1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 Il y avait au pays d’Ous un homme du nom de Job. C’était un homme intègre et droit, il craignait Dieu et évitait le mal.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 Il avait sept fils et trois filles,
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 il possédait 7 000 moutons, 3 000 chameaux, 500 paires de bœufs, 500 ânesses, et de très nombreux serviteurs. Cet homme était le plus important parmi les fils de l’Orient.
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 Ses fils allaient régulièrement festoyer les uns chez les autres, à tour de rôle, et ils invitaient leurs trois sœurs à manger et à boire avec eux.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 Dès que la série des fêtes était achevée, Job les faisait venir auprès de lui pour une cérémonie de pardon: il se levait de grand matin et offrait pour chacun d’eux un sacrifice pour l’expiation des péchés. En effet, Job se disait en lui-même: "Qui sait? Peut-être mes fils ont-ils maudit Dieu dans leur cœur!” Et c’est ainsi que Job faisait invariablement.
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 Un certain jour, comme les Fils de Dieu étaient venus se présenter devant Yahvé, le Satan vint avec eux.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 Yahvé dit à Satan: "D’où viens-tu?” Il répondit: "Je viens de parcourir la terre, je suis passé un peu partout.”
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 Et Yahvé reprit: "As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job? Il n’a pas son pareil sur la terre: c’est un homme intègre et droit, il craint Dieu et évite le mal.”
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 Mais Satan répondit à Yahvé: "Si Job te craint, le fait-il sans intérêt?
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 N’as-tu pas élevé une clôture autour de lui, de sa famille et de ses biens? Tu as béni ses entreprises et ses troupeaux couvrent tout le pays.
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Mais peut-être pourrais-tu étendre la main et frapper là où sont ses biens. Alors sûrement il te maudirait en face.”
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 Yahvé dit à Satan: "Soit! Je te livre tous ses biens, mais tu ne toucheras pas à lui.” Et Satan se retira de devant Yahvé.
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 Un jour que les fils et les filles de Job étaient en train de manger et de boire du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 un messager accourut auprès de Job et lui dit: "Tes bœufs étaient en train de labourer et les ânesses étaient au pâturage à côté d’eux,
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 quand les Sabéens se sont jetés dessus et les ont enlevés après avoir massacré tes serviteurs. Moi seul j’ai été épargné, et je viens te l’annoncer.”
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 Il parlait encore quand un autre survint et dit: "Le feu du ciel est tombé: il a frappé tes brebis et tes serviteurs, et il les a brûlés. Moi seul j’ai été épargné, et je viens te l’annoncer!”
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 Il parlait encore quand un autre survint et dit: "Les Kaldéens sont venus de trois côtés différents; ils ont enlevé tes chameaux et sont partis avec après avoir massacré tes serviteurs! Moi seul j’ai été épargné, et je viens te l’annoncer.”
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Il parlait encore quand un autre survint et dit: "Tes fils et tes filles étaient en train de manger et de boire du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné,
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 quand un vent de tempête a soufflé du désert et enfoncé les quatre coins de la maison; elle s’est écroulée sur les jeunes qui sont tous morts! Moi seul j’ai été épargné, et je viens te l’annoncer.”
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Alors Job se leva, déchira son manteau et se rasa la tête. Puis il se laissa tomber sur le sol et se prosterna.
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 Il disait: "Nu je suis sorti du ventre de ma mère, nu aussi j’y retournerai. Yahvé a donné, Yahvé a repris; que le nom de Yahvé soit béni!”
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 Dans tous cela Job ne pécha pas; il ne dit rien de mal contre Dieu.
