NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
It happened, once David had settled into his palace, that David said to the prophet Nathan, 'Here am Iliving in a cedar-wood palace, while the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is under awnings.'1 Cum autem habitaret David in domo sua, dixit ad Nathan prophetam : Ecce ego habito in domo cedrina : arca autem fœderis Domini sub pellibus est.
Nathan said to David, 'Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you.'2 Et ait Nathan ad David : Omnia quæ in corde tuo sunt, fac : Deus enim tecum est.
But that very night the word of God came to Nathan, as fol ows:3 Igitur nocte illa factus est sermo Dei ad Nathan, dicens :
'Go and tell my servant David, "Yahweh says this: You must not build a temple for me to live in.4 Vade, et loquere David servo meo : Hæc dicit Dominus : Non ædificabis tu mihi domum ad habitandum.
I have never lived in a house from the day when I brought Israel out until today, but have kepttravel ing from tent to tent and from shelter to shelter.5 Neque enim mansi in domo ex eo tempore quo eduxi Israël usque ad diem hanc : sed fui semper mutans loca tabernaculi, et in tentorio
In al my travels with al Israel, did I say to any of the judges of Israel, whom I had commanded toshepherd my people: Why do you not build me a cedar-wood temple?6 manens cum omni Israël. Numquid locutus sum saltem uni judicum Israël, quibus præceperam ut pascerent populum meum, et dixi : Quare non ædificastis mihi domum cedrinam ?
This is what you must say to my servant David: Yahweh Sabaoth says this: I took you from thepasture, from following the sheep, to be leader of my people Israel.7 Nunc itaque sic loqueris ad servum meum David : Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Ego tuli te, cum in pascuis sequereris gregem, ut esses dux populi mei Israël :
I have been with you wherever you went; I have got rid of al your enemies for you. I am going to makeyour fame like that of the greatest men on earth.8 et fui tecum quocumque perrexisti, et interfeci omnes inimicos tuos coram te, fecique tibi nomen quasi unius magnorum qui celebrantur in terra.
I am going to provide a place for my people Israel; I shal plant them there and there they will live andnever be disturbed again; nor wil they be oppressed by the wicked as they were in former times9 Et dedi locum populo meo Israël : plantabitur, et habitabit in eo, et ultra non commovebitur : nec filii iniquitatis atterent eos, sicut a principio,
ever since I instituted judges to govern my people Israel; I shall subdue al your enemies. Yahwehmoreover tel s you that he wil build you a dynasty.10 ex diebus quibus dedi judices populo meo Israël, et humiliavi universos inimicos tuos. Annuntio ergo tibi, quod ædificaturus sit tibi Dominus domum.
And when your days are over and you have gone to join your ancestors, I shall appoint your heir --who wil be one of your sons -- to succeed you, and I shall make his sovereignty secure.11 Cumque impleveris dies tuos ut vadas ad patres tuos, suscitabo semen tuum post te, quod erit de filiis tuis : et stabiliam regnum ejus.
He wil build a temple for me and I shal make his throne secure for ever.12 Ipse ædificabit mihi domum, et firmabo solium ejus usque in æternum.
I shal be his father and he wil be my son, and I shal not withdraw my favour from him, as I withdrewit from your predecessor.13 Ego ero ei in patrem, et ipse erit mihi in filium : et misericordiam meam non auferam ab eo, sicut abstuli ab eo qui ante te fuit.
I shal set him over my temple and kingdom for ever and his throne wil be for ever secure." '14 Et statuam eum in domo mea, et in regno meo usque in sempiternum : et thronus ejus erit firmissimus in perpetuum.
Nathan related al these words and this whole revelation to David.15 Juxta omnia verba hæc, et juxta universam visionem istam, sic locutus est Nathan ad David.
King David then went in, sat down in Yahweh's presence and said: 'Who am I, Yahweh God, andwhat is my lineage, that you have led me as far as this?16 Cumque venisset rex David, et sedisset coram Domino, dixit : Quis ego sum, Domine Deus, et quæ domus mea, ut præstares mihi talia ?
Yet, to you, O God, this seemed too little, and now you extend your promises for your servant'sfamily into the distant future, making me see as it were a whole succession of men, and it is Yahweh Godhimself who raises it up.17 sed et hoc parum visum est in conspectu tuo, ideoque locutus es super domum servi tui etiam in futurum : et fecisti me spectabilem super omnes homines, Domine Deus.
What more can David reply to you for the honour you have given to your servant? You yourself havesingled out your servant.18 Quid ultra addere potest David, cum ita glorificaveris servum tuum, et cognoveris eum ?
For your servant, and since you were so inclined, you have had the generosity to reveal al thisgreatness to come.19 Domine, propter famulum tuum juxta cor tuum fecisti omnem magnificentiam hanc, et nota esse voluisti universa magnalia.
Yahweh, there is no one like you, no God but you alone, as everything that we have heard confirms.20 Domine, non est similis tui, et non est alius deus absque te, ex omnibus quos audivimus auribus nostris.
Is there another people on earth like your people Israel, whom a god has proceeded to redeem, tomake them his people and to make them famous and do for them great and terrible deeds, by driving out nationsbefore your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?
for you made your people Israel your own people for ever and you, Yahweh, became their God.22 Et posuisti populum tuum Israël tibi in populum usque in æternum, et tu, Domine, factus es Deus ejus.
'Now, Yahweh, may the promise which you have made for your servant and as regards his familyhold good for ever, and do as you have said.23 Nunc igitur Domine, sermo quem locutus es famulo tuo et super domum ejus confirmetur in perpetuum, et fac sicut locutus es.
May it hold good, so your name wil be exalted for ever and people wil say, "Israel's God is YahwehSabaoth; he is God for Israel." Your servant David's dynasty will be secure before you24 Permaneatque et magnificetur nomen tuum usque in sempiternum, et dicatur : Dominus exercituum Deus Israël, et domus David servi ejus permanens coram eo.
since you, my God, have disclosed to your servant that you are going to build him a dynasty. Hence, your servant has ventured to offer this prayer to you.25 Tu enim, Domine Deus meus, revelasti auriculam servi tui, ut ædificares ei domum : et idcirco invenit servus tuus fiduciam, ut oret coram te.
Yes, Yahweh, you are God indeed, and you have made this generous promise to your servant.26 Nunc ergo Domine, tu es Deus, et locutus es ad servum tuum tanta beneficia.
What is more, you have deigned to bless your servant's dynasty, so that it may remain for everbefore you; and since you, Yahweh, have blessed it, blessed will it be for ever.'27 Et cœpisti benedicere domui servi tui, ut sit semper coram te : te enim, Domine, benedicente, benedicta erit in perpetuum.
