[For the choirmaster To the tune 'The decree is a lily' In a quiet voice Of David To be learnt When hewas at war with Aram-Naharaim and Aram-Zobah, and Joab marched back to destroy twelve thousand Edomitesin the Val ey of Salt] God, you have rejected us, broken us, you were angry, come back to us!1 For the leader; according to "The Lily of...." A miktam of David (for teaching),
You made the earth tremble, split it open; now mend the rifts, it is tottering stil .2 when he fought against Aram-Naharaim and Aram-Zobah; and Joab, coming back, killed twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
You have forced your people to drink a bitter draught, forced us to drink a wine that made us reel.3 O God, you rejected us, broke our defenses; you were angry but now revive us.
You gave a signal to those who fear you to let them escape out of range of the bow.Pause4 You rocked the earth, split it open; repair the cracks for it totters.
To rescue those you love, save with your right hand and answer us.5 You made your people go through hardship, made us stagger from the wine you gave us.
God has spoken from his sanctuary, 'In triumph I wil divide up Shechem, and share out the Valley ofSuccoth.6 Raise up a flag for those who revere you, a refuge for them out of bow shot. Selah
'Mine is Gilead, mine Manasseh, Ephraim the helmet on my head, Judah my commander's baton,7 Help with your right hand and answer us that your loved ones may escape.
'Moab a bowl for me to wash in, on Edom I plant my sandal. Now try shouting "Victory!" over me,Philistia!'8 In the sanctuary God promised: "I will exult, will apportion Shechem; the valley of Succoth I will measure out.
Who wil lead me against a fortified city, who wil guide me into Edom,9 Gilead is mine, mine is Manasseh; Ephraim is the helmet for my head, Judah, my own scepter.
if not you, the God who has rejected us? God, you no longer march with our armies.10 Moab is my washbowl; upon Edom I cast my sandal. I will triumph over Philistia."
Bring us help in our time of crisis, any human help is worthless.11 Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me into Edom?
With God we shal do deeds of valour, he wil trample down our enemies.12 Was it not you who rejected us, God? Do you no longer march with our armies?
Give us aid against the foe; worthless is human help.
We will triumph with the help of God, who will trample down our foes.
