1 Thus heaven and earth were completed with al their array.	1 C’est ainsi que le ciel et la terre et tout ce qu’ils contiennent furent achevés.
2 On the seventh day God had completed the work he had been doing. He rested on the seventh dayafter al the work he had been doing.	2 Au septième jour Dieu avait achevé son travail, et il se reposa en ce septième jour après tout le travail qu’il avait fait.
3 God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he rested after al his work ofcreating.	3 Dieu bénit le septième jour et il en fit un jour saint, parce que ce jour-là Dieu s’était arrêté de travailler, après toute cette création qu’il avait faite.
4 Such was the story of heaven and earth as they were created. At the time when Yahweh God madeearth and heaven	4 Voilà l’origine du ciel et de la terre lorsqu’ils furent créés. Le jour où Yahvé Dieu fit la terre et le ciel,
5 there was as yet no wild bush on the earth nor had any wild plant yet sprung up, for Yahweh God hadnot sent rain on the earth, nor was there any man to til the soil.	5 il n’y avait sur la terre aucun arbuste des champs; aucune herbe des champs ne poussait encore, car Yahvé Dieu n’avait pas fait pleuvoir sur la terre et il n’y avait pas d’homme pour travailler le sol
6 Instead, water flowed out of the ground and watered al the surface of the soil.	6 et faire monter l’eau de la terre, afin d’irriguer toute la surface du sol.
7 Yahweh God shaped man from the soil of the ground and blew the breath of life into his nostrils, andman became a living being.	7 Alors Yahvé Dieu forma l’homme; il n’était que poussière du sol, mais Dieu souffla dans ses narines une haleine de vie, et l’homme fut un être animé, vivant.
8 Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden, which is in the east, and there he put the man he hadfashioned.	8 Yahvé Dieu planta un jardin en Éden, à l’Orient, et il y plaça l’homme qu’il avait formé.
9 From the soil, Yahweh God caused to grow every kind of tree, enticing to look at and good to eat, withthe tree of life in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.	9 Yahvé Dieu fit pousser du sol toutes sortes d’arbres agréables à voir et bons à manger; l’arbre de vie était au milieu du jardin, avec l’arbre qui donne la connaissance du bien et du mal.
10 A river flowed from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided to make four streams.	10 D’Éden sortait un fleuve qui arrosait le jardin et se divisait ensuite pour former quatre bras.
11 The first is named the Pishon, and this winds al through the land of Havilah where there is gold.	11 Le premier s’appelle le Pichon: il entoure tout le pays de Havila où l’on trouve de l’or,
12 The gold of this country is pure; bdel ium and cornelian stone are found there.	12 un or très pur; on y trouve encore des résines parfumées et des pierres précieuses.
13 The second river is named the Gihon, and this winds all through the land of Cush.	13 Le deuxième s’appelle le Guihon: il entoure tout le pays de Kouch.
14 The third river is named the Tigris, and this flows to the east of Ashur. The fourth river is theEuphrates.	14 Le troisième s’appelle le Tigre: il coule à l’est de l’Assyrie. Le quatrième, c’est l’Euphrate.
15 Yahweh God took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden to cultivate and take care of it.	15 Yahvé Dieu plaça l’homme dans le jardin d’Éden pour le cultiver et le garder.
16 Then Yahweh God gave the man this command, 'You are free to eat of al the trees in the garden.	16 Puis Yahvé Dieu donna à l’homme un ordre, il lui dit: “Tu mangeras tant que tu voudras de tous les arbres du jardin,
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you are not to eat; for, the day you eat of that, youare doomed to die.'	17 mais tu ne mangeras pas de l’arbre de la connaissance du bien et du mal, car le jour où tu en mangeras, ce sera la mort à coup sûr!”
18 Yahweh God said, 'It is not right that the man should be alone. I shal make him a helper.'	18 Yahvé Dieu dit: “Il n’est pas bon que l’homme soit seul, je veux lui faire une aide semblable à lui.”
19 So from the soil Yahweh God fashioned al the wild animals and al the birds of heaven. These hebrought to the man to see what he would call them; each one was to bear the name the man would give it.	19 Alors Yahvé Dieu forma du sol toutes les bêtes sauvages et tous les oiseaux du ciel; il les conduisit vers l’homme pour voir quel nom il leur donnerait, pour que tout animal porte le nom que l’homme allait lui donner.
20 The man gave names to al the cattle, al the birds of heaven and all the wild animals. But no helpersuitable for the man was found for him.	20 L’homme donna des noms à tous les animaux des champs, aux oiseaux des cieux, à toutes les bêtes sauvages, mais pour l’homme il ne se trouva pas d’aide qui lui corresponde.
21 Then, Yahweh God made the man fal into a deep sleep. And, while he was asleep, he took one of hisribs and closed the flesh up again forthwith.	21 Yahvé Dieu fit alors tomber sur l’homme un profond sommeil pour qu’il s’endorme, il prit une de ses côtes et referma la chair à sa place.
22 Yahweh God fashioned the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man.	22 Avec la côte qu’il avait prise à l’homme, Yahvé Dieu fit une femme, et il vint la présenter à l’homme.
23 And the man said: This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh! She is to be cal edWoman, because she was taken from Man.	23 L’homme déclara: “Voici enfin l’os de mes os et la chair de ma chair, elle sera appelée femme parce qu’elle a été tirée de l’homme.”
24 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and they becomeone flesh.	24 C’est pourquoi l’homme quitte son père et sa mère, il s’attache à sa femme et ils ne font qu’une seule chair.
25 Now, both of them were naked, the man and his wife, but they felt no shame before each other.	25 Or ils étaient nus tous les deux, l’homme et sa femme, et ils n’en avaient point honte.
