NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose e disse:
2 Does anyone wise respond with windy arguments, or feed on an east wind?	2 Deve un uomo savio pronunziare opinioni vane, Ed empiersi il ventre di vento orientale?
3 Or make a defence with ineffectual words and speeches good for nothing?	3 Ed argomentar con parole inutili, E con ragionamenti onde non può trarre alcun vantaggio?
4 You do worse: you suppress reverence, you discredit discussion before God.	4 Sì certo, tu annulli il timor di Dio, Ed impedisci l’orazione che deve farsi davanti a lui.
5 Your very fault incites you to speak like this, hence you adopt this language of cunning.	5 Perciocchè la tua bocca dimostra la tua iniquità, Poichè tu hai scelto il parlar de’ frodolenti.
6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips bear witness against you.	6 La tua bocca ti condanna, e non io; E le tue labbra testificano contro a te.
7 Are you the first-born of the human race, brought into the world before the hills?	7 Sei tu il primiero uomo che sia nato nel mondo? O sei tu stato formato avanti i colli?
8 Have you been a listener at God's council, or established a monopoly of wisdom?	8 Hai tu udito il segreto di Dio, E ne hai tu sottratta a te la sapienza?
9 What knowledge do you have that we have not, what understanding that is not ours too?	9 Che sai tu, che noi non sappiamo? Che intendi tu, che non sia appo noi?
10 One of us is an old, grey-headed man loaded with more years than your father!	10 Fra noi vi è eziandio alcun canuto, alcun molto vecchio, Più attempato che tuo padre.
11 Can you ignore these divine consolations and the moderate tone of our words?	11 Son le consolazioni di Dio troppo poca cosa per te? Hai tu alcuna cosa riposta appo te?
12 How passion carries you away! And how you rol your eyes,	12 Perchè ti trasporta il cuor tuo? E perchè ammiccano gli occhi tuoi,
13 when you vent your anger on God and speeches come tripping off your tongue!	13 Che tu rivolga il tuo soffio, E proferisca della tua bocca parole contro a Dio?
14 How can anyone be pure, anyone born of woman be upright?	14 Che cosa è l’uomo, ch’egli sia puro? E che cosa è chi è nato di donna, ch’egli sia giusto?
15 God cannot rely even on his holy ones, to him, even the heavens seem impure.	15 Ecco, egli non si fida ne’ suoi santi, Ed i cieli non son puri nel suo cospetto;
16 How much more, this hateful, corrupt thing, humanity, which soaks up wickedness like water!	16 Quanto più abbominevole e puzzolente È l’uomo, che beve l’iniquità come acqua?
17 Listen to me, I have a lesson for you: I am going to impart my own experience	17 Io ti dichiarerò, ascoltami pure, E ti racconterò ciò che io ho veduto;
18 and the tradition of the sages who have remained faithful to their ancestors,	18 Il che i savi hanno narrato, E non l’hanno celato, avendolo ricevuto da’ padri loro;
19 to whom alone the land was given -- no foreigner included among them.	19 A’ quali soli la terra fu data, E per mezzo i cui paesi non passò mai straniero.
20 The life of the wicked is unceasing torment, the years al otted to the tyrant are numbered.	20 L’empio è tormentato tutti i giorni della sua vita; Ed al violento è riposto un piccol numero d’anni.
21 A cry of panic echoes in his ear; when al is peace, his destroyer swoops down on him.	21 Egli ha negli orecchi un romor di spaventi; In tempo di pace il guastatore gli sopraggiunge.
22 No more can he count on escaping from the dark, but knows that he is destined for the sword,	22 Egli non si fida punto di potere uscir delle tenebre; Egli sta sempre in guato, aspettando la spada.
23 marked down as meat for the vulture. He knows that his ruin is at hand.	23 Egli va tapinando per cercar dove sia del pane; Egli sa che ha in mano tutto presto il giorno delle tenebre.
24 The hour of darkness terrifies him, distress and anguish assail him as when a king is poised for theassault.	24 Angoscia e tribolazione lo spaventano; Lo sopraffanno come un re apparecchiato alla battaglia.
25 He raised his hand against God, boldly he defied Shaddai!	25 Perciocchè egli ha distesa la sua mano contro a Dio, E si è rinforzato contro all’Onnipotente;
26 Head lowered, he charged him, with his massively bossed shield.	26 E gli è corso col collo fermo, Co’ suoi spessi e rilevati scudi;
27 His face had grown ful and fat, and his thighs too heavy with flesh.	27 Perciocchè egli ha coperto il suo viso di grasso, Ed ha fatte delle pieghe sopra i suoi fianchi;
28 He had occupied the towns he had destroyed, with their uninhabited houses about to fal into ruins;	28 Ed è abitato in città desolate, in case disabitate, Ch’erano preste ad esser ridotte in monti di ruine.
29 but no great profit to him, his luck will not hold, he wil cast his shadow over the country no longer,	29 Egli non arricchirà, e le sue facoltà non saranno stabili, E il suo colmo non si spanderà nella terra.
30 (he wil not escape the dark). A flame wil scorch his young shoots, the wind will carry off his blossom.	30 Egli non si dipartirà giammai dalle tenebre, La fiamma seccherà i suoi rampolli, Ed egli sarà portato via dal soffio della bocca di Dio.
31 Let him not trust in his great height or delusion will be his.	31 Non confidisi già nella vanità, dalla quale è sedotto; Perciocchè egli muterà stato, e sarà ridotto al niente.
32 His palm trees wil wither before their time and his branches never again be green.	32 Questo mutamento si compierà fuor del suo tempo, E i suoi rami non verdeggeranno.
33 Like the vine, he wil shake off his unripe fruit, like the olive tree, shed his blossom.	33 Il suo agresto sarà rapito come quel d’una vigna, E le sue gemme saranno sbattute come quelle di un ulivo.
34 Yes, sterile is the spawn of the sinner, and fire consumes the tents of the venal.	34 Perciocchè la raunanza de’ profani sarà deserta, E il fuoco divorerà i tabernacoli di quelli che prendon presenti;
35 Whoever conceives malice, breeds disaster, bears as offspring only a false hope.	35 I quali concepiscono perversità, e partoriscono iniquità, E il cui ventre macchina fraude
