NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 V’ERA nel paese di Us, un uomo, il cui nome era Giobbe; e quell’uomo era intiero e diritto, e temeva Iddio, e si ritraeva dal male.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 E gli erano nati sette figliuoli, e tre figliuole.
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 E il suo bestiame era di settemila pecore, e di tremila cammelli, e di cinquecento paia di buoi, e di cinquecento asine, con una molto gran famiglia. E quell’uomo era il più grande di tutti gli orientali
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 Or i suoi figliuoli andavano, e facevano conviti in casa di ciascun di loro, al suo giorno; e mandavano a chiamare le lor tre sorelle, per mangiare, e per bere con loro.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 E quando aveano compiuta la volta de’ giorni del convito, Giobbe mandava a santificarli; poi si levava la mattina, ed offeriva olocausti, secondo il numero di essi tutti; perciocchè Giobbe diceva: I miei figliuoli avranno forse peccato, ed avranno parlato male di Dio nei cuori loro. Così faceva sempre Giobbe
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 Or avvenne un dì, che i figliuoli di Dio vennero a presentarsi dinanzi al Signore; e Satana venne anch’egli per mezzo loro.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 E il Signore disse a Satana: Onde vieni? E Satana rispose al Signore, e disse: Da aggirar la terra, e da passeggiar per essa.
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 E il Signore disse a Satana: Hai tu posto mente al mio servitore Giobbe? come nella terra non vi è uomo intiero e diritto, e che tema Iddio, e si ritragga dal male, come esso?
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 E Satana rispose al Signore, e disse: Giobbe teme egli Iddio indarno?
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 Non hai tu intorniato, come di un riparo, lui, e la casa sua, ed ogni cosa sua? Tu hai benedetta l’opera delle sue mani, e il suo bestiame è sommamente moltiplicato nella terra.
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Ma stendi pur ora la tua mano, e tocca tutte le cose sue, e vedrai se non ti maledice in faccia.
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 E il Signore disse a Satana: Ecco, tutto quello ch’egli ha è in mano tua; sol non metter la mano sopra lui. E Satana si partì dal cospetto del Signore
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 Ed avvenne un dì, mentre i figliuoli e le figliuole di Giobbe mangiavano, e bevevano del vino in casa del lor fratel maggiore,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 che un messo venne a Giobbe, e gli disse: I buoi aravano, e le asine pasturavano allato ad essi;
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 ed i Sabei sono scorsi, e li hanno rapiti, ed hanno messi a fil di spada i servitori; ed io tutto solo sono scampato per rapportartelo.
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 Mentre costui parlava ancora, ne venne un altro, che disse: Il fuoco di Dio è caduto dal cielo, e si è appreso al minuto bestiame, ed a’ servitori, e li ha consumati; ed io tutto solvo sono scampato per rapportartelo.
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 Mentre costui parlava ancora, ne venne un altro, che disse: De’ Caldei, in tre schiere, sono scorsi sopra i cammelli, e li hanno rapiti, ed hanno messi a fil di spada i servitori; ed io tutto solo sono scampato per rapportartelo.
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Mentre costui parlava, ne venne un altro, che disse: I tuoi figliuoli e le tue figliuole mangiavano e bevevano del vino in casa del lor fratel maggiore;
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 ed ecco, un gran vento è venuto di là dal deserto, il quale ha dato ne’ quattro canti della casa, ed ella è caduta sopra i giovani, onde son morti; ed io tutto solo sono scampato per rapportartelo
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Allora Giobbe si levò, e stracciò il suo mantello, e si tondè il capo, e si gittò a terra, e adorò.
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 E disse: Io sono uscito ignudo del seno di mia madre, ignudo altresì ritornerò là. Il Signore ha dato, il Signore ha tolto; sia benedetto il Nome del Signore.
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 In tutto ciò Giobbe non peccò, e non attribuì a Dio nulla di mal fatto
