NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Naaman, army commander to the king of Aram, was a man who enjoyed his master's respect andfavour, since through him Yahweh had granted victory to the Aramaeans.1 Naaman princeps militiæ regis Syriæ erat vir magnus apud dominum suum, et honoratus : per illum enim dedit Dominus salutem Syriæ : erat autem vir fortis et dives, sed leprosus.
But the man suffered from a virulent skin-disease. Now, on one of their raids into Israelite territory, theAramaeans had carried off a little girl, who became a servant of Naaman's wife.2 Porro de Syria egressi fuerant latrunculi, et captivam duxerant de terra Israël puellam parvulam, quæ erat in obsequio uxoris Naaman :
She said to her mistress, 'If only my master would approach the prophet of Samaria! He would cure himof his skin-disease.'3 quæ ait ad dominam suam : Utinam fuisset dominus meus ad prophetam qui est in Samaria, profecto curasset eum a lepra quam habet.
Naaman went and told his master. 'This and this', he reported, 'is what the girl from Israel has said.'4 Ingressus est itaque Naaman ad dominum suum, et nuntiavit ei, dicens : Sic et sic locuta est puella de terra Israël.
'Go by al means,' said the king of Aram, 'I shal send a letter to the king of Israel.' So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten festal robes.5 Dixitque ei rex Syriæ : Vade, et mittam litteras ad regem Israël. Qui cum profectus esset, et tulisset secum decem talenta argenti, et sex millia aureos, et decem mutatoria vestimentorum,
He presented the letter to the king of Israel. It read, 'With this letter, I am sending my servant Naaman toyou for you to cure him of his skin-disease.'6 detulit litteras ad regem Israël in hæc verba : Cum acceperis epistolam hanc, scito quod miserim ad te Naaman servum meum, ut cures eum a lepra sua.
When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes. 'Am I a god to give death and life,' he said,'for him to send a man to me and ask me to cure him of his skin-disease? Listen to this and take note of it andsee how he intends to pick a quarrel with me.'7 Cumque legisset rex Israël litteras, scidit vestimenta sua, et ait : Numquid deus ego sum, ut occidere possim et vivificare, quia iste misit ad me ut curem hominem a lepra sua ? animadvertite, et videte quod occasiones quærat adversum me.
When Elisha heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent word to the king, 'Why have youtorn your clothes? Let him come to me, and he wil find there is a prophet in Israel.'8 Quod cum audisset Eliseus vir Dei, scidisse videlicet regem Israël vestimenta sua, misit ad eum, dicens : Quare scidisti vestimenta tua ? veniat ad me, et sciat esse prophetam in Israël.
So Naaman came with his team and chariot and drew up at the door of Elisha's house.9 Venit ergo Naaman cum equis et curribus, et stetit ad ostium domus Elisei :
And Elisha sent him a messenger to say, 'Go and bathe seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh wilbecome clean once more.'10 misitque ad eum Eliseus nuntium, dicens : Vade, et lavare septies in Jordane, et recipiet sanitatem caro tua, atque mundaberis.
But Naaman was indignant and went off, saying, 'Here was I, thinking he would be sure to come out tome, and stand there, and cal on the name of Yahweh his God, and wave his hand over the spot and cure thepart that was diseased.11 Iratus Naaman recedebat, dicens : Putabam quod egrederetur ad me, et stans invocaret nomen Domini Dei sui, et tangeret manu sua locum lepræ, et curaret me.
Surely, Abana and Parpar, the rivers of Damascus, are better than any water in Israel? Could I notbathe in them and become clean?' And he turned round and went off in a rage.12 Numquid non meliores sunt Abana et Pharphar fluvii Damasci, omnibus aquis Israël, ut laver in eis, et munder ? Cum ergo vertisset se, et abiret indignans,
But his servants approached him and said, 'Father, if the prophet had asked you to do somethingdifficult, would you not have done it? Al the more reason, then, when he says to you, "Bathe, and you wilbecome clean." '13 accesserunt ad eum servi sui, et locuti sunt ei : Pater, etsi rem grandem dixisset tibi propheta, certe facere debueras : quanto magis quia nunc dixit tibi : Lavare, et mundaberis ?
So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, as Elisha had told him to do. Andhis flesh became clean once more like the flesh of a little child.14 Descendit, et lavit in Jordane septies juxta sermonem viri Dei : et restituta est caro ejus sicut caro pueri parvuli, et mundatus est.
Returning to Elisha with his whole escort, he went in and, presenting himself, said, 'Now I know thatthere is no God anywhere on earth except in Israel. Now, please, accept a present from your servant.'15 Reversusque ad virum Dei cum universo comitatu suo, venit, et stetit coram eo, et ait : Vere scio quod non sit alius deus in universa terra, nisi tantum in Israël. Obsecro itaque ut accipias benedictionem a servo tuo.
But Elisha replied, 'As Yahweh lives, whom I serve, I wil accept nothing.' Naaman pressed him toaccept, but he refused.16 At ille respondit : Vivit Dominus, ante quem sto, quia non accipiam. Cumque vim faceret, penitus non acquievit.
Then Naaman said, 'Since your answer is "No," al ow your servant to be given as much earth as twomules may carry, since your servant wil no longer make burnt offerings or sacrifice to any god except Yahweh.17 Dixitque Naaman : Ut vis : sed, obsecro, concede mihi servo tuo ut tollam onus duorum burdonum de terra : non enim faciet ultra servus tuus holocaustum aut victimam diis alienis, nisi Domino.
Only -- and may Yahweh forgive your servant for this -- when my master goes to the temple of Rimmonto worship there, he leans on my arm, and I bow down in the temple of Rimmon when he does; may Yahwehforgive your servant for doing this!'18 Hoc autem solum est, de quo depreceris Dominum pro servo tuo, quando ingredietur dominus meus templum Remmon ut adoret : et illo innitente super manum meam, si adoravero in templo Remmon, adorante eo in eodem loco, ut ignoscat mihi Dominus servo tuo pro hac re.
'Go in peace,' Elisha replied.19 Qui dixit ei : Vade in pace. Abiit ergo ab eo electo terræ tempore.
Naaman had gone a smal distance, when Gehazi, Elisha's servant, said to himself, 'My master has letthis Aramaean Naaman off lightly, by not accepting what he offered. As Yahweh lives, I will run after him and getsomething out of him.'20 Dixitque Giezi puer viri Dei : Pepercit dominus meus Naaman Syro isti, ut non acciperet ab eo quæ attulit : vivit Dominus, quia curram post eum, et accipiam ab eo aliquid.
So Gehazi set off in pursuit of Naaman. When Naaman saw him running after him, he jumped downfrom his chariot to meet him. 'Is all well?' he asked.21 Et secutus est Giezi post tergum Naaman : quem cum vidisset ille currentem ad se, desiliit de curru in occursum ejus, et ait : Rectene sunt omnia ?
'All is well,' he said. 'My master has sent me to say, "This very moment two young men of the propheticbrotherhood have arrived from the highlands of Ephraim. Be kind enough to give them a talent of silver and twofestal robes." '22 Et ille ait : Recte. Dominus meus misit me ad te dicens : Modo venerunt ad me duo adolescentes de monte Ephraim, ex filiis prophetarum : da eis talentum argenti, et vestes mutatorias duplices.
'Please accept two talents,' Naaman replied, and pressed him, tying up the two talents of silver in twobags with the two festal robes and consigning them to two of his servants who carried them ahead of Gehazi.23 Dixitque Naaman : Melius est ut accipias duo talenta. Et coëgit eum, ligavitque duo talenta argenti in duobus saccis, et duplicia vestimenta, et imposuit duobus pueris suis, qui et portaverunt coram eo.
When he reached Ophel, he took these from them and put them away in the house. He then dismissedthe men, who went away.24 Cumque venisset jam vesperi, tulit de manu eorum, et reposuit in domo, dimisitque viros, et abierunt.
He, for his part, went and presented himself to his master. Elisha said, 'Gehazi, where have you been?''Your servant has not been anywhere,' he replied.25 Ipse autem ingressus, stetit coram domino suo. Et dixit Eliseus : Unde venis, Giezi ? Qui respondit : Non ivit servus tuus quoquam.
But Elisha said to him, 'Was not my heart present there when someone left his chariot to meet you?Now you have taken the money, you can buy gardens with it, and olive groves, sheep and oxen, male andfemale slaves.26 At ille ait : Nonne cor meum in præsenti erat, quando reversus est homo de curru suo in occursum tui ? nunc igitur accepisti argentum, et accepisti vestes ut emas oliveta, et vineas, et oves, et boves, et servos, et ancillas.
But Naaman's disease of the skin wil cling to you and your descendants for ever.' And Gehazi left hispresence white as snow from skin-disease.27 Sed et lepra Naaman adhærebit tibi, et semini tuo usque in sempiternum. Et egressus est ab eo leprosus quasi nix.
