1 It happened, once David had settled into his palace, that David said to the prophet Nathan, 'Here am Iliving in a cedar-wood palace, while the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is under awnings.'	1 ויהי כאשר ישב דויד בביתו ויאמר דויד אל נתן הנביא הנה אנכי יושב בבית הארזים וארון ברית יהוה תחת יריעות
2 Nathan said to David, 'Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you.'	2 ויאמר נתן אל דויד כל אשר בלבבך עשה כי האלהים עמך
3 But that very night the word of God came to Nathan, as fol ows:	3 ויהי בלילה ההוא ויהי דבר אלהים אל נתן לאמר
4 'Go and tell my servant David, "Yahweh says this: You must not build a temple for me to live in.	4 לך ואמרת אל דויד עבדי כה אמר יהוה לא אתה תבנה לי הבית לשבת
5 I have never lived in a house from the day when I brought Israel out until today, but have kepttravel ing from tent to tent and from shelter to shelter.	5 כי לא ישבתי בבית מן היום אשר העליתי את ישראל עד היום הזה ואהיה מאהל אל אהל וממשכן
6 In al my travels with al Israel, did I say to any of the judges of Israel, whom I had commanded toshepherd my people: Why do you not build me a cedar-wood temple?	6 בכל אשר התהלכתי בכל ישראל הדבר דברתי את אחד שפטי ישראל אשר צויתי לרעות את עמי לאמר למה לא בניתם לי בית ארזים
7 This is what you must say to my servant David: Yahweh Sabaoth says this: I took you from thepasture, from following the sheep, to be leader of my people Israel.	7 ועתה כה תאמר לעבדי לדויד כה אמר יהוה צבאות אני לקחתיך מן הנוה מן אחרי הצאן להיות נגיד על עמי ישראל
8 I have been with you wherever you went; I have got rid of al your enemies for you. I am going to makeyour fame like that of the greatest men on earth.	8 ואהיה עמך בכל אשר הלכת ואכרית את כל אויביך מפניך ועשיתי לך שם כשם הגדולים אשר בארץ
9 I am going to provide a place for my people Israel; I shal plant them there and there they will live andnever be disturbed again; nor wil they be oppressed by the wicked as they were in former times	9 ושמתי מקום לעמי ישראל ונטעתיהו ושכן תחתיו ולא ירגז עוד ולא יוסיפו בני עולה לבלתו כאשר בראשונה
10 ever since I instituted judges to govern my people Israel; I shall subdue al your enemies. Yahwehmoreover tel s you that he wil build you a dynasty.	10 ולמימים אשר צויתי שפטים על עמי ישראל והכנעתי את כל אויביך ואגד לך ובית יבנה לך יהוה
11 And when your days are over and you have gone to join your ancestors, I shall appoint your heir --who wil be one of your sons -- to succeed you, and I shall make his sovereignty secure.	11 והיה כי מלאו ימיך ללכת עם אבתיך והקימותי את זרעך אחריך אשר יהיה מבניך והכינותי את מלכותו
12 He wil build a temple for me and I shal make his throne secure for ever.	12 הוא יבנה לי בית וכננתי את כסאו עד עולם
13 I shal be his father and he wil be my son, and I shal not withdraw my favour from him, as I withdrewit from your predecessor.	13 אני אהיה לו לאב והוא יהיה לי לבן וחסדי לא אסיר מעמו כאשר הסירותי מאשר היה לפניך
14 I shal set him over my temple and kingdom for ever and his throne wil be for ever secure." '	14 והעמדתיהו בביתי ובמלכותי עד העולם וכסאו יהיה נכון עד עולם
15 Nathan related al these words and this whole revelation to David.	15 ככל הדברים האלה וככל החזון הזה כן דבר נתן אל דויד
16 King David then went in, sat down in Yahweh's presence and said: 'Who am I, Yahweh God, andwhat is my lineage, that you have led me as far as this?	16 ויבא המלך דויד וישב לפני יהוה ויאמר מי אני יהוה אלהים ומי ביתי כי הביאתני עד הלם
17 Yet, to you, O God, this seemed too little, and now you extend your promises for your servant'sfamily into the distant future, making me see as it were a whole succession of men, and it is Yahweh Godhimself who raises it up.	17 ותקטן זאת בעיניך אלהים ותדבר על בית עבדך למרחוק וראיתני כתור האדם המעלה יהוה אלהים
18 What more can David reply to you for the honour you have given to your servant? You yourself havesingled out your servant.	18 מה יוסיף עוד דויד אליך לכבוד את עבדך ואתה את עבדך ידעת
19 For your servant, and since you were so inclined, you have had the generosity to reveal al thisgreatness to come.	19 יהוה בעבור עבדך וכלבך עשית את כל הגדולה הזאת להדיע את כל הגדלות
20 Yahweh, there is no one like you, no God but you alone, as everything that we have heard confirms.	20 יהוה אין כמוך ואין אלהים זולתך בכל אשר שמענו באזנינו
21 Is there another people on earth like your people Israel, whom a god has proceeded to redeem, tomake them his people and to make them famous and do for them great and terrible deeds, by driving out nationsbefore your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? -	21 ומי כעמך ישראל גוי אחד בארץ אשר הלך האלהים לפדות לו עם לשום לך שם גדלות ונראות לגרש מפני עמך אשר פדית ממצרים גוים
22 for you made your people Israel your own people for ever and you, Yahweh, became their God.	22 ותתן את עמך ישראל לך לעם עד עולם ואתה יהוה היית להם לאלהים
23 'Now, Yahweh, may the promise which you have made for your servant and as regards his familyhold good for ever, and do as you have said.	23 ועתה יהוה הדבר אשר דברת על עבדך ועל ביתו יאמן עד עולם ועשה כאשר דברת
24 May it hold good, so your name wil be exalted for ever and people wil say, "Israel's God is YahwehSabaoth; he is God for Israel." Your servant David's dynasty will be secure before you	24 ויאמן ויגדל שמך עד עולם לאמר יהוה צבאות אלהי ישראל אלהים לישראל ובית דויד עבדך נכון לפניך
25 since you, my God, have disclosed to your servant that you are going to build him a dynasty. Hence,your servant has ventured to offer this prayer to you.	25 כי אתה אלהי גלית את אזן עבדך לבנות לו בית על כן מצא עבדך להתפלל לפניך
26 Yes, Yahweh, you are God indeed, and you have made this generous promise to your servant.	26 ועתה יהוה אתה הוא האלהים ותדבר על עבדך הטובה הזאת
27 What is more, you have deigned to bless your servant's dynasty, so that it may remain for everbefore you; and since you, Yahweh, have blessed it, blessed will it be for ever.'	27 ועתה הואלת לברך את בית עבדך להיות לעולם לפניך כי אתה יהוה ברכת ומברך לעולם
