1 Naaman, army commander to the king of Aram, was a man who enjoyed his master's respect andfavour, since through him Yahweh had granted victory to the Aramaeans.	1 Naaman était le général de l’armée du roi d’Aram. C’était un homme très estimé de son maître; il était son favori car c’est par lui que Yahvé avait donné la victoire aux Araméens. Mais cet homme de valeur était lépreux.
2 But the man suffered from a virulent skin-disease. Now, on one of their raids into Israelite territory, theAramaeans had carried off a little girl, who became a servant of Naaman's wife.	2 Or, au cours d’une sortie, les Araméens avaient ramené du pays d’Israël une adolescente qui entra au service de la femme de Naaman.
3 She said to her mistress, 'If only my master would approach the prophet of Samaria! He would cure himof his skin-disease.'	3 Elle dit à sa maîtresse: “Ah! Si mon maître allait trouver le prophète qui est à Samarie, il le délivrerait de sa lèpre.”
4 Naaman went and told his master. 'This and this', he reported, 'is what the girl from Israel has said.'	4 Naaman informa son maître, il lui dit: “Voici ce qu’a dit cette jeune fille qui vient du pays d’Israël.”
5 'Go by al means,' said the king of Aram, 'I shal send a letter to the king of Israel.' So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten festal robes.	5 Le roi d’Aram lui dit: “Va, pars! Je vais te donner une lettre pour le roi d’Israël.” Il se mit donc en route, prit avec lui 10 talents d’argent, 6 000 pièces d’or et 10 habits de rechange.
6 He presented the letter to the king of Israel. It read, 'With this letter, I am sending my servant Naaman toyou for you to cure him of his skin-disease.'	6 Il fit remettre au roi d’Israël la lettre dans laquelle il était écrit: “Avec cette lettre, je t’envoie mon serviteur Naaman pour que tu le délivres de sa lèpre.”
7 When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes. 'Am I a god to give death and life,' he said,'for him to send a man to me and ask me to cure him of his skin-disease? Listen to this and take note of it andsee how he intends to pick a quarrel with me.'	7 À la lecture de la lettre, le roi d’Israël déchira ses habits et dit: “Suis-je donc comme Dieu pour faire mourir ou revivre? Celui-là me fait demander d’enlever à quelqu’un sa lèpre! Regardez et dites-moi si ce n’est pas simplement pour me chercher querelle.”
8 When Elisha heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent word to the king, 'Why have youtorn your clothes? Let him come to me, and he wil find there is a prophet in Israel.'	8 Élisée, l’homme de Dieu, apprit que le roi d’Israël avait déchiré ses vêtements; il envoya dire au roi: “Pourquoi as-tu déchiré tes vêtements? Qu’il vienne vers moi et il saura qu’il y a un prophète en Israël!”
9 So Naaman came with his team and chariot and drew up at the door of Elisha's house.	9 Naaman vint donc avec ses chevaux et son char et se tint à la porte de la maison d’Élisée.
10 And Elisha sent him a messenger to say, 'Go and bathe seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh wilbecome clean once more.'	10 Élisée lui fit dire par un messager: “Va te baigner sept fois dans le Jourdain, ta chair redeviendra comme auparavant et tu seras guéri.”
11 But Naaman was indignant and went off, saying, 'Here was I, thinking he would be sure to come out tome, and stand there, and cal on the name of Yahweh his God, and wave his hand over the spot and cure thepart that was diseased.	11 Naaman se mit en colère et s’en alla; il disait: “Je pensais qu’il allait sortir en personne, qu’il invoquerait le nom de Yahvé son Dieu, qu’il frotterait de sa main l’endroit malade et me délivrerait de la lèpre.
12 Surely, Abana and Parpar, the rivers of Damascus, are better than any water in Israel? Could I notbathe in them and become clean?' And he turned round and went off in a rage.	12 Les fleuves de Damas, l’Abana et le Parpar, ne sont-ils pas meilleurs que toutes les eaux d’Israël? Il me suffirait donc de m’y laver pour guérir!” Très en colère il fit demi-tour pour s’en aller.
13 But his servants approached him and said, 'Father, if the prophet had asked you to do somethingdifficult, would you not have done it? Al the more reason, then, when he says to you, "Bathe, and you wilbecome clean." '	13 Alors ses serviteurs s’approchèrent et lui dirent: “Mon père, si le prophète t’avait demandé quelque chose de difficile, tu l’aurais fait? Pourquoi ne le fais-tu pas quand il te dit seulement: Lave-toi et tu seras guéri!”
14 So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, as Elisha had told him to do. Andhis flesh became clean once more like the flesh of a little child.	14 Il descendit donc et se plongea dans le Jourdain: sept fois, comme l’avait dit l’homme de Dieu. Et puis sa chair redevint comme la chair d’un petit enfant: il était guéri!
15 Returning to Elisha with his whole escort, he went in and, presenting himself, said, 'Now I know thatthere is no God anywhere on earth except in Israel. Now, please, accept a present from your servant.'	15 Alors il retourna chez l’homme de Dieu avec tous ses compagnons, il entra et se présenta devant lui: “Maintenant, dit-il, je sais qu’il n’y pas de Dieu sur toute la terre, sauf en Israël. Accepte donc ce présent de la part de ton serviteur.”
16 But Elisha replied, 'As Yahweh lives, whom I serve, I wil accept nothing.' Naaman pressed him toaccept, but he refused.	16 Élisée lui répondit: “Par la vie de Yahvé que je sers, je n’accepterai rien.” L’autre insista pour qu’il accepte, mais il refusa.
17 Then Naaman said, 'Since your answer is "No," al ow your servant to be given as much earth as twomules may carry, since your servant wil no longer make burnt offerings or sacrifice to any god except Yahweh.	17 Alors Naaman lui dit: “Bien! Mais j’aimerais au moins qu’on donne à ton serviteur de la terre, de quoi charger une paire de mulets, car désormais ton serviteur n’offrira plus de sacrifices ni d’holocaustes à d’autres dieux qu’à Yahvé.
18 Only -- and may Yahweh forgive your servant for this -- when my master goes to the temple of Rimmonto worship there, he leans on my arm, and I bow down in the temple of Rimmon when he does; may Yahwehforgive your servant for doing this!'	18 Cependant, que Yahvé pardonne ceci à ton serviteur: Lorsque mon maître entre dans le temple de Rimmon pour s’y prosterner, il s’appuie sur mon bras et je me prosterne avec lui dans le temple de Rimmon. Que Yahvé daigne donc pardonner cela à ton serviteur.”
19 'Go in peace,' Elisha replied.	19 Élisée lui dit: “Va en paix!” Il était déjà assez loin,
20 Naaman had gone a smal distance, when Gehazi, Elisha's servant, said to himself, 'My master has letthis Aramaean Naaman off lightly, by not accepting what he offered. As Yahweh lives, I will run after him and getsomething out of him.'	20 lorsque Guéhazi, le serviteur d’Élisée, se dit en lui même: “Mon maître a été trop discret envers cet Araméen. Penser qu’il n’a rien accepté de ce que Naaman avait apporté! Par la vie de Yahvé, si je peux le rattraper, j’en tirerai quelque chose.”
21 So Gehazi set off in pursuit of Naaman. When Naaman saw him running after him, he jumped downfrom his chariot to meet him. 'Is all well?' he asked.	21 Guéhazi se mit donc à la poursuite de Naaman, et Naaman l’aperçut qui courait derrière lui. Il sauta de son char et lui dit: “Tout va-t-il bien?”
22 'All is well,' he said. 'My master has sent me to say, "This very moment two young men of the propheticbrotherhood have arrived from the highlands of Ephraim. Be kind enough to give them a talent of silver and twofestal robes." '	22 Guéhazi répondit: “Tout va bien, mais mon maître m’a envoyé pour te dire: À l’instant, deux jeunes gens de la montagne d’Éphraïm, des frères prophètes, viennent d’arriver chez moi. Pourrais-tu me donner pour eux un talent d’argent et deux habits de rechange.”
23 'Please accept two talents,' Naaman replied, and pressed him, tying up the two talents of silver in twobags with the two festal robes and consigning them to two of his servants who carried them ahead of Gehazi.	23 Naaman insista: “Accepte donc deux talents.” Il le força d’accepter et serra deux talents d’argent dans deux sacs avec les deux habits de rechange, puis il les confia à deux de ses serviteurs pour qu’ils les portent devant Guéhazi.
24 When he reached Ophel, he took these from them and put them away in the house. He then dismissedthe men, who went away.	24 Lorsque Guéhazi arriva à l’Ophel, il prit le tout de leurs mains et le déposa dans la maison; il renvoya les hommes, et ceux-ci partirent.
25 He, for his part, went and presented himself to his master. Elisha said, 'Gehazi, where have you been?''Your servant has not been anywhere,' he replied.	25 Quant à lui, il rentra et se présenta devant son maître. Élisée lui dit: “D’où viens-tu, Guéhazi?” Il dit: “Ton serviteur est allé par-ci, par-là.”
26 But Elisha said to him, 'Was not my heart present there when someone left his chariot to meet you?Now you have taken the money, you can buy gardens with it, and olive groves, sheep and oxen, male andfemale slaves.	26 Élisée lui dit: “Mon esprit n’était-il pas avec toi lorsque cet homme a sauté de son char pour venir à ta rencontre? Te voilà donc avec l’argent, avec des vêtements, des oliviers, des vignes, des brebis, des bœufs, des serviteurs et des servantes!
27 But Naaman's disease of the skin wil cling to you and your descendants for ever.' And Gehazi left hispresence white as snow from skin-disease.	27 Et te voilà aussi avec la lèpre de Naaman: elle sera sur toi et sur ta famille pour toujours!” Et Guéhazi s’éloigna de lui avec une lèpre blanche comme la neige.
