Sirach 41

1 O death! how bitter the thought of you for the man at peace amid his possessions, For the man unruffled and always successful, who still can enjoy life's pleasures.	1 O morte, come è amaro il tuo pensiero per l'uomo che vive sereno nella sua agiatezza, per l'uomo senza assilli e fortunato in tutto, ancora in grado di gustare il cibo!
2 O death! how welcome your sentence to the weak man of failing strength, Tottering and always rebuffed, with no more sight, with vanished hope.	2 O morte, è gradita la tua sentenza all'uomo indigente e privo di forze, vecchio decrepito e preoccupato di tutto, al ribelle che ha perduto la pazienza!
3 Fear not death's decree for you; remember, it embraces those before you, and those after.	3 Non temere la sentenza della morte, ricòrdati dei tuoi predecessori e successori.
4 Thus God has ordained for all flesh; why then should you reject the will of the Most High? Whether one has lived a thousand years, a hundred, or ten, in the nether world he has no claim on life.	4 Questo è il decreto del Signore per ogni uomo; perché ribellarsi al volere dell'Altissimo? Siano dieci, cento, mille anni; negli inferi non ci sono recriminazioni sulla vita.
5 A reprobate line are the children of sinners, and witless offspring are in the homes of the wicked.	5 Figli abominevoli sono i figli dei peccatori, una stirpe empia è nella dimora dei malvagi.
6 Their dominion is lost to sinners' children, and reproach abides with their descendants.	6 L'eredità dei figli dei peccatori andrà in rovina, con la loro discendenza continuerà il disonore.
7 Children curse their wicked father, for they suffer disgrace through him.	7 Contro un padre empio imprecano i figli, perché sono disprezzati a causa sua.
8 Woe to you, O sinful men, who forsake the law of the Most High.	8 Guai a voi, uomini empi, che avete abbandonato la legge di Dio altissimo!
9 If you have children, calamity will seize them; you will beget them only for groaning. When you stumble, there is lasting joy; at death, you become a curse.	9 Quando nascete, nascete per la maledizione; quando morite, erediterete la maledizione.
10 Whatever is of nought returns to nought, so too the godless from void to void.	10 Quanto è dalla terra ritornerà alla terra, così gli empi dalla maledizione alla distruzione.
11 Man's body is a fleeting thing, but a virtuous name will never be annihilated.	11 Il lutto degli uomini riguarda i loro cadaveri, il nome non buono dei peccatori sarà cancellato.
12 Have a care for your name, for it will stand by you better than precious treasures in the thousands;	12 Abbi cura del nome, perché esso ti resterà più di mille grandi tesori d'oro.
13 The boon of life is for limited days, but a good name, for days without number.	13 I giorni di una vita felice sono contati, ma un buon nome dura sempre.
14 My children, heed my instruction about shame; judge of disgrace only according to my rules, For it is not always well to be ashamed, nor is it always the proper thing to blush:	14 Figli, custodite l'istruzione in pace; ma sapienza nascosta e tesoro invisibile, l'una e l'altro a che servono?
15 Before father and mother be ashamed of immorality, before master and mistress, of falsehood;	15 Meglio chi nasconde la sua stoltezza di chi nasconde la sua sapienza.
16 Before prince and ruler, of flattery; before the public assembly, of crime;	16 Pertanto provate vergogna in vista della mia parola, perché non è bene arrossire per qualsiasi vergogna; non tutti stimano secondo verità tutte le cose.
17 Before friend and companion, of disloyalty, and of breaking an oath or agreement.	17 Vergognatevi della prostituzione davanti al padre e alla madre della menzogna davanti a un capo e a un potente,
18 Be ashamed of theft from the people where you settle, and of stretching out your elbow when you dine;	18 del delitto davanti a un giudice e a un magistrato, dell'empietà davanti all'assemblea del popolo,
19 Of refusing to give when asked, of defrauding another of his appointed share,	19 della slealtà davanti al compagno e all'amico, del furto nell'ambiente in cui ti trovi,
20 Of failing to return a greeting, and of rebuffing a friend;	20 di venir meno al giuramento e all'alleanza, di piegare i gomiti sul pane,
21 Of gazing at a married woman, and of entertaining thoughts about another's wife; Of trifling with a servant girl you have, and of violating her couch;	21 del disprezzo di ciò che prendi o che ti è dato, di non rispondere a quanti salutano,
22 Of using harsh words with friends, and of following up your gifts with insults;	22 dello sguardo su una donna scostumata, del rifiuto fatto a un parente,
23 Of repeating what you hear, and of betraying secrets--	23 dell'appropriazione di eredità o donazione, del desiderio per una donna sposata,
24 These are the things you should rightly avoid as shameful if you would be looked upon by everyone with favor.	24 della relazione con la sua schiava, - non accostarti al suo letto -
	25 delle parole ingiuriose davanti agli amici - dopo aver donato, non offendere -
	26 della ripetizione di quanto hai udito e della rivelazione di notizie segrete.
	27 Allora sarai veramente pudico e troverai grazia presso chiunque.
