Job 1

1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 Viveva nella terra di Us un uomo chiamato Giobbe, integro e retto, timorato di Dio e lontano dal male.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 Gli erano nati sette figli e tre figlie;
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 possedeva settemila pecore e tremila cammelli, cinquecento paia di buoi e cinquecento asine, e una servitù molto numerosa. Quest’uomo era il più grande fra tutti i figli d’oriente.
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 I suoi figli solevano andare a fare banchetti in casa di uno di loro, ciascuno nel suo giorno, e mandavano a invitare le loro tre sorelle per mangiare e bere insieme.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 Quando avevano compiuto il turno dei giorni del banchetto, Giobbe li mandava a chiamare per purificarli; si alzava di buon mattino e offriva olocausti per ognuno di loro. Giobbe infatti pensava: «Forse i miei figli hanno peccato e hanno maledetto Dio nel loro cuore». Così era solito fare Giobbe ogni volta.
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 Ora, un giorno, i figli di Dio andarono a presentarsi al Signore e anche Satana andò in mezzo a loro.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 Il Signore chiese a Satana: «Da dove vieni?». Satana rispose al Signore: «Dalla terra, che ho percorso in lungo e in largo».
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 Il Signore disse a Satana: «Hai posto attenzione al mio servo Giobbe? Nessuno è come lui sulla terra: uomo integro e retto, timorato di Dio e lontano dal male».
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 Satana rispose al Signore: «Forse che Giobbe teme Dio per nulla?
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 Non sei forse tu che hai messo una siepe intorno a lui e alla sua casa e a tutto quello che è suo? Tu hai benedetto il lavoro delle sue mani e i suoi possedimenti si espandono sulla terra.
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Ma stendi un poco la mano e tocca quanto ha, e vedrai come ti maledirà apertamente!».
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 Il Signore disse a Satana: «Ecco, quanto possiede è in tuo potere, ma non stendere la mano su di lui». Satana si ritirò dalla presenza del Signore.
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 Un giorno accadde che, mentre i suoi figli e le sue figlie stavano mangiando e bevendo vino in casa del fratello maggiore,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 un messaggero venne da Giobbe e gli disse: «I buoi stavano arando e le asine pascolando vicino ad essi.
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 I Sabei hanno fatto irruzione, li hanno portati via e hanno passato a fil di spada i guardiani. Sono scampato soltanto io per raccontartelo».
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 Mentre egli ancora parlava, entrò un altro e disse: «Un fuoco divino è caduto dal cielo: si è appiccato alle pecore e ai guardiani e li ha divorati. Sono scampato soltanto io per raccontartelo».
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 Mentre egli ancora parlava, entrò un altro e disse: «I Caldei hanno formato tre bande: sono piombati sopra i cammelli e li hanno portati via e hanno passato a fil di spada i guardiani. Sono scampato soltanto io per raccontartelo».
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Mentre egli ancora parlava, entrò un altro e disse: «I tuoi figli e le tue figlie stavano mangiando e bevendo vino in casa del loro fratello maggiore,
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 quand’ecco un vento impetuoso si è scatenato da oltre il deserto: ha investito i quattro lati della casa, che è rovinata sui giovani e sono morti. Sono scampato soltanto io per raccontartelo».
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Allora Giobbe si alzò e si stracciò il mantello; si rase il capo, cadde a terra, si prostrò
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 e disse: «Nudo uscii dal grembo di mia madre, e nudo vi ritornerò. Il Signore ha dato, il Signore ha tolto, sia benedetto il nome del Signore!».
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 In tutto questo Giobbe non peccò e non attribuì a Dio nulla di ingiusto.
