1 Naaman, army commander to the king of Aram, was a man who enjoyed his master's respect andfavour, since through him Yahweh had granted victory to the Aramaeans.	1 Naaman, général de l'armée du roi de Syrie, était puissant et en grand honneur auprès de son maître, parce que le Seigneur avait sauvé par lui la Syrie. Il était vaillant et riche, mais lèpreux.
2 But the man suffered from a virulent skin-disease. Now, on one of their raids into Israelite territory, theAramaeans had carried off a little girl, who became a servant of Naaman's wife.	2 Or quelques voleurs, sortis de Syrie, avaient emmené captive une petite fille du pays d'Israël, qui fut depuis mise au service de la femme de Naaman.
3 She said to her mistress, 'If only my master would approach the prophet of Samaria! He would cure himof his skin-disease.'	3 Et elle dit à sa maîtresse : Plût à Dieu que mon seigneur eût été trouver le prophète qui est à Samarie! Il l'aurait sans doute guéri de sa lèpre.
4 Naaman went and told his master. 'This and this', he reported, 'is what the girl from Israel has said.'	4 Naaman vint donc trouver son maître, et lui dit : Une jeune fille d'Israël a dit telle et telle chose.
5 'Go by al means,' said the king of Aram, 'I shal send a letter to the king of Israel.' So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten festal robes.	5 Le roi de Syrie lui répondit : Allez, et j'écrirai au roi d'Israël. Il partit, prit avec lui dix talents d'argent, six mille écus d'or, et dix vêtements de rechange,
6 He presented the letter to the king of Israel. It read, 'With this letter, I am sending my servant Naaman toyou for you to cure him of his skin-disease.'	6 et porta au roi d'Israël la lettre, qui était conçue en ces termes : Lorsque vous aurez reçu cette lettre, vous saurez je vous ai envoyé Naaman, mon serviteur, afin que vous le guérissiez de sa lèpre.
7 When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes. 'Am I a god to give death and life,' he said,'for him to send a man to me and ask me to cure him of his skin-disease? Listen to this and take note of it andsee how he intends to pick a quarrel with me.'	7 Lorsque le roi d'Israël eut lu cette lettre, il déchira ses vêtements, et dit : Suis-je un Dieu, pour pouvoir ôter et rendre la vie? Pourquoi m'a-t-il envoyé un homme afin que je le guérisse de sa lèpre? Remarquez et voyez qu'il cherche une occasion de dispute contre moi.
8 When Elisha heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent word to the king, 'Why have youtorn your clothes? Let him come to me, and he wil find there is a prophet in Israel.'	8 Elisée, homme de Dieu, ayant appris que le roi d'Israël avait déchiré ainsi ses vêtements, lui envoya dire : Pourquoi avez-vous déchiré vos vêtements? Que cet homme vienne à moi, et qu'il sache qu'il y a un prophète en Israël.
9 So Naaman came with his team and chariot and drew up at the door of Elisha's house.	9 Naaman vint donc avec ses chevaux et ses chars, et s'arrêta à la porte de la maison d'Elisée.
10 And Elisha sent him a messenger to say, 'Go and bathe seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh wilbecome clean once more.'	10 Et Elisée lui envoya un messager pour lui dire : Allez vous laver sept fois dans le Jourdain, et votre chair se guérira, et vous serez purifié.
11 But Naaman was indignant and went off, saying, 'Here was I, thinking he would be sure to come out tome, and stand there, and cal on the name of Yahweh his God, and wave his hand over the spot and cure thepart that was diseased.	11 Naaman se retirait irrité, en disant : Je croyais qu'il sortirait vers moi, et que, se tenant debout, il invoquerait le nom du Seigneur son Dieu, qu'il toucherait de sa main ma lèpre, et qu'il me guérirait.
12 Surely, Abana and Parpar, the rivers of Damascus, are better than any water in Israel? Could I notbathe in them and become clean?' And he turned round and went off in a rage.	12 Les fleuves d'Abana, et de Pharphar, à Damas, ne sont-ils pas meilleurs que tous ceux d'Israël? Ne puis-je pas m'y laver, et devenir pur? Il s'était déjà retourné, et s'en allait tout indigné,
13 But his servants approached him and said, 'Father, if the prophet had asked you to do somethingdifficult, would you not have done it? Al the more reason, then, when he says to you, "Bathe, and you wilbecome clean." '	13 lorsque ses serviteurs s'approchèrent de lui, et lui dirent : Père, alors même que le prophète vous aurait ordonné une chose difficile, vous auriez dû néanmoins la faire; combien plus deviez-vous obéir, lorsqu'il vous a dit : Allez vous laver, et vous deviendrez pur?
14 So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, as Elisha had told him to do. Andhis flesh became clean once more like the flesh of a little child.	14 Il s'en alla donc, et se lava sept fois dans le Jourdain, selon l'ordre de l'homme de Dieu; et sa chair devint comme la chair d'un petit enfant, et il fut guéri.
15 Returning to Elisha with his whole escort, he went in and, presenting himself, said, 'Now I know thatthere is no God anywhere on earth except in Israel. Now, please, accept a present from your servant.'	15 Et il retourna avec toute sa suite vers l'homme de Dieu; et il vint se présenter devant lui, et lui dit : Je sais certainement qu'il n'y a pas d'autre Dieu dans toute la terre que Celui qui est en Israël. Je vous conjure donc d'accepter l'offrande de votre serviteur.
16 But Elisha replied, 'As Yahweh lives, whom I serve, I wil accept nothing.' Naaman pressed him toaccept, but he refused.	16 Elisée lui répondit : Vive le Seigneur devant lequel je me tiens! Je ne recevrai rien. Et, quelque instance que fît Naaman, il ne voulut jamais céder.
17 Then Naaman said, 'Since your answer is "No," al ow your servant to be given as much earth as twomules may carry, since your servant wil no longer make burnt offerings or sacrifice to any god except Yahweh.	17 Et Naaman lui dit : Comme vous voudrez; mais, je vous prie, permettez-moi d'emporter la charge de deux mulets de la terre de ce pays. Car à l'avenir votre serviteur n'offrira plus d'holocauste ou de victime aux dieux étrangers, mais seulement au Seigneur.
18 Only -- and may Yahweh forgive your servant for this -- when my master goes to the temple of Rimmonto worship there, he leans on my arm, and I bow down in the temple of Rimmon when he does; may Yahwehforgive your servant for doing this!'	18 Il n'y a qu'une chose au sujet de laquelle vous voudrez bien prier le Seigneur pour votre serviteur : lorsque le roi mon seigneur entrera dans le temple de Remmon pour adorer en s'appuyant sur ma main, si je me prosterne dans le temple de Remmon, lorsqu'il se prosternera lui-même, que le Seigneur me le pardonne.
19 'Go in peace,' Elisha replied.	19 Elisée lui répondit : Allez en paix. Naaman se sépara ainsi de lui, et il avait déjà fait quelque chemin,
20 Naaman had gone a smal distance, when Gehazi, Elisha's servant, said to himself, 'My master has letthis Aramaean Naaman off lightly, by not accepting what he offered. As Yahweh lives, I will run after him and getsomething out of him.'	20 lorsque Giézi, serviteur de l'homme de Dieu, dit en lui-même : Mon maître a épargné ce Syrien Naaman, et n'a rien voulu recevoir de lui. Vive le Seigneur! je courrai après lui, et j'en recevrai quelque chose.
21 So Gehazi set off in pursuit of Naaman. When Naaman saw him running after him, he jumped downfrom his chariot to meet him. 'Is all well?' he asked.	21 Giézi s'en alla donc après Naaman, et celui-ci, le voyant courir vers lui, descendit promptement de son char, vint au-devant de lui, et lui dit : Tout va-t-il bien?
22 'All is well,' he said. 'My master has sent me to say, "This very moment two young men of the propheticbrotherhood have arrived from the highlands of Ephraim. Be kind enough to give them a talent of silver and twofestal robes." '	22 Giézi lui répondit : Très bien : Mon maître m'a envoyé vous dire : Deux jeunes hommes des fils des prophètes sont arrivés tout à l'heure de la montagne d'Ephraïm; donnez-leur un talent d'argent et deux vêtements de rechange.
23 'Please accept two talents,' Naaman replied, and pressed him, tying up the two talents of silver in twobags with the two festal robes and consigning them to two of his servants who carried them ahead of Gehazi.	23 Naaman lui dit : Il vaut mieux que tu prennes deux talents. Et il le contraignit de les recevoir; et il mit les deux talents d'argent dans deux sacs, prit deux vêtements, et il en chargea deux de ses serviteurs, qui les portèrent devant Giézi.
24 When he reached Ophel, he took these from them and put them away in the house. He then dismissedthe men, who went away.	24 Lorsque le soir fut venu, Giézi les prit de leurs mains et les serra dans sa maison, et il renvoya ces gens, qui s'en retournèrent.
25 He, for his part, went and presented himself to his master. Elisha said, 'Gehazi, where have you been?''Your servant has not been anywhere,' he replied.	25 Giézi entra ensuite, et se tint devant son maître. Et Elisée lui dit : D'où viens-tu, Giézi? Giézi lui répondit : Votre serviteur n'a été nulle part.
26 But Elisha said to him, 'Was not my heart present there when someone left his chariot to meet you?Now you have taken the money, you can buy gardens with it, and olive groves, sheep and oxen, male andfemale slaves.	26 Mais Elisée lui répondit : Mon coeur n'était-il pas présent avec toi lorsque cet homme est descendu de son char pour aller au-devant de toi? Maintenant donc, tu as reçu de l'argent et des habits pour acheter des plants d'oliviers, des vignes, des boeufs, des brebis, des serviteurs et des servantes.
27 But Naaman's disease of the skin wil cling to you and your descendants for ever.' And Gehazi left hispresence white as snow from skin-disease.	27 Mais aussi la lèpre de Naaman s'attachera à toi et à toute ta race pour jamais. Et Giézi se retira d'avec son maître tout couvert d'une lèpre blanche comme la neige.
