion.	12 καταπιωμεν δε αυτον ωσπερ αδης ζωντα και αρωμεν αυτου την μνημην εκ γης
13 We shal find treasures of every sort, we shall fil our houses with plunder;	13 την κτησιν αυτου την πολυτελη καταλαβωμεθα πλησωμεν δε οικους ημετερους σκυλων
14 throw in your lot with us: one purse between us al .'	14 τον δε σον κληρον βαλε εν ημιν κοινον δε βαλλαντιον κτησωμεθα παντες και μαρσιππιον εν γενηθητω ημιν
15 My child, do not fol ow them in their way, keep your steps out of their path	15 μη πορευθης εν οδω μετ' αυτων εκκλινον δε τον ποδα σου εκ των τριβων αυτων
16 for their feet hasten to evil, they are quick to shed blood;	16 οι γαρ ποδες αυτων εις κακιαν τρεχουσιν και ταχινοι του εκχεαι αιμα
17 for the net is spread in vain if any winged creature can see it.	17 ου γαρ αδικως εκτεινεται δικτυα πτερωτοις
18 It is for their own blood such people lie in wait, their ambush is against their own selves!	18 αυτοι γαρ οι φονου μετεχοντες θησαυριζουσιν εαυτοις κακα η δε καταστροφη ανδρων παρανομων κακη
19 Such are the paths of al who seek dishonest gain: which robs of their lives al who take it for their own.	19 αυται αι οδοι εισιν παντων των συντελουντων τα ανομα τη γαρ ασεβεια την εαυτων ψυχην αφαιρουνται
20 Wisdom cal s aloud in the streets, she raises her voice in the public squares;	20 σοφια εν εξοδοις υμνειται εν δε πλατειαις παρρησιαν αγει
21 she cal s out at the street corners, she delivers her message at the city gates.	21 επ' ακρων δε τειχεων κηρυσσεται επι δε πυλαις δυναστων παρεδρευει επι δε πυλαις πολεως θαρρουσα λεγει
22 'You simple people, how much longer will you cling to your simple ways? How much longer willmockers revel in their mocking and fools go on hating knowledge?	22 οσον αν χρονον ακακοι εχωνται της δικαιοσυνης ουκ αισχυνθησονται οι δε αφρονες της υβρεως οντες επιθυμηται ασεβεις γενομενοι εμισησαν αισθησιν
23 Pay attention to my warning. To you I wil pour out my heart and tel you what I have to say.	23 και υπευθυνοι εγενοντο ελεγχοις ιδου προησομαι υμιν εμης πνοης ρησιν διδαξω δε υμας τον εμον λογον
24 Since I have cal ed and you have refused me, since I have beckoned and no one has taken notice,	24 επειδη εκαλουν και ουχ υπηκουσατε και εξετεινον λογους και ου προσειχετε
25 since you have ignored al my advice and rejected al my warnings,	25 αλλα ακυρους εποιειτε εμας βουλας τοις δε εμοις ελεγχοις ηπειθησατε
26 I, for my part, shall laugh at your distress, I shal jeer when terror befal s you,	26 τοιγαρουν καγω τη υμετερα απωλεια επιγελασομαι καταχαρουμαι δε ηνικα αν ερχηται υμιν ολεθρος
27 when terror befal s you, like a storm, when your distress arrives, like a whirlwind, when ordeal andanguish bear down on you.	27 και ως αν αφικηται υμιν αφνω θορυβος η δε καταστροφη ομοιως καταιγιδι παρη και οταν ερχηται υμιν θλιψις και πολιορκια η οταν ερχηται υμιν ολεθρος
28 Then they will cal me, but I shal not answer, they wil look eagerly for me and will not find me.	28 εσται γαρ οταν επικαλεσησθε με εγω δε ουκ εισακουσομαι υμων ζητησουσιν με κακοι και ουχ ευρησουσιν
29 They have hated knowledge, they have not chosen the fear of Yahweh,	29 εμισησαν γαρ σοφιαν τον δε φοβον του κυριου ου προειλαντο
30 they have taken no notice of my advice, they have spurned al my warnings:	30 ουδε ηθελον εμαις προσεχειν βουλαις εμυκτηριζον δε εμους ελεγχους
31 so they wil have to eat the fruits of their own ways of life, and choke themselves with their ownscheming.	31 τοιγαρουν εδονται της εαυτων οδου τους καρπους και της εαυτων ασεβειας πλησθησονται
32 For the errors of the simple lead to their death, the complacency of fools works their own ruin;	32 ανθ' ων γαρ ηδικουν νηπιους φονευθησονται και εξετασμος ασεβεις ολει
33 but whoever listens to me may live secure, will have quiet, fearing no mischance.'	33 ο δε εμου ακουων κατασκηνωσει επ' ελπιδι και ησυχασει αφοβως απο παντος κακου
