NEW JERUSALEMSTUTTGARTENSIA-DELITZSCH
It happened, once David had settled into his palace, that David said to the prophet Nathan, 'Here am Iliving in a cedar-wood palace, while the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is under awnings.'1 וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר יָשַׁב דָּוִיד בְּבֵיתֹו וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד אֶל־נָתָן הַנָּבִיא הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי יֹושֵׁב בְּבֵית הָאֲרָזִים וַאֲרֹון בְּרִית־יְהוָה תַּחַת יְרִיעֹות
Nathan said to David, 'Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you.'2 וַיֹּאמֶר נָתָן אֶל־דָּוִיד כֹּל אֲשֶׁר בִּלְבָבְךָ עֲשֵׂה כִּי הָאֱלֹהִים עִמָּךְ׃ ס
But that very night the word of God came to Nathan, as fol ows:3
'Go and tell my servant David, "Yahweh says this: You must not build a temple for me to live in.4 לֵךְ וְאָמַרְתָּ אֶל־דָּוִיד עַבְדִּי כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה לֹא אַתָּה תִּבְנֶה־לִּי הַבַּיִת לָשָׁבֶת
I have never lived in a house from the day when I brought Israel out until today, but have kepttravel ing from tent to tent and from shelter to shelter.5 כִּי לֹא יָשַׁבְתִּי בְּבַיִת מִן־הַיֹּום אֲשֶׁר הֶעֱלֵיתִי אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל עַד הַיֹּום הַזֶּה וָאֶהְיֶה מֵאֹהֶל אֶל־אֹהֶל וּמִמִּשְׁכָּן
In al my travels with al Israel, did I say to any of the judges of Israel, whom I had commanded toshepherd my people: Why do you not build me a cedar-wood temple?6 בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר־הִתְהַלַּכְתִּי בְּכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵל הֲדָבָר דִּבַּרְתִּי אֶת־אַחַד שֹׁפְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתִי לִרְעֹות אֶת־עַמִּי לֵאמֹר לָמָּה לֹא־בְנִיתֶם לִי בֵּית אֲרָזִים
This is what you must say to my servant David: Yahweh Sabaoth says this: I took you from thepasture, from following the sheep, to be leader of my people Israel.7 וְעַתָּה כֹּה־תֹאמַר לְעַבְדִּי לְדָוִיד ס כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות אֲנִי לְקַחְתִּיךָ מִן־הַנָּוֶה מִן־אַחֲרֵי הַצֹּאן לִהְיֹות נָגִיד עַל עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל
I have been with you wherever you went; I have got rid of al your enemies for you. I am going to makeyour fame like that of the greatest men on earth.8 וָאֶהְיֶה עִמְּךָ בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר הָלַכְתָּ וָאַכְרִית אֶת־כָּל־אֹויְבֶיךָ מִפָּנֶיךָ וְעָשִׂיתִי לְךָ שֵׁם כְּשֵׁם הַגְּדֹולִים אֲשֶׁר בָּאָרֶץ
I am going to provide a place for my people Israel; I shal plant them there and there they will live andnever be disturbed again; nor wil they be oppressed by the wicked as they were in former times9 וְשַׂמְתִּי מָקֹום לְעַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל וּנְטַעְתִּיהוּ וְשָׁכַן תַּחְתָּיו וְלֹא יִרְגַּז עֹוד וְלֹא־יֹוסִיפוּ בְנֵי־עַוְלָה לְבַלֹּתֹו כַּאֲשֶׁר בָּרִאשֹׁונָה
ever since I instituted judges to govern my people Israel; I shall subdue al your enemies. Yahwehmoreover tel s you that he wil build you a dynasty.10 וּלְמִיָּמִים אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתִי שֹׁפְטִים עַל־עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהִכְנַעְתִּי אֶת־כָּל־אֹויְבֶיךָ וָאַגִּד לָךְ וּבַיִת יִבְנֶה־לְּךָ יְהוָה
And when your days are over and you have gone to join your ancestors, I shall appoint your heir --who wil be one of your sons -- to succeed you, and I shall make his sovereignty secure.11 וְהָיָה כִּי־מָלְאוּ יָמֶיךָ לָלֶכֶת עִם־אֲבֹתֶיךָ וַהֲקִימֹותִי אֶת־זַרְעֲךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה מִבָּנֶיךָ וַהֲכִינֹותִי אֶת־מַלְכוּתֹו
He wil build a temple for me and I shal make his throne secure for ever.12
I shal be his father and he wil be my son, and I shal not withdraw my favour from him, as I withdrewit from your predecessor.13 אֲנִי אֶהְיֶה־לֹּו לְאָב וְהוּא יִהְיֶה־לִּי לְבֵן וְחַסְדִּי לֹא־אָסִיר מֵעִמֹּו כַּאֲשֶׁר הֲסִירֹותִי מֵאֲשֶׁר הָיָה לְפָנֶיךָ
I shal set him over my temple and kingdom for ever and his throne wil be for ever secure." '14 וְהַעֲמַדְתִּיהוּ בְּבֵיתִי וּבְמַלְכוּתִי עַד־הָעֹולָם וְכִסְאֹו יִהְיֶה נָכֹון עַד־עֹולָם
Nathan related al these words and this whole revelation to David.15
King David then went in, sat down in Yahweh's presence and said: 'Who am I, Yahweh God, andwhat is my lineage, that you have led me as far as this?16 וַיָּבֹא הַמֶּלֶךְ דָּוִיד וַיֵּשֶׁב לִפְנֵי יְהוָה וַיֹּאמֶר מִי־אֲנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים וּמִי בֵיתִי כִּי הֲבִיאֹתַנִי עַד־הֲלֹם
Yet, to you, O God, this seemed too little, and now you extend your promises for your servant'sfamily into the distant future, making me see as it were a whole succession of men, and it is Yahweh Godhimself who raises it up.17 וַתִּקְטַן זֹאת בְּעֵינֶיךָ אֱלֹהִים וַתְּדַבֵּר עַל־בֵּית־עַבְדְּךָ לְמֵרָחֹוק וּרְאִיתַנִי כְּתֹור הָאָדָם הַמַּעֲלָה יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים
What more can David reply to you for the honour you have given to your servant? You yourself havesingled out your servant.18 מַה־יֹּוסִיף עֹוד דָּוִיד אֵלֶיךָ לְכָבֹוד אֶת־עַבְדֶּךָ וְאַתָּה אֶת־עַבְדְּךָ יָדָעְתָּ
For your servant, and since you were so inclined, you have had the generosity to reveal al thisgreatness to come.19 יְהוָה בַּעֲבוּר עַבְדְּךָ וּכְלִבְּךָ עָשִׂיתָ אֵת כָּל־הַגְּדוּלָּה הַזֹּאת לְהֹדִיעַ אֶת־כָּל־הַגְּדֻלֹּות
Yahweh, there is no one like you, no God but you alone, as everything that we have heard confirms.20
Is there another people on earth like your people Israel, whom a god has proceeded to redeem, tomake them his people and to make them famous and do for them great and terrible deeds, by driving out nationsbefore your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?
for you made your people Israel your own people for ever and you, Yahweh, became their God.22 וַתִּתֵּן אֶת־עַמְּךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל ׀ לְךָ לְעָם עַד־עֹולָם וְאַתָּה יְהוָה הָיִיתָ לָהֶם לֵאלֹהִים
'Now, Yahweh, may the promise which you have made for your servant and as regards his familyhold good for ever, and do as you have said.23 וְעַתָּה יְהוָה הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ עַל־עַבְדְּךָ וְעַל־בֵּיתֹו יֵאָמֵן עַד־עֹולָם וַעֲשֵׂה כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ
May it hold good, so your name wil be exalted for ever and people wil say, "Israel's God is YahwehSabaoth; he is God for Israel." Your servant David's dynasty will be secure before you24 וְיֵאָמֵן וְיִגְדַּל שִׁמְךָ עַד־עֹולָם לֵאמֹר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֱלֹהִים לְיִשְׂרָאֵל וּבֵית־דָּוִיד עַבְדְּךָ נָכֹון לְפָנֶיךָ
since you, my God, have disclosed to your servant that you are going to build him a dynasty. Hence,your servant has ventured to offer this prayer to you.25 כִּי ׀ אַתָּה אֱלֹהַי גָּלִיתָ אֶת־אֹזֶן עַבְדְּךָ לִבְנֹות לֹו בָּיִת עַל־כֵּן מָצָא עַבְדְּךָ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל לְפָנֶיךָ
Yes, Yahweh, you are God indeed, and you have made this generous promise to your servant.26
What is more, you have deigned to bless your servant's dynasty, so that it may remain for everbefore you; and since you, Yahweh, have blessed it, blessed will it be for ever.'27 וְעַתָּה הֹואַלְתָּ לְבָרֵךְ אֶת־בֵּית עַבְדְּךָ לִהְיֹות לְעֹולָם לְפָנֶיךָ כִּי־אַתָּה יְהוָה בֵּרַכְתָּ וּמְבֹרָךְ לְעֹולָם׃ פ
