NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept at the memory of Zion.1 Super flumina Babylonis,
illic sedimus et flevimus,
cum recordaremur Sion.
2 On the poplars there we had hung up our harps.2 In salicibus in medio eius
suspendimus citharas nostras.
3 For there our gaolers had asked us to sing them a song, our captors to make merry, 'Sing us one ofthe songs of Zion.'3 Quia illic rogaverunt nos,
qui captivos duxerunt nos,
verba cantionum,
et, qui affligebant nos, laetitiam:
“ Cantate nobis de canticis Sion ”.
4 How could we sing a song of Yahweh on alien soil?4 Quomodo cantabimus canticum Domini
in terra aliena?
5 If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand wither!5 Si oblitus fuero tui, Ierusalem,
oblivioni detur dextera mea;
6 May my tongue remain stuck to my palate if I do not keep you in mind, if I do not count Jerusalem thegreatest of my joys.6 adhaereat lingua mea faucibus meis,
si non meminero tui,
si non praeposuero Ierusalem
in capite laetitiae meae.
7 Remember, Yahweh, to the Edomites' cost, the day of Jerusalem, how they said, 'Down with it! Raseit to the ground!'7 Memor esto, Domine, adversus filios Edom
diei Ierusalem;
qui dicebant: “ Exinanite, exinanite
usque ad fundamentum in ea ”.
8 Daughter of Babel, doomed to destruction, a blessing on anyone who treats you as you treated us,8 Filia Babylonis devastans,
beatus, qui retribuet tibi retributionem tuam,
quam retribuisti nobis;
9 a blessing on anyone who seizes your babies and shatters them against a rock!9 beatus, qui tenebit
et allidet parvulos tuos ad petram.
