Psalms 89

NEW JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 [Poem For Ethan the native-born] I shal sing the faithful love of Yahweh for ever, from age to age mylips shall declare your constancy,	1 A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.
2 for you have said: love is built to last for ever, you have fixed your constancy firm in the heavens.	2 The promises of the LORD I will sing forever, proclaim your loyalty through all ages.
3 'I have made a covenant with my Chosen One, sworn an oath to my servant David:	3 For you said, "My love is established forever; my loyalty will stand as long as the heavens.
4 I have made your dynasty firm for ever, built your throne stable age after age.'Pause	4 I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant:
5 The heavens praise your wonders, Yahweh, your constancy in the gathering of your faithful.	5 I will make your dynasty stand forever and establish your throne through all ages." Selah
6 Who in the skies can compare with Yahweh? Who among the sons of god can rival him?	6 The heavens praise your marvels, LORD, your loyalty in the assembly of the holy ones.
7 God, awesome in the assembly of holy ones, great and dreaded among al who surround him,	7 Who in the skies ranks with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the gods?
8 Yahweh, God Sabaoth, who is like you? Mighty Yahweh, your constancy is al round you!	8 A God dreaded in the council of the holy ones, greater and more awesome than all who sit there!
9 You control the pride of the ocean, when its waves ride high you calm them.	9 LORD, God of hosts, who is like you? Mighty LORD, your loyalty is always present.
10 You split Rahab in two like a corpse, scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.	10 You rule the raging sea; you still its swelling waves.
11 Yours are the heavens and yours the earth, the world and al it holds, you founded them;	11 You crushed Rahab with a mortal blow; your strong arm scattered your foes.
12 you created the north and the south, Tabor and Hermon hail your name with joy.	12 Yours are the heavens, yours the earth; you founded the world and everything in it.
13 Yours is a strong arm, mighty your hand, your right hand raised high;	13 Zaphon and Amanus you created; Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name.
14 Saving Justice and Fair Judgement the foundations of your throne, Faithful Love and Constancymarch before you.	14 Mighty your arm, strong your hand, your right hand is ever exalted.
15 How blessed the nation that learns to acclaim you! They will live, Yahweh, in the light of yourpresence.	15 Justice and judgment are the foundation of your throne; love and loyalty march before you.
16 In your name they rejoice al day long, by your saving justice they are raised up.	16 Happy the people who know you, LORD, who walk in the radiance of your face.
17 You are the flower of their strength, by your favour our strength is triumphant;	17 In your name they sing joyfully all the day; at your victory they raise the festal shout.
18 for to Yahweh belongs our shield, to the Holy One of Israel our king.	18 You are their majestic strength; by your favor our horn is exalted.
19 Once you spoke in a vision, to your faithful you said: 'I have given strength to a warrior, I have raisedup a man chosen from my people.	19 Truly the LORD is our shield, the Holy One of Israel, our king!
20 'I have found David my servant, and anointed him with my holy oil.	20 Once you spoke in vision; to your faithful ones you said: "I have set a leader over the warriors; I have raised up a hero from the army.
21 My hand wil always be with him, my arm wil make him strong.	21 I have chosen David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him.
22 'No enemy wil be able to outwit him, no wicked man overcome him;	22 My hand will be with him; my arm will make him strong.
23 I shal crush his enemies before him, strike his opponents dead.	23 No enemy shall outwit him, nor shall the wicked defeat him.
24 'My constancy and faithful love will be with him, in my name his strength wil be triumphant.	24 I will crush his foes before him, strike down those who hate him.
25 I shal establish his power over the sea, his dominion over the rivers.	25 My loyalty and love will be with him; through my name his horn will be exalted.
26 'He wil cry to me, "You are my father, my God, the rock of my salvation!"	26 I will set his hand upon the sea, his right hand upon the rivers.
27 So I shal make him my first-born, the highest of earthly kings.	27 He shall cry to me,'You are my father, my God, the Rock that brings me victory!'
28 'I shal maintain my faithful love for him always, my covenant with him wil stay firm.	28 I myself make him firstborn, Most High over the kings of the earth.
29 I have established his dynasty for ever, his throne to be as lasting as the heavens.	29 Forever I will maintain my love for him; my covenant with him stands firm.
30 'Should his descendants desert my law, and not keep to my rulings,	30 I will establish his dynasty forever, his throne as the days of the heavens.
31 should they violate my statutes, and not observe my commandments,	31 If his descendants forsake my law, do not follow my decrees,
32 'then I shal punish their offences with the rod, their guilt with the whip,	32 If they fail to observe my statutes, do not keep my commandments,
33 but I shal never withdraw from him my faithful love, I shal not belie my constancy.	33 I will punish their crime with a rod and their guilt with lashes.
34 'I shal not violate my covenant, I shal not withdraw the word once spoken.	34 But I will not take my love from him, nor will I betray my bond of loyalty.
35 I have sworn by my holiness, once and for al , never will I break faith with David.	35 I will not violate my covenant; the promise of my lips I will not alter.
36 'His dynasty shal endure for ever, his throne like the sun before me,	36 By my holiness I swore once for all: I will never be false to David.
37 as the moon is established for ever, a faithful witness in the skies.'Pause	37 His dynasty will continue forever, his throne, like the sun before me.
38 Yet you yourself -- you have spurned and rejected, and have vented your wrath on your anointed,	38 Like the moon it will stand eternal, forever firm like the sky!" Selah
39 you have repudiated the covenant with your servant, dishonoured his crown in the dust.	39 But now you have rejected and spurned, been enraged at your anointed.
40 You have pierced al his defences, and laid his strongholds in ruins,	40 You renounced the covenant with your servant, defiled his crown in the dust.
41 everyone passing by plunders him, he has become the butt of his neighbours.	41 You broke down all his defenses, left his strongholds in ruins.
42 You have raised high the right hand of his opponents, have made al his enemies happy;	42 All who pass through seize plunder; his neighbors deride him.
43 you have snapped off his sword on a rock, and failed to support him in battle.	43 You have exalted the right hand of his foes, have gladdened all his enemies.
44 You have stripped him of his splendid sceptre, and toppled his throne to the ground.	44 You turned back his sharp sword, did not support him in battle.
45 You have aged him before his time, enveloped him in shame.Pause	45 You brought to an end his splendor, hurled his throne to the ground.
46 How long, Yahweh, will you remain hidden? For ever? Is your anger to go on smouldering like a fire?	46 You cut short the days of his youth, covered him with shame. Selah
47 Remember me; how long have I left? For what pointless end did you create al the children of Adam?	47 How long, LORD? Will you stay hidden forever? Must your wrath smolder like fire?
48 Who can live and never see death? Who can save himself from the clutches of Sheol?Pause	48 Remember how brief is my life, how frail the race you created!
49 Lord, what of those pledges of your faithful love? You made an oath to David by your constancy.	49 What mortal can live and not see death? Who can escape the power of Sheol? Selah
50 Do not forget the insults to your servant; I take to heart the taunts of the nations,	50 Where are your promises of old, Lord, the loyalty sworn to David?
51 which your enemies have level ed, Yahweh, have level ed at the footsteps of your anointed!	51 Remember, Lord, the insults to your servants, how I bear all the slanders of the nations.
52 Blessed be Yahweh for ever. Amen, Amen.	52 Your enemies, LORD, insult your anointed; they insult my every endeavor.
	53 Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and amen!
