1 Children, pay heed to a father's right; do so that you may live.	1 Figli, ascoltate me, vostro padre, e agite in modo da essere salvati.
2 For the LORD sets a father in honor over his children; a mother's authority he confirms over her sons.	2 Il Signore infatti ha glorificato il padre al di sopra dei figli e ha stabilito il diritto della madre sulla prole.
3 He who honors his father atones for sins;	3 Chi onora il padre espia i peccati,
4 he stores up riches who reveres his mother.	4 chi onora sua madre è come chi accumula tesori.
5 He who honors his father is gladdened by children, and when he prays he is heard.	5 Chi onora il padre avrà gioia dai propri figli e sarà esaudito nel giorno della sua preghiera.
6 He who reveres his father will live a long life; he obeys the LORD who brings comfort to his mother.	6 Chi glorifica il padre vivrà a lungo, chi obbedisce al Signore darà consolazione alla madre.
7 He who fears the LORD honors his father, and serves his parents as rulers.	7 Chi teme il Signore, onora il padre e serve come padroni i suoi genitori.
8 In word and deed honor your father that his blessing may come upon you;	8 Con le azioni e con le parole onora tuo padre, perché scenda su di te la sua benedizione,
9 For a father's blessing gives a family firm roots, but a mother's curse uproots the growing plant.	9 poiché la benedizione del padre consolida le case dei figli, la maledizione della madre ne scalza le fondamenta.
10 Glory not in your father's shame, for his shame is no glory to you!	10 Non vantarti del disonore di tuo padre, perché il disonore del padre non è gloria per te;
11 His father's honor is a man's glory; disgrace for her children, a mother's shame.	11 la gloria di un uomo dipende dall’onore di suo padre, vergogna per i figli è una madre nel disonore.
12 My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives.	12 Figlio, soccorri tuo padre nella vecchiaia, non contristarlo durante la sua vita.
13 Even if his mind fail, be considerate with him; revile him not in the fullness of your strength.	13 Sii indulgente, anche se perde il senno, e non disprezzarlo, mentre tu sei nel pieno vigore.
14 For kindness to a father will not be forgotten, it will serve as a sin offering--it will take lasting root.	14 L’opera buona verso il padre non sarà dimenticata, otterrà il perdono dei peccati, rinnoverà la tua casa.
15 In time of tribulation it will be recalled to your advantage, like warmth upon frost it will melt away your sins.	15 Nel giorno della tua tribolazione Dio si ricorderà di te, come brina al calore si scioglieranno i tuoi peccati.
16 A blasphemer is he who despises his father; accursed of his Creator, he who angers his mother.	16 Chi abbandona il padre è come un bestemmiatore, chi insulta sua madre è maledetto dal Signore.
17 My son, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.	17 Figlio, compi le tue opere con mitezza, e sarai amato più di un uomo generoso.
18 Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God.	18 Quanto più sei grande, tanto più fatti umile, e troverai grazia davanti al Signore.
19 For great is the power of God; by the humble he is glorified.	19 Molti sono gli uomini orgogliosi e superbi, ma ai miti Dio rivela i suoi segreti.
20 What is too sublime for you, seek not, into things beyond your strength search not.	20 Perché grande è la potenza del Signore, e dagli umili egli è glorificato.
21 What is committed to you, attend to; for what is hidden is not your concern.	21 Non cercare cose troppo difficili per te e non scrutare cose troppo grandi per te.
22 With what is too much for you meddle not, when shown things beyond human understanding.	22 Le cose che ti sono comandate, queste considera: non hai bisogno di quelle nascoste.
23 Their own opinion has misled many, and false reasoning unbalanced their judgment.	23 Non affaticarti in opere superflue, ti è stato mostrato infatti più di quanto possa comprendere la mente umana.
24 Where the pupil of the eye is missing, there is no light, and where there is no knowledge, there is no wisdom.	24 La presunzione ha fatto smarrire molti e le cattive illusioni hanno fuorviato i loro pensieri.
25 A stubborn man will fare badly in the end, and he who loves danger will perish in it.	25 Se non hai le pupille, tu manchi di luce; se ti manca la scienza, non dare consigli.
26 A stubborn man will be burdened with sorrow; a sinner will heap sin upon sin.	26 Un cuore ostinato alla fine cadrà nel male, chi ama il pericolo in esso si perderà.
27 For the affliction of the proud man there is no cure; he is the offshoot of an evil plant.	27 Un cuore ostinato sarà oppresso da affanni, il peccatore aggiungerà peccato a peccato.
28 The mind of a sage appreciates proverbs, and an attentive ear is the wise man's joy.	28 Per la misera condizione del superbo non c’è rimedio, perché in lui è radicata la pianta del male.
29 Water quenches a flaming fire, and alms atone for sins.	29 Il cuore sapiente medita le parabole, un orecchio attento è quanto desidera il saggio.
30 He who does a kindness is remembered afterward; when he falls, he finds a support.	30 L’acqua spegne il fuoco che divampa, l’elemosina espia i peccati.
	31 Chi ricambia il bene provvede all’avvenire, al tempo della caduta troverà sostegno.
