Job 1

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 Había en el país de Us un hombre llamado, Job. Este hombre era íntegro y recto, temeroso de Dios y alejado del mal.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 Le habían nacido siete hijos y tres hijas,
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 y poseía una hacienda de siete mil ovejas, y tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes y quinientas asnas, además de una servidumbre muy numerosa. Este hombre era el más rico entre todos los Orientales.
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 Sus hijos tenían la costumbre de ofrecer por turno un banquete, cada uno en su propia casa, e invitaban a sus tres hermanas a comer y a beber con ellos.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 Una vez concluido el ciclo de los festejos, Job los hacía venir y los purificaba; después se levantaba muy de madrugada y ofrecía un holocausto por cada uno de ellos. Porque pensaba: «Tal vez mis hijos hayan pecado y maldecido a Dios en su corazón». Así procedía Job indefectiblemente.
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 El día en que los hijos de Dios fueron a presentarse delante del Señor, también el Adversario estaba en medio de ellos.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 El Señor le dijo: «¿De dónde vienes?». El Adversario respondió al Señor: «De rondar por la tierra, yendo de aquí para allá».
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 Entonces el Señor le dijo: «¿Te has fijado en mi servidor Job? No hay nadie como él sobre la tierra: es un hombre íntegro y recto, temeroso de Dios y alejado del mal».
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 Pero el Adversario le respondió: «¡No por nada teme Job al Señor!
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 ¿Acaso tú no has puesto un cerco protector alrededor de él, de su casa y de todo lo que posee? Tú has bendecido la obra de sus manos y su hacienda se ha esparcido por todo el país.
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Pero extiende tu mano y tócalo en lo que posee: ¡seguro que te maldecirá en la cara!».
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 El Señor dijo al Adversario: «Está bien. Todo lo que le pertenece está en tu poder, pero no pongas tu mano sobre él». Y el Adversario se alejó de la presencia del Señor.
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 El día en que sus hijos e hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo en la casa del hermano mayor,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 llegó un mensajero y dijo a Job: «Los bueyes estaban arando y las asnas pastaban cerca de ellos,
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 cuando de pronto irrumpieron los sabeos y se los llevaron, pasando a los servidores al filo de la espada. Yo solo pude escapar para traerte la noticia».
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 Todavía estaba hablando, cuando llegó otro y le dijo: «Cayó del cielo fuego de Dios, e hizo arder a las ovejas y a los servidores hasta consumirlos. Yo solo pude escapar para traerte la noticia».
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 Todavía estaba hablando, cuando llegó otro y le dijo: «Los caldeos, divididos en tres grupos, se lanzaron sobre los camellos y se los llevaron, pasando a los servidores al filo de la espada. Yo solo pude escapar para traerte la noticia».
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Todavía estaba hablando, cuando llegó otro y le dijo: «Tus hijos y tus hijas comían y bebían en la casa de su hermano mayor,
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 y de pronto sopló un fuerte viento del lado del desierto, que sacudió los cuatro ángulos de la casa. Esta se desplomó sobre los jóvenes, y ellos murieron. Yo solo pude escapar para traerte la noticia».
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Entonces Job se levantó y rasgó su manto; se rapó la cabeza, se postró con el rostro en tierra
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 y exclamó: «Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre, y desnudo volveré allí. El Señor me lo dio y el Señor me lo quitó: ¡bendito sea el nombre del Señor!».
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 En todo esto, Job no pecó ni dijo nada indigno contra Dios.
