Job 1

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 Havia, na terra de Hus, um homem chamado Jó, íntegro, reto, que temia a Deus e fugia do mal.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 Nasceram-lhe sete filhos e três filhas.
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 Possuía sete mil ovelhas, três mil camelos, quinhentas juntas de bois, quinhentas jumentas e uma grande quantidade de escravos. Este homem era o mais considerado entre todos os homens do Oriente.
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 Seus filhos tinham o costume de ir à casa uns dos outros, alternadamente, para se banquetearem e convidavam suas três irmãs para comerem e beberem com eles.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 Quando acabava a série dos dias de banquetes, Jó mandava chamar seus filhos para purificá-los e, na manhã do dia seguinte, oferecia um holocausto por intenção de cada um deles: porque, dizia ele, talvez meus filhos tenham pecado e amaldiçoado Deus nos seus corações. Assim fazia Jó cada vez.
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 Um dia em que os filhos de Deus se apresentaram diante do Senhor, veio também Satanás entre eles.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 O Senhor disse-lhe: De onde vens tu? Andei dando volta pelo mundo, disse Satanás, e passeando por ele.
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 O Senhor disse-lhe: Notaste o meu servo Jó? Não há ninguém igual a ele na terra: íntegro, reto, temente a Deus, afastado do mal.
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 Mas Satanás respondeu ao Senhor: É a troco de nada que Jó teme a Deus?
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 Não cercaste como de uma muralha a sua pessoa, a sua casa e todos os seus bens? Abençoas tudo quanto ele faz e seus rebanhos cobrem toda a região.
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Mas estende a tua mão e toca em tudo o que ele possui; juro-te que te amaldiçoará na tua face.
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 Pois bem!, respondeu o Senhor. Tudo o que ele tem está em teu poder; mas não estendas a tua mão contra a sua pessoa. E Satanás saiu da presença do Senhor.
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 Ora, um dia em que os filhos e filhas de Jó estavam à mesa e bebiam vinho em casa do seu irmão mais velho,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 um mensageiro veio dizer a Jó: Os bois lavravam e as jumentas pastavam perto deles.
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 De repente, apareceram os sabeus e levaram tudo; e passaram à espada os escravos. Só eu consegui escapar para te trazer a notícia.
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 Estando ele ainda a falar, veio outro e disse: O fogo de Deus caiu do céu; queimou, consumiu as ovelhas e os escravos. Só eu consegui escapar para te trazer a notícia.
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 Ainda este falava, e eis que chegou outro e disse: Os caldeus, divididos em três bandos, lançaram-se sobre os camelos e os levaram. Passaram a fio de espada os escravos. Só eu consegui escapar para te trazer a notícia!
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Ainda este estava falando e eis que entrou outro, e disse: Teus filhos e filhas estavam comendo e bebendo vinho em casa do irmão mais velho,
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 quando um furacão se levantou de repente do deserto, abalou os quatro cantos da casa e esta desabou sobre os jovens. Morreram todos. Só eu consegui escapar para te trazer a notícia.
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Jó então se levantou, rasgou o manto e rapou a cabeça. Depois, caindo prosternado por terra,
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 disse: Nu saí do ventre de minha mãe, nu voltarei. O Senhor deu, o Senhor tirou: bendito seja o nome do Senhor!
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 Em tudo isso, Jó não cometeu pecado algum, nem proferiu contra Deus blasfêmia alguma.
