NEW JERUSALEMLXX
Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:1 υπολαβων δε ελιφας ο θαιμανιτης λεγει
Does anyone wise respond with windy arguments, or feed on an east wind?2 ποτερον σοφος αποκρισιν δωσει συνεσεως πνευματος και ενεπλησεν πονον γαστρος
Or make a defence with ineffectual words and speeches good for nothing?3 ελεγχων εν ρημασιν οις ου δει εν λογοις οις ουδεν οφελος
You do worse: you suppress reverence, you discredit discussion before God.4 ου και συ απεποιησω φοβον συνετελεσω δε ρηματα τοιαυτα εναντι του κυριου
Your very fault incites you to speak like this, hence you adopt this language of cunning.5 ενοχος ει ρημασιν στοματος σου ουδε διεκρινας ρηματα δυναστων
Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips bear witness against you.6 ελεγξαι σε το σον στομα και μη εγω τα δε χειλη σου καταμαρτυρησουσιν σου
Are you the first-born of the human race, brought into the world before the hills?7 τι γαρ μη πρωτος ανθρωπων εγενηθης η προ θινων επαγης
Have you been a listener at God's council, or established a monopoly of wisdom?8 η συνταγμα κυριου ακηκοας εις δε σε αφικετο σοφια
What knowledge do you have that we have not, what understanding that is not ours too?9 τι γαρ οιδας ο ουκ οιδαμεν η τι συνιεις ο ουχι και ημεις
One of us is an old, grey-headed man loaded with more years than your father!10 και γε πρεσβυτης και γε παλαιος εν ημιν βαρυτερος του πατρος σου ημεραις
Can you ignore these divine consolations and the moderate tone of our words?11 ολιγα ων ημαρτηκας μεμαστιγωσαι μεγαλως υπερβαλλοντως λελαληκας
How passion carries you away! And how you rol your eyes,12 τι ετολμησεν η καρδια σου η τι επηνεγκαν οι οφθαλμοι σου
when you vent your anger on God and speeches come tripping off your tongue!13 οτι θυμον ερρηξας εναντι κυριου εξηγαγες δε εκ στοματος ρηματα τοιαυτα
How can anyone be pure, anyone born of woman be upright?14 τις γαρ ων βροτος οτι εσται αμεμπτος η ως εσομενος δικαιος γεννητος γυναικος
God cannot rely even on his holy ones, to him, even the heavens seem impure.15 ει κατα αγιων ου πιστευει ουρανος δε ου καθαρος εναντιον αυτου
How much more, this hateful, corrupt thing, humanity, which soaks up wickedness like water!16 εα δε εβδελυγμενος και ακαθαρτος ανηρ πινων αδικιας ισα ποτω
Listen to me, I have a lesson for you: I am going to impart my own experience17 αναγγελω δε σοι ακουε μου α δη εωρακα αναγγελω σοι
and the tradition of the sages who have remained faithful to their ancestors,18 α σοφοι ερουσιν και ουκ εκρυψαν πατερας αυτων
to whom alone the land was given -- no foreigner included among them.19 αυτοις μονοις εδοθη η γη και ουκ επηλθεν αλλογενης επ' αυτους
The life of the wicked is unceasing torment, the years al otted to the tyrant are numbered.20 πας ο βιος ασεβους εν φροντιδι ετη δε αριθμητα δεδομενα δυναστη
A cry of panic echoes in his ear; when al is peace, his destroyer swoops down on him.21 ο δε φοβος αυτου εν ωσιν αυτου οταν δοκη ηδη ειρηνευειν ηξει αυτου η καταστροφη
No more can he count on escaping from the dark, but knows that he is destined for the sword,22 μη πιστευετω αποστραφηναι απο σκοτους εντεταλται γαρ ηδη εις χειρας σιδηρου
marked down as meat for the vulture. He knows that his ruin is at hand.23 κατατετακται δε εις σιτα γυψιν οιδεν δε εν εαυτω οτι μενει εις πτωμα ημερα δε αυτον σκοτεινη στροβησει
The hour of darkness terrifies him, distress and anguish assail him as when a king is poised for theassault.24 αναγκη δε και θλιψις αυτον καθεξει ωσπερ στρατηγος πρωτοστατης πιπτων
He raised his hand against God, boldly he defied Shaddai!25 οτι ηρκεν χειρας εναντιον του κυριου εναντι δε κυριου παντοκρατορος ετραχηλιασεν
Head lowered, he charged him, with his massively bossed shield.26 εδραμεν δε εναντιον αυτου υβρει εν παχει νωτου ασπιδος αυτου
His face had grown ful and fat, and his thighs too heavy with flesh.27 οτι εκαλυψεν το προσωπον αυτου εν στεατι αυτου και εποιησεν περιστομιον επι των μηριων
He had occupied the towns he had destroyed, with their uninhabited houses about to fal into ruins;28 αυλισθειη δε πολεις ερημους εισελθοι δε εις οικους αοικητους α δε εκεινοι ητοιμασαν αλλοι αποισονται
but no great profit to him, his luck will not hold, he wil cast his shadow over the country no longer,29 ουτε μη πλουτισθη ουτε μη μεινη αυτου τα υπαρχοντα ου μη βαλη επι την γην σκιαν
(he wil not escape the dark). A flame wil scorch his young shoots, the wind will carry off his blossom.30 ουδε μη εκφυγη το σκοτος τον βλαστον αυτου μαραναι ανεμος εκπεσοι δε αυτου το ανθος
Let him not trust in his great height or delusion will be his.31 μη πιστευετω οτι υπομενει κενα γαρ αποβησεται αυτω
His palm trees wil wither before their time and his branches never again be green.32 η τομη αυτου προ ωρας φθαρησεται και ο ραδαμνος αυτου ου μη πυκαση
Like the vine, he wil shake off his unripe fruit, like the olive tree, shed his blossom.33 τρυγηθειη δε ωσπερ ομφαξ προ ωρας εκπεσοι δε ως ανθος ελαιας
Yes, sterile is the spawn of the sinner, and fire consumes the tents of the venal.34 μαρτυριον γαρ ασεβους θανατος πυρ δε καυσει οικους δωροδεκτων
Whoever conceives malice, breeds disaster, bears as offspring only a false hope.35 εν γαστρι δε λημψεται οδυνας αποβησεται δε αυτω κενα η δε κοιλια αυτου υποισει δολον
