NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
1 Children, pay heed to a father's right; do so that you may live.1 Filii sapientiae ecclesia iustorum,
et natio illorum oboedientia et dilectio.
2 For the LORD sets a father in honor over his children; a mother's authority he confirms over her sons.2 Indicium patris audite, filii,
et sic facite, ut salvi sitis.
3 He who honors his father atones for sins;3 Deus enim honoravit patrem in filiis
et iudicium matris firmavit in filios.
4 he stores up riches who reveres his mother.4 Qui honorat patrem, exorabit pro peccatis
et continebit se ab illis
et in oratione dierum exaudietur.
5 He who honors his father is gladdened by children, and when he prays he is heard.5 Et, sicut qui thesaurizat,
ita et qui honorificat matrem suam.
6 He who reveres his father will live a long life; he obeys the LORD who brings comfort to his mother.6 Qui honorat patrem suum, iucundabitur in filiis
et in die orationis suae exaudietur;
7 He who fears the LORD honors his father, and serves his parents as rulers.7 qui honorat patrem suum, vita vivet longiore,
et, qui oboedit patri, refrigerabit matrem.
8 In word and deed honor your father that his blessing may come upon you;8 Qui timet Dominum, honorat parentes
et quasi dominis serviet his, qui se genuerunt.
9 For a father's blessing gives a family firm roots, but a mother's curse uproots the growing plant.9 In opere et sermone honora patrem tuum,
10 Glory not in your father's shame, for his shame is no glory to you!10 ut superveniat tibi benedictio ab eo.
11 His father's honor is a man's glory; disgrace for her children, a mother's shame.11 Benedictio patris firmat domos filiorum;
maledictio autem matris eradicat fundamenta.
12 My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives.12 Ne glorieris in contumelia patris tui,
non est enim tibi gloria eius confusio;
13 Even if his mind fail, be considerate with him; revile him not in the fullness of your strength.13 gloria enim hominis ex honore patris sui,
et dedecus filii mater sine honore.
14 For kindness to a father will not be forgotten, it will serve as a sin offering--it will take lasting root.14 Fili, suscipe senectam patris tui
et non contristes eum in vita illius;
15 In time of tribulation it will be recalled to your advantage, like warmth upon frost it will melt away your sins.15 et, si defecerit sensu, veniam da
et ne spernas eum omnibus diebus vitae eius.
Eleemosyna enim patris non erit in oblivione,
16 A blasphemer is he who despises his father; accursed of his Creator, he who angers his mother.16 nam pro peccatis ipsa plantabitur
17 My son, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.17 et in iustitia aedificabitur tibi;
et in die tribulationis commemorabitur tui,
et sicut in sereno glacies solventur tua peccata.
18 Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God.18 Quam malae famae est, qui derelinquit patrem;
et maledictus a Deo, qui exasperat matrem.
19 For great is the power of God; by the humble he is glorified.19 Fili, in mansuetudine opera tua perfice
et super hominem datorem diligeris.
20 What is too sublime for you, seek not, into things beyond your strength search not.20 Quanto magnus es, humilia te in omnibus
et coram Deo invenies gratiam.
Multi sunt excelsi et gloriosi,
sed mansuetis revelat mysteria sua.
21 What is committed to you, attend to; for what is hidden is not your concern.21 Quoniam magna potentia Dei solius,
et ab humilibus honoratur.
22 With what is too much for you meddle not, when shown things beyond human understanding.22 Altiora te ne quaesieris
et fortiora te ne scrutatus fueris;
sed, quae praecepit tibi Deus, illa cogita semper
et in pluribus operibus eius ne fueris curiosus.
23 Their own opinion has misled many, and false reasoning unbalanced their judgment.23 Non est enim tibi necessarium
ea, quae abscondita sunt, videre oculis tuis.
24 Where the pupil of the eye is missing, there is no light, and where there is no knowledge, there is no wisdom.24 In supervacuis rebus noli scrutari multipliciter;
25 A stubborn man will fare badly in the end, and he who loves danger will perish in it.25 plurima enim super sensum hominum ostensa sunt tibi.
26 A stubborn man will be burdened with sorrow; a sinner will heap sin upon sin.26 Multos quoque supplantavit suspicio illorum,
et species vana decepit sensus illorum.
Sine pupilla deerit lux,
sine scientia deerit sapientia.
27 For the affliction of the proud man there is no cure; he is the offshoot of an evil plant.27 Cor durum male habebit in novissimo;
et, qui amat periculum, in illo peribit.
28 The mind of a sage appreciates proverbs, and an attentive ear is the wise man's joy.28 Cor ingrediens duas vias non habebit successus,
et pravus corde in illis scandalizabitur.
29 Water quenches a flaming fire, and alms atone for sins.29 Cor nequam gravabitur doloribus,
et peccator adiciet peccatum ad peccatum.
30 He who does a kindness is remembered afterward; when he falls, he finds a support.30 Plagis superborum non erit sanitas,
frutex enim peccati radicabitur in illis et non intellegetur.
31 Cor sapientis intelleget verba sapientium,
et auris audiens concupiscet sapientiam.
32 Sapiens cor et intellegibile abstinebit se a peccatis
et in operibus iustitiae successus habebit.
33 Ignem ardentem exstinguit aqua,
sic eleemosyna expiat peccata.
34 Deus prospector est eius, qui reddit gratiam;
meminit eius in posterum,
et in tempore casus sui inveniet firmamentum.
