[Poem For Ethan the native-born] I shal sing the faithful love of Yahweh for ever, from age to age mylips shall declare your constancy,1 Of understanding, for Ethan the Ezrahite.
for you have said: love is built to last for ever, you have fixed your constancy firm in the heavens.2 The mercies of the Lord I will sing for ever. I will shew forth thy truth with my mouth to generation and generation.
'I have made a covenant with my Chosen One, sworn an oath to my servant David:3 For thou hast said: Mercy shall be built up for ever in the heavens: thy truth shall be prepared in them.
I have made your dynasty firm for ever, built your throne stable age after age.'Pause4 I have made a covenant with my elect: I have sworn to David my servant:
The heavens praise your wonders, Yahweh, your constancy in the gathering of your faithful.5 Thy seed will I settle for ever. And I will build up thy throne unto generation and generation.
Who in the skies can compare with Yahweh? Who among the sons of god can rival him?6 The heavens shall confess thy wonders, O Lord: and thy truth in the church of the saints.
God, awesome in the assembly of holy ones, great and dreaded among al who surround him,7 For who in the clouds can be compared to the Lord: or who among the sons of God shall be like to God?
Yahweh, God Sabaoth, who is like you? Mighty Yahweh, your constancy is al round you!8 God, who is glorified in the assembly of the saints: great and terrible above all them that are about him.
You control the pride of the ocean, when its waves ride high you calm them.9 O Lord God of hosts, who is like to thee? thou art mighty, O Lord, and thy truth is round about thee.
You split Rahab in two like a corpse, scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.10 Thou rulest the power of the sea: and appeasest the motion of the waves thereof.
Yours are the heavens and yours the earth, the world and al it holds, you founded them;11 Thou hast humbled the proud one, as one that is slain: with the arm of thy strength thou hast scattered thy enemies.
you created the north and the south, Tabor and Hermon hail your name with joy.12 Thine are the heavens, and thine is the earth: the world and the fulness thereof thou hast founded:
Yours is a strong arm, mighty your hand, your right hand raised high;13 the north and the sea thou hast created. Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name:
Saving Justice and Fair Judgement the foundations of your throne, Faithful Love and Constancymarch before you.14 thy arm is with might. Let thy hand be strengthened, and thy right hand exalted:
How blessed the nation that learns to acclaim you! They will live, Yahweh, in the light of yourpresence.15 justice and judgment are the preparation of thy throne. Mercy and truth shall go before thy face:
In your name they rejoice al day long, by your saving justice they are raised up.16 blessed is the people that knoweth jubilation. They shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance:
You are the flower of their strength, by your favour our strength is triumphant;17 and in thy name they shall rejoice all the day, and in thy justice they shall be exalted.
for to Yahweh belongs our shield, to the Holy One of Israel our king.18 For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy good pleasure shall our horn be exalted.
Once you spoke in a vision, to your faithful you said: 'I have given strength to a warrior, I have raisedup a man chosen from my people.19 For our protection is of the Lord, and of our king the holy one of Israel.
'I have found David my servant, and anointed him with my holy oil.20 Then thou spokest in a vision to thy saints, and saidst: I have laid help upon one that is mighty, and have exalted one chosen out of my people.
My hand wil always be with him, my arm wil make him strong.21 I have found David my servant: with my holy oil I have anointed him.
'No enemy wil be able to outwit him, no wicked man overcome him;22 For my hand shall help him: and my arm shall strengthen him.
I shal crush his enemies before him, strike his opponents dead.23 The enemy shall have no advantage over him: nor the son of iniquity have power to hurt him.
'My constancy and faithful love will be with him, in my name his strength wil be triumphant.24 And I will cut down his enemies before his face; and them that hate him I will put to flight.
I shal establish his power over the sea, his dominion over the rivers.25 And my truth and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.
'He wil cry to me, "You are my father, my God, the rock of my salvation!"26 And I will set his hand in the sea; and his right hand in the rivers.
So I shal make him my first-born, the highest of earthly kings.27 He shall cry out to me: Thou art my father: my God, and the support of my salvation.
'I shal maintain my faithful love for him always, my covenant with him wil stay firm.28 And I will make him my firstborn, high above the kings of the earth.
I have established his dynasty for ever, his throne to be as lasting as the heavens.29 I will keep my mercy for him for ever: and my covenant faithful to him.
'Should his descendants desert my law, and not keep to my rulings,30 And I will make his seed to endure for evermore: and his throne as the days of heaven.
should they violate my statutes, and not observe my commandments,31 And if his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments:
'then I shal punish their offences with the rod, their guilt with the whip,32 If they profane my justices: and keep not my commandments:
but I shal never withdraw from him my faithful love, I shal not belie my constancy.33 I will visit their iniquities with a rod: and their sins with stripes.
'I shal not violate my covenant, I shal not withdraw the word once spoken.34 But my mercy I will not take away from him: nor will I suffer my truth to fail.
I have sworn by my holiness, once and for al , never will I break faith with David.35 Neither will I profane my covenant: and the words that proceed from my mouth I will not make void.
'His dynasty shal endure for ever, his throne like the sun before me,36 Once have I sworn by my holiness: I will not lie unto David:
as the moon is established for ever, a faithful witness in the skies.'Pause37 his seed shall endure for ever.
Yet you yourself -- you have spurned and rejected, and have vented your wrath on your anointed,38 And his throne as the sun before me: and as the moon perfect for ever, and a faithful witness in heaven.
you have repudiated the covenant with your servant, dishonoured his crown in the dust.39 But thou hast rejected and despised: thou hast been angry with thy anointed.
You have pierced al his defences, and laid his strongholds in ruins,40 Thou hast overthrown the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his sanctuary on the earth.
everyone passing by plunders him, he has become the butt of his neighbours.41 Thou hast broken down all his hedges: thou hast made his strength fear.
You have raised high the right hand of his opponents, have made al his enemies happy;42 All that pass by the way have robbed him: he is become a reproach to his neighbours.
you have snapped off his sword on a rock, and failed to support him in battle.43 Thou hast set up the right hand of them that oppress him: thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.
You have stripped him of his splendid sceptre, and toppled his throne to the ground.44 Thou hast turned away the help of his sword; and hast not assisted him in battle.
You have aged him before his time, enveloped him in shame.Pause45 Thou hast made his purification to cease: and thou hast cast his throne down to the ground.
How long, Yahweh, will you remain hidden? For ever? Is your anger to go on smouldering like a fire?46 Thou hast shortened the days of his time: thou hast covered him with confusion.
Remember me; how long have I left? For what pointless end did you create al the children of Adam?47 How long, O Lord, turnest thou away unto the end? shall thy anger burn like fire?
Who can live and never see death? Who can save himself from the clutches of Sheol?Pause48 Remember what my substance is for hast thou made all the children of men in vain?
Lord, what of those pledges of your faithful love? You made an oath to David by your constancy.49 Who is the man that shall live, and not see death: that shall deliver his soul from the hand of hell?
Do not forget the insults to your servant; I take to heart the taunts of the nations,50 Lord, where are thy ancient mercies, according to what thou didst swear to David in thy truth?
which your enemies have level ed, Yahweh, have level ed at the footsteps of your anointed!51 Be mindful, O Lord, of the reproach of thy servants (which I have held in my bosom) of many nations:
Blessed be Yahweh for ever. Amen, Amen.52 Wherewith thy enemies have reproached, O Lord; wherewith they have reproached the change of thy anointed.
Blessed be the Lord for evermore. So be it. So be it.
