1 Al the tribes of Israel then came to David at Hebron and said, 'Look, we are your own flesh and bone.	1 ויבאו כל שבטי ישראל אל דוד חברונה ויאמרו לאמר הננו עצמך ובשרך אנחנו
2 In days past when Saul was our king, it was you who led Israel on its campaigns, and to you it was thatYahweh promised, "You are to shepherd my people Israel and be leader of Israel." '	2 גם אתמול גם שלשום בהיות שאול מלך עלינו אתה הייתה מוציא והמבי את ישראל ויאמר יהוה לך אתה תרעה את עמי את ישראל ואתה תהיה לנגיד על ישראל
3 So al the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a pact with them inYahweh's presence at Hebron, and they anointed David as king of Israel.	3 ויבאו כל זקני ישראל אל המלך חברונה ויכרת להם המלך דוד ברית בחברון לפני יהוה וימשחו את דוד למלך על ישראל
4 David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years.	4 בן שלשים שנה דוד במלכו ארבעים שנה מלך
5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months; then he reigned in Jerusalem over allIsrael and Judah for thirty-three years.	5 בחברון מלך על יהודה שבע שנים וששה חדשים ובירושלם מלך שלשים ושלש שנה על כל ישראל ויהודה
6 The king and his men then marched on Jerusalem, on the Jebusites living in the territory. These said toDavid, 'You wil not get in here. The blind and the lame wil hold you off.' (That is to say: David will never get inhere.)	6 וילך המלך ואנשיו ירושלם אל היבסי יושב הארץ ויאמר לדוד לאמר לא תבוא הנה כי אם הסירך העורים והפסחים לאמר לא יבוא דוד הנה
7 But David captured the citadel of Zion, that is, the City of David.	7 וילכד דוד את מצדת ציון היא עיר דוד
8 That day, David said, 'Whoever gets up the tunnel and kil s a Jebusite . . .' As for the blind and thelame, David hated them with his whole being. (Hence the saying: the blind and the lame may not enter theTemple.)	8 ויאמר דוד ביום ההוא כל מכה יבסי ויגע בצנור ואת הפסחים ואת העורים שנאו נפש דוד על כן יאמרו עור ופסח לא יבוא אל הבית
9 David went to live in the citadel and cal ed it the City of David. David then built a wal round it, from theMil o inwards.	9 וישב דוד במצדה ויקרא לה עיר דוד ויבן דוד סביב מן המלוא וביתה
10 David grew stronger and stronger, and Yahweh, God of Sabaoth, was with him.	10 וילך דוד הלוך וגדול ויהוה אלהי צבאות עמו
11 Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, with cedar wood, carpenters and stone-cutters, who builtDavid a palace.	11 וישלח חירם מלך צר מלאכים אל דוד ועצי ארזים וחרשי עץ וחרשי אבן קיר ויבנו בית לדוד
12 David then knew that Yahweh had confirmed him as king of Israel and, for the sake of his peopleIsrael, had extended his sovereignty.	12 וידע דוד כי הכינו יהוה למלך על ישראל וכי נשא ממלכתו בעבור עמו ישראל
13 After coming from Hebron, David took other concubines and wives in Jerusalem, and sons anddaughters were born to him.	13 ויקח דוד עוד פלגשים ונשים מירושלם אחרי באו מחברון ויולדו עוד לדוד בנים ובנות
14 These are the names of those born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,	14 ואלה שמות הילדים לו בירושלם שמוע ושובב ונתן ושלמה
15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,	15 ויבחר ואלישוע ונפג ויפיע
16 Elishama, Eliada, Eliphelet.	16 ואלישמע ואלידע ואליפלט
17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed as king of Israel, they all went up to seekhim out. On hearing this, David went down to the stronghold.	17 וישמעו פלשתים כי משחו את דוד למלך על ישראל ויעלו כל פלשתים לבקש את דוד וישמע דוד וירד אל המצודה
18 When the Philistines arrived, they deployed in the Val ey of the Rephaim.	18 ופלשתים באו וינטשו בעמק רפאים
19 David consulted Yahweh and asked, 'Shal I attack the Philistines? Wil you deliver them into mypower?' Yahweh replied to David, 'Attack! I shal certainly deliver the Philistines into your power.'	19 וישאל דוד ביהוה לאמר האעלה אל פלשתים התתנם בידי ויאמר יהוה אל דוד עלה כי נתן אתן את הפלשתים בידך
20 Accordingly, David went to Baal-Perazim and there David defeated them. He said, 'Yahweh has madea breach in my enemies for me, as though they had been breached by a flood.' This is why the place was giventhe name Baal-Perazim.	20 ויבא דוד בבעל פרצים ויכם שם דוד ויאמר פרץ יהוה את איבי לפני כפרץ מים על כן קרא שם המקום ההוא בעל פרצים
21 They had left their gods behind them there, and David and his men carried them off.	21 ויעזבו שם את עצביהם וישאם דוד ואנשיו
22 Again the Philistines invaded and deployed in the Valley of the Rephaim.	22 ויספו עוד פלשתים לעלות וינטשו בעמק רפאים
23 David consulted Yahweh, who replied, 'Do not attack them from the front; go round to their rear andengage them opposite the balsam trees.	23 וישאל דוד ביהוה ויאמר לא תעלה הסב אל אחריהם ובאת להם ממול בכאים
24 When you hear the sound of footsteps in the tops of the balsam trees, advance, for that wil beYahweh going out ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.'	24 ויהי בשמעך את קול צעדה בראשי הבכאים אז תחרץ כי אז יצא יהוה לפניך להכות במחנה פלשתים
25 David did as Yahweh had ordered and beat the Philistines from Gibeon to the Pass of Gezer.	25 ויעש דוד כן כאשר צוהו יהוה ויך את פלשתים מגבע עד באך גזר
