Job 1

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 C'era nella regione di Uz un uomo chiamato Giobbe. Quest'uomo era integro e retto, timorato di Dio e alieno dal male.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 Gli erano nati sette figli e tre figlie.
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 Possedeva settemila pecore, tremila cammelli, cinquecento coppie di buoi, cinquecento asine e una numerosissima servitù. Quest'uomo era il più ricco fra tutti gli orientali.
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 Ora, i suoi figli solevano celebrare dei banchetti a turno in casa di uno e dell'altro e mandavano a invitare le loro tre sorelle per banchettare insieme.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 Terminato il ciclo dei conviti, Giobbe li faceva venire per purificarli; si alzava di buon mattino e offriva un olocausto per ognuno di essi, perché diceva: "Forse i miei figli hanno peccato oltraggiando Dio nel loro cuore". Giobbe soleva fare così immancabilmente.
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 Però un giorno i figli di Dio andarono a presentarsi davanti al Signore e tra di essi venne anche satana.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 Il Signore disse a satana: "Da dove vieni?". Satana rispose al Signore: "Dal vagabondare sulla terra dopo averla girata".
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 E il Signore a satana: "Hai fatto attenzione al mio servo Giobbe? Sulla terra non c'è un altro come lui: uomo integro e retto, timorato di Dio e alieno dal male".
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 Satana rispose al Signore: "Forse che Giobbe teme Dio per niente?
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 Non hai forse protetto con uno steccato lui, la sua casa e tutto ciò che possiede? Tu hai benedetto le sue imprese e i suoi greggi si dilatano nella regione.
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Ma stendi la tua mano e colpisci i suoi beni e vedrai come ti maledirà in faccia!".
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 Il Signore disse a satana: "Ecco, tutto ciò che è suo, è in tuo potere; però non portare la tua mano sulla sua persona". E satana si ritirò dalla presenza del Signore.
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 Or avvenne che il giorno in cui i suoi figli e le sue figlie mangiavano e bevevano in casa del loro fratello maggiore,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 giunse un messaggero da Giobbe e disse: "Mentre i buoi stavano arando e le asine erano al pascolo nelle vicinanze,
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 irruppero i Sabei, li depredarono e passarono a fil di spada i guardiani. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 Mentre costui stava ancora parlando, giunse un altro a dire: "Il fuoco di Dio è caduto dal cielo, bruciò le pecore e i guardiani incenerendoli. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 Mentre costui stava ancora parlando, giunse un altro a dire: "I Caldei, divisi in tre gruppi, si precipitarono sui cammelli, li presero e passarono a fil di spada i guardiani. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Mentre costui stava ancora parlando, giunse un altro a dire: "I tuoi figli e le tue figlie stavano ancora mangiando e bevendo vino nella casa del loro fratello maggiore,
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 quando un vento impetuoso venendo da oltre il deserto investì i quattro angoli della casa; questa cadde sui giovani, che sono morti. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Allora Giobbe, alzatosi, si strappò il manto, si rase il capo e, caduto a terra, prostrato
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 disse: "Nudo sono uscito dal ventre di mia madre e nudo vi farò ritorno! Il Signore ha dato e il Signore ha tolto; sia benedetto il nome del Signore".
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 In tutto ciò Giobbe non commise peccato né proferì alcuna insolenza contro Dio.
