Job 1

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 Había una vez en el país de Us un hombre llamado Job: hombre cabal, recto, que temía a Dios y se apartaba del mal.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 Le habían nacido siete hijos y tres hijas.
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 Tenía también 7.000 ovejas, 3.000 camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes, quinientas asnas y una servidumbre muy numerosa. Este hombre era, pues, el más grande de todos los hijos de Oriente.
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 Solían sus hijos celebrar banquetes en casa de cada uno de ellos, por turno, e invitaban también a sus tres hermanas a comer y beber con ellos.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 Al terminar los días de estos convites, Job les mandaba a llamar para purificarlos; luego se levantaba de madrugada y ofrecía holocaustos por cada uno de ellos. Porque se decía: «Acaso mis hijos hayan pecado y maldecido a Dios en su corazón.» Así hacía Job siempre.
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 El día que los Hijos de Dios venían a presentarse ante Yahveh, vino también entre ellos el Satán.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 Yahveh dijo al Satán: «¿De dónde vienes?» El Satán respondió a Yahveh: «De recorrer la tierra y pasearme por ella.»
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 Y Yahveh dijo al Satán: «¿No te has fijado en mi siervo Job? ¡No hay nadie como él en la tierra; es un hombre cabal, recto, que teme a Dios y se aparta del mal!»
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 Respondió el Satán a Yahveh: «Es que Job teme a Dios de balde?
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 ¿No has levantado tú una valla en torno a él, a su casa y a todas sus posesiones? Has bendecido la obra de sus manos y sus rebaños hormiguean por el país.
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Pero extiende tu mano y toca todos sus bienes; ¡verás si no te maldice a la cara!»
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 Dijo Yahveh al Satán: «Ahí tienes todos sus bienes en tus manos. Cuida sólo de no poner tu mano en él.» Y el Satán salió de la presencia de Yahveh.
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 El día en que sus hijos y sus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en casa del hermano mayor,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 vino un mensajero donde Job y le dijo: «Tus bueyes estaban arando y las asnas pastando cerca de ellos;
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 de pronto irrumpieron los sabeos y se los llevaron, y a los criados los pasaron a cuchillo. Sólo yo pude escapar para traerte la noticia.»
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 Todavía estaba éste hablando, cuando llegó otro que dijo: «Cayó del cielo el fuego de Dios, que quemó las ovejas y pastores hasta consumirlos. Sólo yo pude escapar para traerte la noticia.»
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 Aún estaba hablando éste, cuando llegó otro que dijo: «Los caldeos, divididos en tres cuadrillas, se lanzaron sobre los camellos, se los llevaron, y a los criados los pasaron a cuchillo. Sólo yo pude escapar para traerte la noticia.»
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Todavía estaba éste hablando, cuando llegó otro que dijo: «Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo en casa del hermano mayor.
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 De pronto sopló un fuerte viento del lado del desierto y sacudió las cuatro esquinas de la casa; y ésta se desplomó sobre los jóvenes, que perecieron. Sólo yo pude escapar para traerte la noticia.»
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Entonces Job se levantó, rasgó su manto, se rapó la cabeza, y postrado en tierra,
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 dijo: «Desnudo salí del seno de mi madre, desnudo allá retornaré. Yahveh dio, Yahveh quitó: ¡Sea bendito el nombre de Yahveh!»
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 En todo esto no pecó Job, ni profirió la menor insensatez contra Dios.
