1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 Era un nomo nella terra di Hus per nome Giobbe, e quest'uomo era semplice, e retto, e timorato di Dio, e alieno dal mal fare.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 Ed egli ebbe sette figliuoli, e tre figliuole.
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 E possedeva sette mila pecore, e tre mila cammelli, e cinquecento paia di bovi, e cinquecento asine, e gran numero di servi: e quest'uomo era grande tragli Orientali.
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 E i suoi figliuoli andavan facendo de' conviti nelle case loro, ciascuno nel suo giorno, e mandavano a invitare le tre loro sorelle a mangiare, e bere con essi.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 E quando era finito il giro dei giorni di convito Giobbe mandava a chiamarli, e li purificava, e alzatosi innanzi giorno offeriva olocausti per ciascuno di essi: perocché diceva: Chi sa, che i miei figliuoli non abbian fatto del male, e non abbiano disgustato Dio ne' loro cuori? Così faceva Giobbe ogni giorno.
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 Or un dato giorno essendo venuti i figliuoli di Dio per istar davanti al Signore, vi si trovò con essi, anche Satan.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 E il Signore disse a lui: Donde vieni? E quegli rispose: Ho fatto il giro della terra, e la ho scorsa.
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 E il Signore gli disse: Hai tu posto mente al mio servo Giobbe, com' ei non ha sulla terra chi lo somigli, uomo semplice, e retto, e timorato di Dio, e alieno dal far male?
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 Ma Satan gli rispose: Forse che Giobbe teme Dio inutilmente?
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 Non hai tu messo in sicuro lui, e la sua casa, e tutti i suoi beni all'intorno? Hai benedette le fatiche delle sue mani, e i suoi beni si sono moltiplicati sulla terra.
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Ma stendi un po' la tua mano, e tocca tutto quel ch'ei possiede, e vedrai s'ei non dirà male di te in faccia.
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 Il Signore adunque disse a Satan: Su via. tutto quel ch'ei possiede, è in tua balia: solamente non stendere la tua mano contro la sua persona. E Satan partì dalla presenza del Signore.
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 Or mentre un giorno i figliuoli di lui, e le figliuole mangiavano, e beveano del vino in casa del fratello loro primo genito,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 Venne un messo a Giobbe per dirgli: I buoi aravano, e le asine pascevano vicino a quelli,
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 I Sabei hanno fatta una scorreria, e han portato via ogni cosa, e hanno uccisi di spada i servi, e io solo ho avuto scampo per recarti questa nuova.
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 E prima che questi avesse finito di dire, venne un altro, e disse: Un fuoco grande è caduto dal cielo, e ha percosse, e consunte le pecore, e i servi e mi son salvato io solo per recarti tal nuova.
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 E mentre anche questi parlava, sopraggiunse un altro, e disse: I Caldei divisi in tre squadre hanno predati, e menati via i cammelli, e uccisi i servi a mano armata, e son fuggito io solo per recarti questa nuova.
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Questi non finì di dire, cne venne un altro, e disse: Mentre i tuoi figliuoli, e le figliuole mangiavano, e beveano il vino in casa del loro fratello primogenito,
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 Si è levato ad un tratto un vento impetuoso dalla parte del deserto, e ha scossi i quattro angoli della casa, e questa è caduta, ed ha oppressi i tuoi figliuoli, e sono morti, e sol'io sono scappato per recarti tal nuova.
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Allora Giobbe si alzò, e stracciò le sue vesti, e tosatosi il capo si prostrò per terra, e adorò Dio,
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 E disse: Ignudo uscii dal seno di mia madre, e ignudo tornerò laggiù. Il Signore avea dato, il Signore ha ritolto; è stato quello, che è piaciuto al Signore: il nome del Signore sia benedetto.
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 A tutte queste cose Giobbe non peccò colle sue labbra, e non disse parola men sana contro il Signore.
