Job 1

1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 - V'era un uomo nella terra di Hus, di nome Giobbe. Era quest'uomo semplice e retto, timorato di Dio e alieno del male.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 Aveva egli sette figli e tre figlie;
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 i suoi possedimenti erano di settemila pecore e tremila cammelli, cinquecento paia di buoi e cinquecento asine, e una servitù assai grande: ed era quest'uomo assai potente fra tutti gli Orientali.
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 E i suoi figli andavano a tener convito nelle [singole loro] case, ciascuno nel giorno rispettivo: mandavano anche ad invitare le loro tre sorelle perchè mangiassero e bevessero insieme con essi.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 Quando poi era finito il giro dei giorni di convito, Giobbe li mandava a chiamare, e santificatili si alzava di buon mattino ed offriva olocausti per ciascuno di essi. Egli infatti diceva: «Potrebbe darsi che i miei figli abbiano peccato ed abbiano benedetto Dio nel loro cuore!». Così faceva Giobbe in ogni tempo.
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 Ma in un certo giorno, essendo venuti i figli di Dio a presentarsi al Signore, venne fra loro anche Satana.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 E il Signore disse a costui: «Donde vieni?». E questi rispose: «Ho fatto il giro della terra e l'ho scorsa».
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 E il Signore gli disse: «Hai tu notato il mio servo Giobbe, come non vi sia sulla terra uno somigliante a lui, uomo semplice e retto, timorato di Dio e alieno del male?».
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 Satana però gli rispose: «Giobbe teme forse Dio senza guadagno?
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 Non hai tu forse ricinto torno a torno con un riparo lui e la sua famiglia e tutte le sue possessioni, e non hai tu benedetto i lavori delle sue mani cosicchè i suoi beni si sono moltiplicati sulla terra?
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Stendi invece alquanto la tua mano e toccagli tutto ciò che possiede: [io giuro] ch'egli in faccia tua ti benedirà».
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 Il Signore disse allora a Satana: «Ecco, tutto quello che egli possiede è in tuo potere; soltanto su lui [in persona] non stenderai la tua mano». Satana allora si ritirò dalla presenza del Signore.
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 Mentre pertanto un giorno i figli e le figlie di lui mangiavano e bevevano vino in casa del loro fratello primogenito,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 arrivò a Giobbe un nunzio che disse: «I buoi stavano ad arare e le asine a pascolare vicino ad essi,
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 quando sono piombati i Sabei e han preso tutto; hanno anche passato a fil di spada i garzoni, e sono scampato io solo sì da poterlo annunziare!».
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 Costui stava ancora a parlare, quando arrivò un altro e disse: «Il fuoco di Dio è caduto dal cielo, e divampando fra le pecore e i garzoni li ha consumati, e sono scampato io solo sì da potertelo annunziare!».
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 Ma costui stava ancora a parlare, quando arrivò un altro e disse: «I Caldei, formate tre schiere, hanno fatto un'incursione sopra i cammelli e li hanno presi, hanno passato i garzoni a fil di spada, e sono scampato io solo sì da poterlo annunziare!».
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Costui stava ancora a parlare, quando arrivò un altro e disse: «Mentre i tuoi figli e figlie stavano mangiando e bevendo vino in casa del loro fratello primogenito,
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 ad un tratto un vento impetuoso s'è scatenato dalla parte del deserto, ha scosso i quattro angoli della casa, questa è caduta, ha oppresso i tuoi figli che son morti; e sono scampato io solo sì da potertelo annunziare».
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Allora Giobbe, levatosi su, si strappò le vesti, si rase il capo, e prostratosi in terra compiè adorazione,
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 e disse: «Ignudo sono uscito dal ventre di mia madre, e ignudo tornerò laggiù! Il Signore ha dato, il Signore ha tolto; come piacque al Signore, così è avvenuto; sia benedetto il nome del Signore!».
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 In tutte queste cose Giobbe non peccò con le sue labbra, nè disse nulla di stolto contro Dio.
