NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.1 Vir erat in terra Us nomine Iob, et erat vir ille simplex et rectus actimens Deum et recedens a malo.
Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.2 Natique sunt ei septem filii et tres filiae.
And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.3 Et fuit possessio eius septem milia ovium et tria milia camelorum, quingentaquoque iuga boum et quingentae asinae ac familia multa nimis; eratque vir illemagnus inter omnes Orientales.
It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.4 Et ibant filii eius et faciebant convivium per domos unusquisque in die suo;et mittentes vocabant tres sorores suas, ut comederent et biberent cum eis.
Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.5 Cumque in orbem transissent dies convivii, mittebat ad eos Iob et sanctificabatillos; consurgensque diluculo offerebat holocausta pro singulis. Dicebat enim:“ Ne forte peccaverint filii mei et benedixerint Deo in cordibus suis ”. Sicfaciebat Iob cunctis diebus.
One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.6 Quadam autem die, cum venissent filii Dei, ut assisterent coram Domino, affuitinter eos etiam Satan.
So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'7 Cui dixit Dominus: “ Unde venis? ”. Qui respondensait: “ Circuivi terram et perambulavi eam ”.
So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'8 Dixitque Dominus ad eum: “Numquid considerasti servum meum Iob, quod non sit ei similis in terra, homosimplex et rectus ac timens Deum et recedens a malo? ”.
'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?9 Cui respondens Satan ait: “ Numquid Iob frustra timet Deum?
Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.10 Nonne tuvallasti eum ac domum eius universamque substantiam per circuitum, operibusmanuum eius benedixisti, et possessio eius crevit in terra?
But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'11 Sed extendepaululum manum tuam et tange cuncta, quae possidet, nisi in faciem benedixerittibi ”.
'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.12 Dixit ergo Dominus ad Satan: “ Ecce, universa, quae habet, inmanu tua sunt; tantum in eum ne extendas manum tuam ”. Egressusque est Satan afacie Domini.
On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,13 Cum autem quadam die filii et filiae eius comederent et biberent vinum indomo fratris sui primogeniti,
a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,14 nuntius venit ad Iob, qui diceret: “ Bovesarabant, et asinae pascebantur iuxta eos;
when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'15 et irruerunt Sabaei tuleruntque eoset pueros percusserunt gladio, et evasi ego solus, ut nuntiarem tibi ”.
He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'16 Cumque adhuc ille loqueretur, venit alter et dixit: “ Ignis Dei cecidit ecaelo et ussit oves puerosque consumpsit, et effugi ego solus, ut nuntiarem tibi”.
He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'17 Sed et illo adhuc loquente, venit alius et dixit: “ Chaldaei fecerunttres turmas et invaserunt camelos et tulerunt eos necnon et pueros percusseruntgladio, et ego fugi solus, ut nuntiarem tibi ”.
He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,18 Adhuc loquebatur ille, et ecce alius intravit et dixit: “ Filiis tuis etfiliabus vescentibus et bibentibus vinum in domo fratris sui primogeniti,
when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'19 repente ventus vehemens irruit a regione deserti et concussit quattuor angulosdomus; quae corruens oppressit liberos tuos, et mortui sunt, et effugi egosolus, ut nuntiarem tibi ”.
Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself20 Tunc surrexit Iob et scidit vestimenta sua et, tonso capite, corruens interram adoravit
and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!21 et dixit:
“ Nudus egressus sum de utero matris meae
et nudus revertar illuc.
Dominus dedit, Dominus abstulit; sicut Domino placuit, ita factum est:
sit nomen Domini benedictum ”.
In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.22 In omnibus his non peccavit Iob labiis suis neque stultum quid contra Deumlocutus est.
