NEW JERUSALEMSTUTTGARTENSIA-DELITZSCH
Al the tribes of Israel then came to David at Hebron and said, 'Look, we are your own flesh and bone.1 וַיָּבֹאוּ כָּל־שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־דָּוִד חֶבְרֹונָה וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֵאמֹר הִנְנוּ עַצְמְךָ וּבְשָׂרְךָ אֲנָחְנוּ
In days past when Saul was our king, it was you who led Israel on its campaigns, and to you it was thatYahweh promised, "You are to shepherd my people Israel and be leader of Israel."
So al the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a pact with them inYahweh's presence at Hebron, and they anointed David as king of Israel.3 וַיָּבֹאוּ כָּל־זִקְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְ חֶבְרֹונָה וַיִּכְרֹת לָהֶם הַמֶּלֶךְ דָּוִד בְּרִית בְּחֶבְרֹון לִפְנֵי יְהוָה וַיִּמְשְׁחוּ אֶת־דָּוִד לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ פ
David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years.4 בֶּן־שְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה דָּוִד בְּמָלְכֹו אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה מָלָךְ
In Hebron he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months; then he reigned in Jerusalem over allIsrael and Judah for thirty-three years.5 בְּחֶבְרֹון מָלַךְ עַל־יְהוּדָה שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים וְשִׁשָּׁה חֳדָשִׁים וּבִירוּשָׁלִַם מָלַךְ שְׁלֹשִׁים וְשָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנָה עַל כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוּדָה
The king and his men then marched on Jerusalem, on the Jebusites living in the territory. These said toDavid, 'You wil not get in here. The blind and the lame wil hold you off.' (That is to say: David will never get inhere.)6 וַיֵּלֶךְ הַמֶּלֶךְ וַאֲנָשָׁיו יְרוּשָׁלִַם אֶל־הַיְבֻסִי יֹושֵׁב הָאָרֶץ וַיֹּאמֶר לְדָוִד לֵאמֹר לֹא־תָבֹוא הֵנָּה כִּי אִם־הֱסִירְךָ הַעִוְרִים וְהַפִּסְחִים לֵאמֹר לֹא־יָבֹוא דָוִד הֵנָּה
But David captured the citadel of Zion, that is, the City of David.7
That day, David said, 'Whoever gets up the tunnel and kil s a Jebusite . . .' As for the blind and thelame, David hated them with his whole being. (Hence the saying: the blind and the lame may not enter theTemple.)8 וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד בַּיֹּום הַהוּא כָּל־מַכֵּה יְבֻסִי וְיִגַּע בַּצִּנֹּור וְאֶת־הַפִּסְחִים וְאֶת־הַעִוְרִים [שְׂנֹאו כ] (שְׂנֻאֵי ק) נֶפֶשׁ דָּוִד עַל־כֵּן יֹאמְרוּ עִוֵּר וּפִסֵּחַ לֹא יָבֹוא אֶל־הַבָּיִת
David went to live in the citadel and cal ed it the City of David. David then built a wal round it, from theMil o inwards.9 וַיֵּשֶׁב דָּוִד בַּמְּצֻדָה וַיִּקְרָא־לָהּ עִיר דָּוִד וַיִּבֶן דָּוִד סָבִיב מִן־הַמִּלֹּוא וָבָיְתָה
David grew stronger and stronger, and Yahweh, God of Sabaoth, was with him.10 וַיֵּלֶךְ דָּוִד הָלֹוךְ וְגָדֹול וַיהוָה אֱלֹהֵי צְבָאֹות עִמֹּו׃ פ
Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, with cedar wood, carpenters and stone-cutters, who builtDavid a palace.11 וַיִּשְׁלַח חִירָם מֶלֶךְ־צֹר מַלְאָכִים אֶל־דָּוִד וַעֲצֵי אֲרָזִים וְחָרָשֵׁי עֵץ וְחָרָשֵׁי אֶבֶן קִיר וַיִּבְנוּ־בַיִת לְדָוִד
David then knew that Yahweh had confirmed him as king of Israel and, for the sake of his peopleIsrael, had extended his sovereignty.12 וַיֵּדַע דָּוִד כִּי־הֱכִינֹו יְהוָה לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וְכִי נִשֵּׂא מַמְלַכְתֹּו בַּעֲבוּר עַמֹּו יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ ס
After coming from Hebron, David took other concubines and wives in Jerusalem, and sons anddaughters were born to him.13 וַיִּקַּח דָּוִד עֹוד פִּלַגְשִׁים וְנָשִׁים מִירוּשָׁלִַם אַחֲרֵי בֹּאֹו מֵחֶבְרֹון וַיִּוָּלְדוּ עֹוד לְדָוִד בָּנִים וּבָנֹות
These are the names of those born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,14
Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,15
Elishama, Eliada, Eliphelet.16
When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed as king of Israel, they all went up to seekhim out. On hearing this, David went down to the stronghold.17 וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים כִּי־מָשְׁחוּ אֶת־דָּוִד לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּעֲלוּ כָל־פְּלִשְׁתִּים לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת־דָּוִד וַיִּשְׁמַע דָּוִד וַיֵּרֶד אֶל־הַמְּצוּדָה
When the Philistines arrived, they deployed in the Val ey of the Rephaim.18
David consulted Yahweh and asked, 'Shal I attack the Philistines? Wil you deliver them into mypower?' Yahweh replied to David, 'Attack! I shal certainly deliver the Philistines into your power.'19 וַיִּשְׁאַל דָּוִד בַּיהוָה לֵאמֹר הַאֶעֱלֶה אֶל־פְּלִשְׁתִּים הֲתִתְּנֵם בְּיָדִי וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־דָּוִד עֲלֵה כִּי־נָתֹן אֶתֵּן אֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּים בְּיָדֶךָ
Accordingly, David went to Baal-Perazim and there David defeated them. He said, 'Yahweh has madea breach in my enemies for me, as though they had been breached by a flood.' This is why the place was giventhe name Baal-Perazim.20 וַיָּבֹא דָוִד בְּבַעַל־פְּרָצִים וַיַּכֵּם שָׁם דָּוִד וַיֹּאמֶר פָּרַץ יְהוָה אֶת־אֹיְבַי לְפָנַי כְּפֶרֶץ מָיִם עַל־כֵּן קָרָא שֵׁם־הַמָּקֹום הַהוּא בַּעַל פְּרָצִים
They had left their gods behind them there, and David and his men carried them off.21 וַיַּעַזְבוּ־שָׁם אֶת־עֲצַבֵּיהֶם וַיִּשָּׂאֵם דָּוִד וַאֲנָשָׁיו׃ פ
Again the Philistines invaded and deployed in the Valley of the Rephaim.22
David consulted Yahweh, who replied, 'Do not attack them from the front; go round to their rear andengage them opposite the balsam trees.23 וַיִּשְׁאַל דָּוִד בַּיהוָה וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא תַעֲלֶה הָסֵב אֶל־אַחֲרֵיהֶם וּבָאתָ לָהֶם מִמּוּל בְּכָאִים
When you hear the sound of footsteps in the tops of the balsam trees, advance, for that wil beYahweh going out ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.'24 וִיהִי [בְּשָׁמְעֲךָ כ] (כְּשָׁמְעֲךָ ק) אֶת־קֹול צְעָדָה בְּרָאשֵׁי הַבְּכָאִים אָז תֶּחֱרָץ כִּי אָז יָצָא יְהוָה לְפָנֶיךָ לְהַכֹּות בְּמַחֲנֵה פְלִשְׁתִּים
David did as Yahweh had ordered and beat the Philistines from Gibeon to the Pass of Gezer.25
