1 a human being, born of woman, whose life is short but ful of trouble.	1 - L'uomo generato da donna, breve tempo vive, di molte miserie è ripieno:
2 Like a flower, such a one blossoms and withers, fleeting as a shadow, transient.	2 qual fiore egli spunta e si spezza, sfugge qual'ombra e mai non resta in uno stesso stato.
3 And this is the creature on whom you fix your gaze, and bring to judgement before you!	3 E tu ti degni d'aprir gli occhi tuoi sopra tale essere, e condurlo a giudizio con te?
4 But will anyone produce the pure from what is impure? No one can!	4 Chi potrà rendere mondo chi fu concepito da seme immondo? Non tu forse, che sei solo?
5 Since his days are measured out, since his tale of months depends on you, since you assign himbounds he cannot pass,	5 Brevi sono i dì dell'uomo, il numero dei mesi suoi è presso di te:gli ponesti dei termini che non si potranno oltrepassare.
6 turn your eyes from him, leave him alone, like a hired labourer, to finish his day in peace.	6 Allontanati alquanto da lui, sì ch'ei si riposi, fino a che giunga bramata come d'un mercenario, la sua giornata.
7 There is always hope for a tree: when fel ed, it can start its life again; its shoots continue to sprout.	7 V'è per l'albero una speranza: qualor venga reciso, ancor rinverdisce, e i suoi rami germogliano;
8 Its roots may have grown old in the earth, its stump rotting in the ground,	8 se invecchi nel terreno la sua radice, e nella polvere perisca il suo ceppo,
9 but let it scent the water, and it buds, and puts out branches like a plant newly set.	9 ad un vapor d'acqua rigèrmina, e getta la chioma come quando fu piantato in principio.
10 But a human being? He dies, and dead he remains, breathes his last, and then where is he?	10 Ma l'uomo quando sia morto, e spogliato e consunto - ov'è mai egli?
11 The waters of the sea wil vanish, the rivers stop flowing and run dry:	11 Come se si partissero le acque del mare, e il fiume si vuotasse e inaridisse,
12 a human being, once laid to rest, will never rise again, the heavens wil wear out before he wakes up,or before he is roused from his sleep.	12 così l'uomo, poi che giacque, non sorgerà: finchè non s'infranga il cielo, egli non si sveglierà, nè si leverà su dal suo sonno.
13 Will no one hide me in Sheol, and shelter me there til your anger is past, fixing a certain day forcal ing me to mind-	13 Oh! se tu negl'inferi mi nascondessi, mi occultassi fino al passar dell'ira tua, e mi stabilissi un tempo in cui ti ricordassi di me!
14 can the dead come back to life? - day after day of my service, I should be waiting for my relief tocome.	14 Che forse un uomo morto potrà rivivere? In tutti i dì della mia milizia aspettofino a che venga la mia muta [di guardia].
15 Then you would cal , and I should answer, you would want to see once more what you have made.	15 Tu mi chiamerai ed io ti risponderò, all'opera delle tue mani stenderai la mano.
16 Whereas now you count every step I take, you would then stop spying on my sin;	16 Bensì tu hai contato i miei passi; ma perdona ai miei peccati!
17 you would seal up my crime in a bag, and put a cover over my fault.	17 Sigillasti come in una borsa i miei delitti; ma avesti cura della mia iniquità.
18 Alas! Just as, eventual y, the mountain fal s down, the rock moves from its place,	18 Il monte cadendo frantumasi, e la rupe si sposta dal suo luogo.
19 water wears away the stones, the cloudburst erodes the soil; so you destroy whatever hope a personhas.	19 Le acque corrodono i macigni, e dall'alluvione a poco a poco la terra è consumata: così pure tu distruggerai l'uomo.
20 You crush him once for al , and he is gone; first you disfigure him, then you dismiss him.	20 Per poco gli desti vigore, affinchè passasse via per sempre, sfigurerai il suo volto e lo scaccerai via.
21 His children may rise to honours -- he does not know it; they may come down in the world -- he doesnot care.	21 Che i suoi figli siano onorati, ovvero inonorati - egli l'ignora;
22 He feels no pangs, except for his own body, makes no lament, except for his own self.	22 ma, mentre vive, la sua carne fa doglia, e l'anima sua addosso a lui fa lutto.»
