Sirach 41

1 O death! how bitter the thought of you for the man at peace amid his possessions, For the man unruffled and always successful, who still can enjoy life's pleasures.	1 O morte quanto e amara la tua ricordanza per un uomo, che in pace vive tra le sue ricchezze;
2 O death! how welcome your sentence to the weak man of failing strength, Tottering and always rebuffed, with no more sight, with vanished hope.	2 Per un uomo tranquillo, e a cui tutto riesce felicemente, ed il quale può ancora gustare il cibo!
3 Fear not death's decree for you; remember, it embraces those before you, and those after.	3 O morte, la tua sentenza è dolce all'uomo meschino, e privo di forze,
4 Thus God has ordained for all flesh; why then should you reject the will of the Most High? Whether one has lived a thousand years, a hundred, or ten, in the nether world he has no claim on life.	4 Spossato dall'età, e pieno di cure, e senza speranza, ed a cui manca lapazienza!
5 A reprobate line are the children of sinners, and witless offspring are in the homes of the wicked.	5 Non temere la sentenza della morte. Ricordati di quello, che fu prima di te, e di quello, che sarà dopo di te: questa è la sentenza data da Dio a tutti gli animali:
6 Their dominion is lost to sinners' children, and reproach abides with their descendants.	6 E che ti verrà aggiunto oltre la sentenza dell'Altissimo, siano essi o dieci, o cento, o mille i tuoi anni?
7 Children curse their wicked father, for they suffer disgrace through him.	7 Perocché nell'inferno non si conta quel, che uno ha vissuto.
8 Woe to you, O sinful men, who forsake the law of the Most High.	8 I figliuoli de' peccatori sono figliuoli di abominazione, e similmente quelli, che bazzicano per le case degli empj.
9 If you have children, calamity will seize them; you will beget them only for groaning. When you stumble, there is lasting joy; at death, you become a curse.	9 L'eredità de' figliuoli de' peccatori va in perdizione, e l'obbrobrio accompagnerà di continuo i loro posteri.
10 Whatever is of nought returns to nought, so too the godless from void to void.	10 I figliuoli dell'empio si querelano del loro padre, per colpa del quale vivono nell'ignominia.
11 Man's body is a fleeting thing, but a virtuous name will never be annihilated.	11 Guai a voi uomini empj, che avete abbandonata la legge dell'Altissimo.
12 Have a care for your name, for it will stand by you better than precious treasures in the thousands;	12 Quando voi nascerete, nella maledizione nascerete, e quando morrete, la maledizione avrete per vostro retaggio.
13 The boon of life is for limited days, but a good name, for days without number.	13 Tutto quello, che vien dalla terra, tornerà nella terra; cosi gli empj dalla maledizione anderanno alla perdizione.
14 My children, heed my instruction about shame; judge of disgrace only according to my rules, For it is not always well to be ashamed, nor is it always the proper thing to blush:	14 Gli uomini fanno lutto sopra i loro cadaveri; ma il nome degli empj sarà scancellato.
15 Before father and mother be ashamed of immorality, before master and mistress, of falsehood;	15 Tien conto del buon nome; perocché questo sarà tuo più stabilmente, che mille tesori preziosi, e grandi.
16 Before prince and ruler, of flattery; before the public assembly, of crime;	16 I giorni della buona vita si contano, ma il buon nome dura eternamente.
17 Before friend and companion, of disloyalty, and of breaking an oath or agreement.	17 Figliuoli, conservate nella pace i i documenti, perocché la sapienza nascosta, è un tesoro, che non si vede, a che giovano l'uno, e l'altra.
18 Be ashamed of theft from the people where you settle, and of stretching out your elbow when you dine;	18 E più stimabile colui, che nasconde la propria stoltezza, che chi nasconde la sua saggezza.
19 Of refusing to give when asked, of defrauding another of his appointed share,	19 Or voi abbiate rossore delle cose, che io vi dirò:
20 Of failing to return a greeting, and of rebuffing a friend;	20 Imperocché non è bene di arrossire per qualunque cosa; e non tutte le cose ben fatte piacciono a tutti.
21 Of gazing at a married woman, and of entertaining thoughts about another's wife; Of trifling with a servant girl you have, and of violating her couch;	21 Vergognatevi della fornicazione dinanzi al padre, e alla madre; della menzogna dinanzi al governatore, e all'uomo potente:
22 Of using harsh words with friends, and of following up your gifts with insults;	22 Della colpa dinanzi al principe, e al giudice; dell'iniquità dinanzi all'adunanza, e dinanzi al popolo:
23 Of repeating what you hear, and of betraying secrets--	23 Dell'ingiustizia dinanzi al compagno, e amico, e del furto dinanzi alla gente del luogo, dove abiti,
24 These are the things you should rightly avoid as shameful if you would be looked upon by everyone with favor.	24 Per riguardo alla verità di Dio, ed alla legge. Vergognati di mettere il gomito sul pane, e di non tener chiaro il libro del dare, e dell'avere:
	25 Vergognati di tacere con quelli, che ti salutano: di gettargli occhi sopra una donna impudica; e di non guardar in viso il parente.
	26 Non volgere altrove la faccia per non vedere il tuo prossimo. Vergognati di togliere altrui la sua parte, e di non restituire:
	27 Non guardar in faccia la donna altrui, e non tentare la sua serva, e non accostarti al suo letto.
	28 Cogli amici guardati dalle parole ingiuriose: e se hai fatto alcun dono, noi rimproverare.
