Job 1

1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 C'era nel paese di Us un uomo chiamato Giobbe, un uomo semplice e retto, timorato di Dio e alieno dal male.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 Gli eran nati sette figli e tre figlie;
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 possedeva sette mila pecore, tre mila cammelli, cinquecento paia di buoi, cinquecento asine e gran numero di servi. Quest'uomo era grande fra tutti gli Orientali.
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 I figli di lui solevano andare a imbandire un convito nelle loro case, ciascuno nel suo giorno, e chiamavano le loro tre sorelle a mangiare e bere con essi.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 Terminato il giro dei giorni di convito, Giobbe li mandava a chiamare, li purificava, e, alzatosi di buon mattino, offriva olocausti per ciascuno di essi, perchè diceva: « Può darsi che i miei figli abbiano peccato, e non abbiano benedetto Dio nei loro cuori ». Così faceva Giobbe tutti i giorni.
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 Or un dato giorno, venuti i figli di Dio a presentarsi al Signore, vi andò fra loro anche Satana.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 E il Signore gli disse: « Donde vieni? » Quello rispose: « Ho fatto il giro della terra e l'ho scorsa ».
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 E il Signore a lui: « Hai notato il mio servo Giobbe, e come non vi sia sulla terra chi gli somigli, uomo semplice e retto, timorato di Dio e alieno dal male? »
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 Satana gli rispose: « Forse per niente Giobbe teme Dio?
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 Non hai tu circondato di difese lui, la sua casa e tutti i suoi beni? Non hai benedette le opere delle sue mani? Non si sono moltiplicati i suoi beni sopra la terra?
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Ma stendi un po' la tua mano a toccare tutto ciò che possiede, e vedrai se non ti maledice in faccia ».
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 Il Signore disse allora a Satana: « Ecco ogni suo bene è in tua balia, però risparmia la sua persona ». E Satana partì dalla presenza del Signore.
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 Or mentre un giorno i figli e le figlie di Giobbe stavano a mangiare e a bere in casa del loro fratello maggiore,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 giunse a Giobbe un messo a dirgli: « I buoi stavano ad arare e le asine pascolavano loro accanto,
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 quando i Sabei, piombati all'improvviso, han portato via tutto, passando a fil di spada i servi: io solo son potuto scampare per venire a dirtelo ».
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 Quello parlava ancora, quando ne venne un altro e disse: « Il fuoco di Dio è caduto dal cielo, ha colpito le pecore e i servi e li ha divorati: io solo son potuto scampare e venire a dirtelo ».
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 Quello parlava ancora, quando ne venne un altro e disse: « I Caldei, fatte tre bande, si son gettati sui cammelli e li han rapiti, passando a fil di spada i servi: io solo son potuto scampare per venire a dirtelo ».
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Quello parlava ancora ed ecco venirne un altro e dire: « Mentre i tuoi figli e le tue figlie stavano a mangiare e bere in casa del loro fratello maggiore,
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 d'un tratto s'è levato dalla parte del deserto un gran vento ed ha investiti i quattro angoli della casa, la quale, cadendo, ha schiacciati i tuoi figlioli, che son morti: io solo son potuto scampare, per venire a dirtelo ».
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Allora Giobbe si alzo, e, stracciatesi le vesti e tosatosi il capo, si gettò per terra
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 ed esclamò, adorando: « Nudo sono uscito dal seno di mia madre, e nudo vi tornerò. Il Signore ha dato, il Signore ha tolto: sia benedetto il nome del Signore! »
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 In tutto questo, Giobbe non peccò colle labbra e non disse nulla d'insensato contro il Signore.
