NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Thus heaven and earth were completed with al their array.1 Igitur perfecti sunt caeli et terra et omnis exercitus eorum.
On the seventh day God had completed the work he had been doing. He rested on the seventh dayafter al the work he had been doing.2 Complevitque Deus die septimo opus suum, quod fecerat, et requievit die septimo ab universo opere, quod patrarat.
God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he rested after al his work ofcreating.3 Et benedixit Deus diei septimo et sanctificavit illum, quia in ipso requieverat ab omni opere suo, quod creavit Deus, ut faceret.
Such was the story of heaven and earth as they were created. At the time when Yahweh God madeearth and heaven4 Istae sunt generationes caeli et terrae, quando creata sunt.
In die quo fecit Dominus Deus terram et caelum
there was as yet no wild bush on the earth nor had any wild plant yet sprung up, for Yahweh God hadnot sent rain on the earth, nor was there any man to til the soil.5 omne virgultum agri, antequam oriretur in terra, omnisque herba regionis, priusquam germinaret; non enim pluerat Dominus Deus super terram, et homo non erat, qui operaretur humum,
Instead, water flowed out of the ground and watered al the surface of the soil.6 sed fons ascendebat e terra irrigans universam superficiem terrae
Yahweh God shaped man from the soil of the ground and blew the breath of life into his nostrils, andman became a living being.7 tunc formavit Dominus Deus hominem pulverem de humo et inspiravit in nares eius spiraculum vitae, et factus est homo in animam viventem.
Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden, which is in the east, and there he put the man he hadfashioned.8 Et plantavit Dominus Deus paradisum in Eden ad orientem, in quo posuit hominem, quem formaverat.
From the soil, Yahweh God caused to grow every kind of tree, enticing to look at and good to eat, withthe tree of life in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.9 Produxitque Dominus Deus de humo omne lignum pulchrum visu et ad vescendum suave, lignum etiam vitae in medio paradisi lignumque scientiae boni et mali.
A river flowed from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided to make four streams.10 Et fluvius egrediebatur ex Eden ad irrigandum paradisum, qui inde dividitur in quattuor capita.
The first is named the Pishon, and this winds al through the land of Havilah where there is gold.11 Nomen uni Phison: ipse est, qui circuit omnem terram Hevila, ubi est aurum;
The gold of this country is pure; bdel ium and cornelian stone are found there.12 et aurum terrae illius optimum est; ibi invenitur bdellium et lapis onychinus.
The second river is named the Gihon, and this winds all through the land of Cush.13 Et nomen fluvio secundo Geon: ipse est, qui circuit omnem terram Aethiopiae.
The third river is named the Tigris, and this flows to the east of Ashur. The fourth river is theEuphrates.14 Nomen vero fluminis tertii Tigris: ipse vadit ad orientem Assyriae. Fluvius autem quartus ipse est Euphrates.
Yahweh God took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden to cultivate and take care of it.15 Tulit ergo Dominus Deus hominem et posuit eum in paradiso Eden, ut operaretur et custodiret illum;
Then Yahweh God gave the man this command, 'You are free to eat of al the trees in the garden.16 praecepitque Dominus Deus homini dicens: “Ex omni ligno paradisi comede;
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you are not to eat; for, the day you eat of that, youare doomed to die.'17 de ligno autem scientiae boni et mali ne comedas; in quocumque enim die comederis ex eo, morte morieris”.
Yahweh God said, 'It is not right that the man should be alone. I shal make him a helper.'18 Dixit quoque Dominus Deus: “Non est bonum esse hominem solum; faciam ei adiutorium simile sui”.
So from the soil Yahweh God fashioned al the wild animals and al the birds of heaven. These hebrought to the man to see what he would call them; each one was to bear the name the man would give it.19 Formatis igitur Dominus Deus de humo cunctis animantibus agri et universis volatilibus caeli, adduxit ea ad Adam, ut videret quid vocaret ea; omne enim, quod vocavit Adam animae viventis, ipsum est nomen eius.
The man gave names to al the cattle, al the birds of heaven and all the wild animals. But no helpersuitable for the man was found for him.20 Appellavitque Adam nominibus suis cuncta pecora et universa volatilia caeli et omnes bestias agri; Adae vero non inveniebatur adiutor similis eius.
Then, Yahweh God made the man fal into a deep sleep. And, while he was asleep, he took one of hisribs and closed the flesh up again forthwith.21 Immisit ergo Dominus Deus soporem in Adam. Cumque obdormisset, tulit unam de costis eius et replevit carnem pro ea;
Yahweh God fashioned the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man.22 et aedificavit Dominus Deus costam, quam tulerat de Adam, in mulierem et adduxit eam ad Adam.
And the man said: This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh! She is to be cal edWoman, because she was taken from Man.23 Dixitque Adam:
“Haec nunc os ex ossibus meis
et caro de carne mea!
Haec vocabitur Virago,
quoniam de viro sumpta est haec”.
This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and they becomeone flesh.24 Quam ob rem relinquet vir patrem suum et matrem et adhaerebit uxori suae; et erunt in carnem unam.
Now, both of them were naked, the man and his wife, but they felt no shame before each other.25 Erant autem uterque nudi, Adam scilicet et uxor eius, et non erubescebant.
