Sirach 41

1 O death! how bitter the thought of you for the man at peace amid his possessions, For the man unruffled and always successful, who still can enjoy life's pleasures.	1 - O morte, quant'è amaro il tuo ricordo all'uomo che vive in pace tra le sue ricchezze,
2 O death! how welcome your sentence to the weak man of failing strength, Tottering and always rebuffed, with no more sight, with vanished hope.	2 all'uomo tranquillo, cui tutto va a seconda, e ch'è ancora in forze da provare il piacere!
3 Fear not death's decree for you; remember, it embraces those before you, and those after.	3 O morte, gradito è il tuo decreto all'uomo miserabile e privo di forze:
4 Thus God has ordained for all flesh; why then should you reject the will of the Most High? Whether one has lived a thousand years, a hundred, or ten, in the nether world he has no claim on life.	4 al vecchio decrepito e pieno d'affanni, e sfiduciato e che ha perduta la pazienza.
5 A reprobate line are the children of sinners, and witless offspring are in the homes of the wicked.	5 Non temere il decreto di morte: ricorda ciò che accadde prima di te e ciò che avverrà dopo. Tale decreto [fu stabilito] dal Signore per ogni vivente:
6 Their dominion is lost to sinners' children, and reproach abides with their descendants.	6 e a che ricalcitrerai tu contro il beneplacito dell'Altissimo? Sia dieci, sia cento, sia mille anni [che tu abbia vissuto].
7 Children curse their wicked father, for they suffer disgrace through him.	7 non c'è recriminazioni nell'averno sulla [lunghezza della] vita!
8 Woe to you, O sinful men, who forsake the law of the Most High.	8 Figliuoli abominevoli sono i figliuoli dei peccatori, e quei che bazzican le case degli empi.
9 If you have children, calamity will seize them; you will beget them only for groaning. When you stumble, there is lasting joy; at death, you become a curse.	9 De' figliuoli de' peccatori va in malora l'eredità, e nella loro stirpe si perpetua l'obbrobrio.
10 Whatever is of nought returns to nought, so too the godless from void to void.	10 Di un padre empio si lamentano i figliuoli, perchè a cagion di lui son nell'ignominia.
11 Man's body is a fleeting thing, but a virtuous name will never be annihilated.	11 Guai a voi, uomini empi, che avete abbandonato la legge del Signore Altissimo.
12 Have a care for your name, for it will stand by you better than precious treasures in the thousands;	12 Quando siete nati, siete nati per la maledizione, e quando morrete, la maledizione sarà la vostra eredità.
13 The boon of life is for limited days, but a good name, for days without number.	13 Tutto quanto vien dalla terra, ritorna alla terra; cosi gli empi [van] dalla maledizione alla perdizione.
14 My children, heed my instruction about shame; judge of disgrace only according to my rules, For it is not always well to be ashamed, nor is it always the proper thing to blush:	14 Il lutto degli uomini è per i loro cadaveri; ma il tristo nome degli empi sarà scancellato.
15 Before father and mother be ashamed of immorality, before master and mistress, of falsehood;	15 Abbi cura del buon nome, perchè più [sicuramente] ti resterà che mille preziosi e grandi tesori.
16 Before prince and ruler, of flattery; before the public assembly, of crime;	16 Della buona vita si contano i giorni ma il buon nome dura in eterno.
17 Before friend and companion, of disloyalty, and of breaking an oath or agreement.	17 istruzione conservate in pace, figliuoli. La sapienza nascosta e il tesoro invisibile, che utilità hanno l'una e l'altro?
18 Be ashamed of theft from the people where you settle, and of stretching out your elbow when you dine;	18 Meglio chi nasconde la sua stoltezza, che chi nasconde la sua sapienza.
19 Of refusing to give when asked, of defrauding another of his appointed share,	19 Pertanto abbiate rossore di ciò che vi dirò.
20 Of failing to return a greeting, and of rebuffing a friend;	20 Perchè non ogni rossore è bene coltivare, e non ogni cosa è approvata da tutti secondo verità.
21 Of gazing at a married woman, and of entertaining thoughts about another's wife; Of trifling with a servant girl you have, and of violating her couch;	21 Vergognatevi dell'impudicizia dinanzi al padre e alla madre, e della menzogna dinanzi al principe e al potente;
22 Of using harsh words with friends, and of following up your gifts with insults;	22 del reato dinanzi al magistrato e al giudice, e della trasgressione dinanzi all'adunanza e al popolo;
23 Of repeating what you hear, and of betraying secrets--	23 dell'ingiustizia dinanzi al compagno e all'amico, e del furto dinanzi al paese dove dimori,
24 These are the things you should rightly avoid as shameful if you would be looked upon by everyone with favor.	24 di [romper] la fedeltà a Dio e il patto, e d'appoggiare il gomito sul pane; d'esser vituperato per il dare e ricevere,
	25 e di non rispondere a chi saluta; di guardare una donna pubblica e di torcere il volto da un parente;
	26 di toglier la parte [d'altri] e non restituire,
	27 e di posar lo sguardo sulla donna d'altri; di scrutare indiscretamente la sua serva, e d'accostarti al suo letto;
	28 delle parole ingiuriose dinanzi agli amici, e di rinfacciare un dono che tu abbia fatto;
